Thugamar fein an samhradh linn

Would anyone be able to direct me to a sung version of Thugamar Fein an Samhradh Linn online? (Not a midi - I can never hear the tune in a midi - think it's because they even out the rhythm).

The reason: it suddenly struck me when I heard the tune on the radio, it being May and this being the quintessentially May tune, that Liliberlero is not just a parody of Irish Catholic 18th-century politics, but also of the joyful song that was then central to Irish Catholic culture.

(Not because it's religious - it's not in the least, it's a song about booleying and the joys of summer, which in fact was sung to greet the English Queen Elizabeth when she visited.)

Of course the song was long since gone when this enticing theory occurred to me, and so I couldn't listen again to see if the similarity was really there.

There are several songs that use that line as a refrain - with several different tunes. The one you're thinking off DOES have a similar (jig) rhythm to Lilibulero and the tunes are not a million miles apart.

- which is not to say that your thesis is right!

Regards

for anyone who wants to see lyrics and discussion, there is another thread

why not get a recording of La Lugh (Eithne Ní Uallacháin) or Pádraigín Ní Uallacháin singing this song?
(also recorded by na Casadaigh and on the tape accompanying the Ceolta Gael books, I think)

Guest - my copy of Lá Lugh doesn't have Thugamar Féin on it. There's a tape with the Ceolta Gael books? Can't find it by Na Casadaigh.

By the way, the one I'm thinking of has the joyous chorus "Samhradh! Samhradh! Bainne na gamhna! Thugamar fhéin an samhradh linn".

Hah, I'd just found that, and it *is* like Liliberlero. Also found
this, which appears to be Red Hugh O'Neill miraculously transferred from the 16th century to sing Casadh an tSúgáin. But no version that has the hopping-and-skipping sense of joyful youngsters that Thugamar Féin should have.

Apparently it's on 1691, but either I've cleared that out in a reckless moment or it's hiding somewhere with most of my other CDs, which I've also mislaid.

There seems to be different versions of Senex Puer about, this track list is from Gerry O'Connor's
website. 'Belataine Song' is a version of, or has verses in common with, Thugamar fein an samhradh linn.
Seán Ó Sé also sings 'Thugamar fein' on Ceol na nUasal.

Senex Puer

1. Brighid's Kiss 2. Omeath Music 3. Senex Puer 4. Eirigh suas a stoirin 5. Donal Dubh

6. The Mummers' March Highland and Reels 7. Lough Erne Shore 8. A Bruxa 9. Ta Se 'na La

10. Belataine Song 11. The Donnellan Set 12. The Rose in the Garden 13. Mal Bhan Ni Chuilleannain

Annoyingly, Amazon has taken to providing soundbites of only *selected* tracks instead of a bite of each one, and the selection never seems to include Thugamar Féin.

JTT I've just thought of this - and checked it out - if you get on to http://www.wfuv.org/ and find
the 'Mile Failte' playlists, there are four versions of Thugamar Fein from various years. Decide
which one you want and then go to the appropriate WFUV sound archive...

The sound archives seem to have been nuked, DK.

The site used to be dead simple to navigate and then they 'improved/updated' it.
