10 Jun 07 - 04:42 PM (#2073105) Subject: RE: Folklore: Les Barker in concert in Toledo, Oregon From: Herga Kitty It was on one April morning (when I was running late for work because I'd belatedly realised that my mobile phone battery was flat, and waited a while at home to recharge it), that I unexpectedly met Les Barker on platform 3 at Baker Street station (Metropolitan line). He'd just been to the US Embassy to sort out his visa. He was heading northbound and I was heading south, but he just had time to tell me that they asked him what he was going to do in the States. When he said that he's a poet, they asked "Have you done this sort of thing before....?" American audiences should perhaps be warned that Les has written about the Titanic from the point of view of a polar bear whose family were on the iceberg. The iceberg one was my intro to Les and then I received a CD from Micca about those puir dachshunds and their unfortunate predicament, etc., etc. Have loved Barker's stuff ever since, but the iceberg one always makes me cry! Wish I was closer to Oregon! |
