Circle Game video

Does anyone know of a video version of Joni Mitchell singing Circle Game? I have an audio of her and James Taylor doing it on a (I think) Canadian TV show from a long time ago ("All Star Tribute to Joni Mitchell" ???).

I'm going to try an play it at my daughters wedding and I'd like to see her do it. I've got some tabs for it and I'm getting some help from a pro but I'd still like to see Joni's hands go through the progressions to see if I can pick up any nuances, particularly her right hand.

There were several wonderful Joni Mitchell videos up on You Tube about a week ago, which were down again a day later. I fear that may have run into copyright problems. Apparently there is an excellent tape of a BBC gig in the early seventies. That would be worth tracking down. The cut I saw, "Cactus Tree", was excellent.

They are back up, for now. Here's the one of the Circle Game. Better hurry!

Doesn't Joni Mitchell play a right-handed guitar left-handed, thus, upside down? Can someone who doesn't also do this learn anything from watching JM play?

The video Kat posted is NOT Joni and, while nicely enough done, not especially remarkable. Standard tuning, straight-ahead simple key-of-G chords, fairly basic pattern-fingerpicking.

Not bad at all ~ very nice vocal ~ but certainly not likely to help someone who'd "still like to see Joni's hands go through the progressions to see if I can pick up any nuances, particularly her right hand."

If Joni plays Libba-Cotten-style (upside down and backwards), I was never aware of it. I always assumed that the only reason I could never figure out just what she was donig was her penchant for multiple exotic alternative tunings.

Maybe YouTube had the real Joni on display when Kat posted the link, and responded to copyright complaints by substituting another video of the same song performed by someone less famous and less, um, nuanced.

Thanks Kat but I'm really after a rendition by Joni. The one in that You Tube is in regular tuning and Joni plays hers in open G.

She's done several variations - the live version on Miles of Aisles has some different riffs than the original, as does the live TV one with James Taylor that I mentioned earlier.

There's another/better You Tube one by a guy (Nycity72) at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Y7RQiPBUqU, which is more helpful, but even though it's in open tuning and has some interesting sequences, the parts I'm interested in seeing are still different from the way Joni plays them.

I have a good bit of the song down but it's still duller than I'd like it to be so I want to see how she does certain parts. I know it's not going to sound like the studio recording, and I've even changed a couple of things already, but I'd like to at least see what she does.

My teacher told me he thought there was a video out there - maybe even for that TV performance with James Taylor. What I'd really like is an instructional video rather than a performance video so I can focus on her hands but I know that's not possible, so whatver motion visuals I can get of hers will suffice.

P.S. Joni plays right handed in all the stuff I've ever seen about her, so unless it's all been reversed...

Whoops, sorry about that. I got too excited.:-) I had noticed a better rendition with some guy but didn't think it would be helpful.

alanabit:

Can you provide any more info about the 70's BBC show? I did searches on the BBC web site and nothing stuck out. There are 80+ screens of Joni Mitchell references and many are for other atrists that do her songs. I'll probably go through all of the links if that's what I have to do but thought I'd ask if you could think of something I could do to narrow it down some.

I also wanted to email them but got to a page that said they encourage people to do on-line searches because they get thousands of emails and it's too costly to respond to each one.

I originally posted this as a guest (BK) - but this looked like too much of a fun site to visit as a guest so I'm now regietered as Nova.

Still looking for either that BBC reference or maybe the TV All Star Tribute to Joni so any further suggestions are welcome. Thanks !!!

Here's Joni doing "Both Sides Now" and "Circle Game" in 1968 on CBC television show "The Way It Is". Gee, she looks young. Even then, she had that powerful, beautiful voice.

Here are the lyrics we have in the Digital Tradition. Any corrections?

CIRCLE GAME
(Joni Mitchell)

Yesterday a child came out to wonder
Caught a dragonfly inside a jar.
Fearful when the sky was full of thunder
And tearful at the falling of a star.

Then the child grew ten times 'round the seasons
Skated over ten clear, frozen streams
Words like "when you're older" must appease him.
And promises of someday make his dreams.

And the seasons, they go 'round and 'round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time.
We can't return, we can only look
Behind from where we came.
And go 'round and 'round and 'round in the circle game
Sixteen Springs and sixteen Summers gone now
Cartwheels lost to cartwheels through the town
And they tell him, "Take your time, it won't be long now
Till you drag you heels to slow the circles down.

So the boy who dreamed tomorrow now is 20.
Though his dreams have lost some grandeur coming true.
There'll be new dreams, maybe better dreams and plenty.
Before the last revolving year is through.

CHORUS

Well, yes, thanks for asking. I DO have a few corrections (using the recording from Ladies of the Canyon as reference):

CIRCLE GAME

Caught a dragonfly inside a jar.
Fearful when the sky was full of thunder
And tearful at the falling of a star.
    CHORUS
And the seasons, they go 'round and 'round
And the painted ponies go up and down

And go 'round and 'round and 'round in the circle game

Cartwheels turn to car wheels through the town
And they tell him, "Take your time, it won't be long now

I can't find a version in which she does NOT sing "we're captive on the carousel of time.
But one version has the verse about "the boy who dreamt" (although that one leaves out a bunch)

I'm off and on about "a/the carousel of time," Jeri. I think she sings "a" on some verses and "the" on others. I'll bow to your better ears - I changed my transcription.

This is a quibble, but I haven't heard "a" at all, ever. (Except for sometimes when people sing along with a recording (some of whom are me)).
