John Kirkpatrick was on Radio 4 today, Making History (scroll down) - talking about the non-use of concertinas on pirate ships, Captain Pugwash sig tune notwithstanding.

It'll be available on Listen Again in a while (when I last looked last week's programme was still up). His contribution is about 20 minutes in.

Pugwash theme for the TV show was played on Accordion, not concertina.

Anahata, they did point that out during the discussion.

Yes... and whatever the actual instrument used to play the soundtrack, Tom the Cabin Boy holds up a concertina and calls it such - as evidenced at 2:19 in episode "Monster Ahoy" at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRMpSOkZcT8 . John Kirkpatrick did make the distinction but I guess I was remiss in not going into all the details in my intial post!

See, what happened was I initially wrote that as an email note to my mate Mark, with whom I had seen John Kirkpatrick at the Old Down in Litton a few weeks ago, as I thought he'd be interested, and in that informal milieu I was no doubt slapdash with the terminology.

And then I thought, maybe some people on Mudcat would be interested, so I largely just cut and pasted my email.

Anahata - we saw Tom Napper and Tom Bliss last night at the Nova Scotia in Bristol and Bliss (Napper had a sore throat and wasn't supposed to talk or sing) said the club should get you and Mary Humphries as guests. So if you get an out-of-the-blue call from them, that's why!

Sorry - I was at work when I posted my earlier remarks about concertina vs. accordion so couldn't actually listen to the show at the time.

As for Bristol - Thanks for the heads-up and thanks Tom if you're reading this! (We've seen quite a bit of each other recently as we were all at Chippenham Festival, including jointly running one of the song workshops )
