Morris & Garland at UK Summer fests

Hello - I am newish to this forum. I was hoping someone might be able to suggest some summer/fall festivals in the UK where we could see some Morris and Garland dancing. Also, if anyone knows of any places in the UK offering summer workshops, camps ....classes etc. that would offer classes/intructions of this type of traditional dance.
Really interested in garland! I am part of a group in the US that is trying to start up a group of Garland Dancers. Any leads/info. would be great.

Thanks for the help.
Rose

Most of the UK festivals have what your looking for. Suggest Broadstairs Folk Week August 10th - 17th they have loads of displays & workshops
Happy Dancing

Rose ....

If you could let us know the dates that you will be in the UK and the areas you will be visiting, we can be more specific about what may be happening.

Unlike the US ... during the summer there are festivals and other activities every weekend and somtimes (as with Whitby and Sidmouth) a festival can last for a whole week.

Bith Beverley and Shrewsbury have a good range of garland and morris.

What's wrong with Clog and Rapper?

If you can, try to catch some of the teams from the area that the dancing originates from - Cheshire, Lancashire, Yorkshire. No disrespect at all to the teams who perform this dancing in other parts of the country, but there is something particularly special about seeing a tradition performed in the area it is from.

Surely the trick is to find a festival without any Morris dancing.

Hello - Thank you for the tips and info. Great stuff! I have no set date yet of my time in the UK. Most likely it would be late July/August. Whitby was strongly suggested by several dancers in the UK. I am also (YES) - very interested in clogging for sure.....and would love to check out rapper!! Would anyone one know of any music/dance camp like situations or summer schools (even through to the Fall)...that would offer intense workshops in this type of dance????? Dance weeks???

Yes...go to Whitby. You may not get a garlend workshop but there is plenty of morris to see and lots of workshops. Its a fabulous place too, the festival is a week long.

Whitby would be my no 1 recommendation. But be aware that accomadation at Whitby is at a premium. B&Bs, Hotels & self catering get well booked up ahead of time. Camping at the main festival site is for season ticket holders only (there is another temp campsite set up by Moor & Coast see This Thread, but this is filling up fast). As for Whitby week itself (Whitby Folk Week )if you want to see a lot of the booked artists then a season ticket is good value, if you just want to go to a few workshops & watch the dancing & "fringe" in the pubs, then you are probably better not getting a season ticket. Me i'm a season ticket man, I like to do a bit of everything.
Also there are many morris sides around the country who have dance out evenings & weekends of dance where you may see several sides dancing together. Most teams have websites which will detail dates etc. Most can be found here Morris Dancing.
Hope this is helpful.
Cheers
Les

If you're looking for garland dancers though I would recommend Googling for "Open Morris" and the "Morris Federation".
