The English once kneu how to spell- 1205: "And gingiuere & licoriz he hom lefliche (backward z)ef." Holland, 1602 spelled it licorice. Some guy in 1542 stuck a q in it. Fifteen or so spellings are listed in the OED that were used in the past. Or use the scientific name, Glycyrrhiza glabra. Chervil may be used as a substitute in cooking. |
