Everyone has favorite song lyrics. Is there a particular lyric you wish you had written?

such as:

"life is a rainstorm, but love is the ark" (David Mallett)

What happened anyway ~ some offensive lyrics get posted? Rugby songs maybe?

It looks to me lkike only lyrics about the moon wsere deemed acceptable. Oh well, at least none of them rhyme with "June."

If I am forsaken, I'll not be forsworn,
And he's surely mistaken if he thinks that I'll mourn.
I'll get myself up in some right high degree
And pass as light by him as he can by me.

"Der Geist der Liebe erfuellt den Kosmos, und der das All zusammenhaelt kennt jeden Laut. Der Geist steht auf und seine Feine zerstieben, und die ihn hassen fliehen vor seinem Angesicht. Sende aus Deinen Geist und Leben entsteht; und also komm, Geist, und erfuelle die herzen Deiner Menschen, und entzuende in jedem das Feuer Deines ewigen Lebens." (Tangerine Dream, "Alpha Centauri", ?author.)
They just don't write 'em like that any more.

Wish I'd written:
"I'm satisfied, satisfied, I got my boodle-am shaker sittin' by my side" (You May Leave, Memphis Jug Band, 1930)

I've always admired Jackson Browne's "Before the Deluge". The song is about the difficulties of trying to opt out of main-stream society and live a "back to the garden" hippy, counter-culture life style. Many have tried but often their resolve weakens, and Jackson captures this with the lines, "In the ended they traded their tired wings for the resignation that living brings, exchanged love's bright and fragile glow for the glitter and the rouge".

I could come up with quite a list; but try these from
Guy Clark's "Dublin Blues":

I loved you from the git go
I'll love you till I die
I loved you on the Spanish steps
The day you said goodbye

I have seen the David; I've seen the Mona Lisa, too;
And I have heard Doc Watson play Columbus Stockade Blues.

Graham Miles, probably one of the finest songwriters ever - writing about "The Young Engineer" - who serves his apprenticeship working on the building of the Forth Road Bridge - surrounded by people from all over Great Britain.

"As the men from the South and the men from the North,
Will meet and complete the bridge over the Forth".

"On Raglan Road on an August day
I saw her first and knew
that her dark hair might weave a snare
that I might one day rue
I saw the danger yet I walked
along the enchanted way
and I said let grief be a fallen leaf
at the dawning of the day"

How much more evocative, sublime and expressive do you want?!

"Oh, you should have seen the punch up when I brought my bleedin' lunch up" (Brian Damage - Torresmolinos)

And her boots are like you'd figure, and her car is full of hay,
Horses, humans, if she had to rank it,
You'd bet on them that canter and them that need fly spray" (Jonathan Richman - Since She Started To Ride)

By the way, to make sense, the subject of this thread should be "Songs you wish you'd written". Watch those subjunctives!

Yours pedantically,

From: John MacKenzie

Yup Melodeon Boy, the title's been bugging me from the get go too!

Some of my favourite lyrics are contained in this song, I particularly like the image of the telegraph cables singing down the highway.

Pennies in a stream
Falling leaves, a sycamore
Moonlight in Vermont

Icy finger-waves
Ski trails on a mountainside
Snowlight in Vermont

Telegraph cables, they sing down the highway
And travel each bend in the road
People who meet in this romantic setting
Are so hypnotized by the lovely...

Ev'ning summer breeze
Warbling of a meadowlark
Moonlight in Vermont

Telegraph cables, how they sing down the highway
And they travel each bend in the road
People who meet in this romantic setting
Are so hypnotized by the lovely...

Ev'ning summer breeze
The warbling of a meadowlark
Moonlight in Vermont

Moonlight in Vermont
Moonlight in Vermont

I Wish I Were In Love Again

Lyrics by: Lorenz Hart
Music by: Richard Rodgers
From the Show: Babes In Arms 1937 (S)

The sleepless nights - the daily fights
The quick toboggan - when you reach the heights
I miss the kisses - and I miss the bites
I wish I were in love again

The broken dates - the endless waits
The lovely loving - and the hateful hates
The conversation - with the flying plates
I wish I were in love again

No more pain - no more strain
Now I'm sane - but I would rather be punched - drunk

The pulled out fur - of cat and cur
The fine mismating - of a him and her
I've learned my lesson - but I wish I were
In love again

The furtive sigh - the blackened eye
The words: "I love you - 'til the day I day"
The self deception - that believes the lie
I wish I were in love again

When love congeals - it soon reveals
The faint aroma - of performing seals
The double-crossing - of a pair of heals
I wish I were in love again

No, no more care - no, no despair
Now I'm all there - but I'd rather be punch drunk

Believe me sir - I much prefer
The classic battle - of a him and her
I don't like quiet - and I wish I were
In love again - in love again - in love again

They don't write them like that anymore ¦¬]
G.

And then leaning on your windowsill
one day he'll say you caused his will
to weaken with your love and warmth and shelter.
And then taking from his pocket an old schedule of trains
he'll say I told you when I came I was a stranger.
