Terry Whelan - concert and singaround

Subject: Terry Whelan - concert and singaround
From: Barb'ry

Many of you will know that Terry Whelan, stalwart of the North West folk scene and fine singer of traditional songs, died in October last year.
To celebrate his memory and contribution to folk music, there will be a mini concert and singaround taking place during the Four Fools Folk Festival - at 6.30pm on Saturday 30th June.
The festival has many of Terry's friends as guests and many have agreed (or will agree...) to do a mini spot in the concert (Steve Turner, Ellen Mitchell, Alison and Geordie and hopefully some of the other guests) and this will be followed by a singaround of traditional songs.
Tickets will be available on the door, price £5 (or come to the whole festival!)
Please come along as a listener, singer or to tell a story about Terry.
this is the link to the festival site for directions etc:

I will attempt to create a blue clicky to a recording of him singing as soon as I have reconfigured my PC (new hard disk).

The concert and singaround will be worth the weekend ticket price alone :0) At £5 a bargain.

Guests for the concert so far will include Geordie McIntyre and Alison McMorland, Ellen Mitchell, Steve Turner, hopefully, if I can get hold of him, Brian Peters (are you there Brian?!) and Sid Calderbank plus others.
Please try to come and bring your voices and memories!

I hope Steve Turner can be persuaded to sing "The Flowers of Manchester"!

"(are you there Brian?!)"

Barb'ry - I will not actually be at Four Fools on the Saturday evening owing to a prior committment that Angie (I think!) knows all about. Unfortunately I will be away by 6.30. Sorry!

Sorry to hear that, Brian, but looking forward to hearing how the Child Ballad project is going.

Is this the same Terry Whelan who played in the Two Tones with Gordon Lightfoot and who lived in Toronto in the mid sixties?

no, Jim. This is the Terry Whelan from Manchester - born and bred! Sang traditional British songs in the main.

I will be thinking of you all - I am not able to get there due to prior booking.
Sing a long ballad for me - preferably Child Owlet with the scream at the end!

Mary- I'm sure a few of us will do as you ask- but it would be a brave person who tried to do Child Owlet like Terry! :0)

I wish I could be there. I only met Terry a coupla times when a friend took me to "the Anglers" for one of the sing ins, he was both kind and encouraging and an alround nice guy (I think I have some pix in the archive of that evening) I was and am saddened by his passing

Just got back - wanted to record my personal thanks to Barb'ry and those in charge for a superb occasion.
Shame the singaround started so late and got chopped down to less than two hours, but the concert itself (featuring Donal Maguire, Ellen Mitchell, Ken Hall, Peta Webb, Steve Turner, Geordie McIntyre and Alison MacMorland) was exceptional. There was an abundance of absolutely superb singing - and songs - and also plenty of memorable "laugh or cry same price" reminiscences and stories.
The whole event was very touching, a fine and fitting memorial and a powerful testament to the way in which Terry touched so many lives.

Yes, thanks to Barbara for organising this event. Thanks to all the singers at the singaround - I think everyone got a turn, but if not, sorry!

And thanks too to the wonderful concert line-up - your singing was truly, truly magnificent - Terry would have been delighted!

Thanx Barb'ry for oraganising it.

Just come across the sad news of Terry's death. What a fine singer. I learnt several songs and singing techniques from him in the late 50's when he and Harry ran the Wagon & Horses club and later at the Clarendon.
Still singing the songs.........

I have some recordings of Manchester folk singing in the 60's . Any interest?

Also has anyone got a contact with Gavin Whelan, Terry's son ?

The Paul Graney Trust might be interested in them (John Adams is a contact) although I think they've got more than enough tapes to deal with from Paul's collection. Or Mark Dowding might be interested. If you can get them digitised, then I would suggest donating copies to the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library and Manchester record Office.

Hi Colin - Can you give us an idea of what format the recordings are on please? Reel-to-Reel or cassette? and do you have any idea of who is singing on them, name of clubs, dates, etc?
I'd be really interested in recordings of Harry Boardman but it would be great to see if they could be made available in a digital format. I've got a load of cassettes from the early 80s of recordings at the Unicorn (Harry's club) and the Star Inn at Salford (Martin Gittins' club)
Cheers

Thanks Derek.

Hi Colin,

Same questions as Mark.

I'm interested to know about them. Are they from a club? If so, which club?

Are they cassette or reel to reel? I have a transcription bay equipped to deal with most format variations (including the slowest speed quarter inch quarter track).

I'm aware of a set of recordings from the Middleton Folk Club which I offered to digitise a while back but the holder didn't get back to me.

As Derek says, I've got the original digitised files of the Paul Graney Collection which has includes of club recordings from places like Harry Boardman's club, and the one in Glossop and......... (the meta data is not very extensive but the digitisation is all done).

Contact me if I can be of any assistance.

I'm friends with Vicki Whelan on Face-ache and one of her friends is Gavan Whelan so you could maybe get to him via that route. If you're not on Face-ache I could message her for you.

Hi guys thanks for the responses
I have about a dozen reel to reel tapes of various folk clubs in and around Manchester from 1964 ish. They were recorded on a four track machine but not by me. I seem to recall an old bloke with a pipe, nursing a whisky, in the club and I think he made the recordings, of which mine are probably copies. War on Want concert is one, Spinners at FSNW is another. All interspersed with copies of tapes of traditional singers from when I spent some time down at Peg Seeger and Ewan McColls place, Topic records etc.
I could make .wav files of them if anyone thinks they might be interesting - again I must emphasise, the original recordings were not made by me, so they are probably well circulated anyway.
Terry borrowed the recorder one day and he recorded some talking and general family stuff which is on one of the tapes - lots of kids talk including Gavan.
Cheers

Colin

Guest Colin wrote "old bloke with a pipe, nursing a whisky, in the club and I think he made the recordings"
That sounds suspiciously like Paul Graney to me .... so they may be copies of tapes that the Paul Graney Trust may or may not already have...
