DREDGIN' IS MY DRUDGERY
(Tom Wisner)

When the summer sun she's restin', crabs are settlin' down
When leaves are turnin' rusty and the marshes burnt to brown
I long to feel the timbers of a vessel brought to life
By restless winds and hardy men who join me in my plight

Chorus:
'Cos dredgin' she's my drudgery, sailin' she's my pride
I bend my back to labour and ride out on the tide
That's been my joy since I'se a boy

Well, I plough a sea on Monday and push on Tuesday too
Wednesday she's a sailin' day and I start missin' you
On Thursday I get weary as we lick across that rock
Start to pray for Friday when we put her to the dock

Chorus

Come March I'm feelin' weary and I long to go ashore
While my knees are growin' heels and toes, my back is bent and sore
I've pulled two thousand bushels and I'm rusted to the bone
Why the wind and waters whistle where my muscles used to roam

Chorus

Tom Wisner is one of the recognized leaders in protecting the Cheasepeak Bay estuary, and a fine singer and songsmith. His son Mark has composed some fine songs as well.

"Dredgin'" is of course a reference to how oysters are traditionally harvested in the Bay.

Cheerily,
