Tech: XP media player frustration

I am very frustrated by this new media player. Perhaps I am just dumb..but I bought a book on it and The opening screen does not match the one in the book. Are there many versions of media player, or do I just not know how to get to the page with the menu on the right hand side. I seem unable to access the screen that allows me to click media library or playlist. I know I am technically a bit dumb but i cant't seem to figure this out at all. Is there a place I can go on the net for answers. All I want to do is put some Martin Carthy stuff on a playlist. How hard can that be ?
Hope soemone can help.

Where did you find it? Do you mean Windows Media Player?

I almost never use anything Microsoft provides...there are always better choices.

If you want to play audio files only, in a playlist, and are willing to download & install another program...try XMPlayer

There are many others...even the simplest of all 1by1

(I can't even find the media player that came with XP...though I guess it's there somewhere..)

I play most things with Winamp, which is a free download with no catches. About all it doesn't handle is Real Audio files. For them I use a package called Real Alternative which bundles Media Player Classic and will run Quicktime files as well.
Both have been discussed previously on mudcat. Put them in the Forum Search on the main forum page.

The latest Windows Media Player appears to be Mediea Player 11.

There have been frequent updates, and some "media" sites that provide content for the player frequently urge you to update. The latest that I've received a "persuasive" update recommendation for from Microsoft was version 10.

Google shows, for Windows Media Player a number of places where you can get various recent versions, and may show you a FAQ or other site where you can find user help.

A suggestion would be that you visit the Windows Update Site (and visit it regularly if you don't get automatic updates). You may have to select "Custom Install" to see the latest Media Player offering, if it's not a "Critical Update."

In my ver 10, there's a tab a the top labelled "Library" that "hints" (says "create playlists" when you hover the mouse over it) that it may be where you'd want to get into it. The Help button in the version you're using is likely to be more help than your book, although Microsoft is noted for somewhat mediocre "help" functions.

Since there are numerous appearance options, you may need to click the button at the very top left to get out of a "special" mode, and you'll probably want to display the toolbar (View tab) for easier navigation, at least until you've created your own "personalized" setup.

Others likely will be able to give more specific advice, as I don't use anything on the internet that requires paying money, except when I get desparate, so I don't "explore" pay per play and other options pushed by media programs much.

Thank you all, I will take this advice and see how it goes. I also do want to download stuff or buy any additional things, I just like to listen to music while I work. Anyway, I will have another go. Thanks again.

Well, I have been trying for days to get this wee bugger to work. It is media player 11, which I believe is the latest version. When I clag and drag the songs onto the playlist, nothing happens. Sorry to bug people again but what am I doing wrong. Any further advice.

You might try another technique besides dragging...see if copying & pasting the address will work...(will it play music using any technique? Does it show anything? Is your sound turned up & not muted?) There are so many possible scenarios...

Oh...are these songs on your computer, or on the WWW? If you have Windows Media Player going, it sets itself to be the default player for almost everything..(which is why I won't install it)...so just double clicking ought to play a song. Then, for a larger playlist, there MUST be a menu option to open a folder and put some or all of its songs in the playlist. Every player I have used has this option somewhere.

The songs are on a cd, I just want to take some of my favourite songs from my cds and put them on a playlist. But when I attempt to drag them onto the playlist...nothing happens.

Do you rip them to the library first?

If not, you might want to try that, it works for me.

It seems to me that a playlist should be made up of songs that are ON your computer.

But I inserted a CD, then loaded Media Player Classic... (a non-Microsoft program) and opened a directory using its menu and told it to play the 4 middle tracks from the CD, and it is now doing this. (I had never tried this before.)

So...what are you attempting to drag these files from? a file manager?...and why in particular do you resort to dragging instead of just opening a menu?

Well...ok...I just did something I neved did before.....I opened a file manager, found the CD, chose the NEXT 3 tracks, highlighted them, and dragged them to the Media Player. So it is possible....*shrug*.

I have no idea what is happening on your end without a detailed step-by-step description, including what you see when you attempt the dragging. Since I use totally different programs, I can only guess.

(for me...to drag files means opening two programs, and having them side by side on the screen. This feels awkward, as it means resizing my file manager so I can see the media player...is this what you are doing?...
gee, I may learn something yet...I may not LIKE it..*grin*, but I may be smarter.

Just re-read this:

"I just want to take some of my favourite songs from my cds and put them on a playlist."

*IF* you want songs from more than ONE CD on a playlist, they must be copied..('ripped') to your hard drive. You can have only 1 CD in the drive at a time, so you can have only songs from that CD on a temporary playlist.

Bill

What happens if yo have more than one CD drive on your PC/local LAN?

You SHOULD be able to access them all, surely...

I have Windows Media Player 10.

An update to Windows Media Player 11 is offered frequently, but is a 26.x MB download, which on my dial-up connection means my computer is unusable for about 12 hours. Maybe later.

Clicking HELP in Windows Media Player, on the Index tab, I find an introduction to Windows Media Player.

Clicking "Perform Common Tasks" or something like that, takes me to "creating playlists." The apparently critical point there is that only items in your "Library" can be added to a playlist. Only items on your computer, on a network drive, or on the internet can be added to your library.

A subsequent entry, a couple of clicks later to something about adding items to your library, indicates that you can add items from CDs to your library by copying them from the CD onto your machine, and after they are copied they can be added to your library. After they are in your library, they can be entered into a playlist.

There is no indication that I found in my extensive research, encompassing at least 4.3 minutes, that indicates that tracks from a CD can be entered into a playlist without first copying them to a local drive, and adding them as "library" entries, before attempting to enter them into a playlist.

Entries/additions to a "playlist," as defined in the articles found, can be made only from items in the machine's library, and the library can contain only things on your machine, on a network to which you are connected, or at known links on the internet.

For playing a single CD, you may or may not be able to select the order in which tracks will play. That would require additional exhaustive research, but it appears that it comes under a different "task" than creating a playlist.

Thank you all sooo much, now I am starting to understand what I am meant to do. I thought I could simply insert the cd, bring up the song list and then drag selected songs onto the playlist. Apparently, I cannot do that, I must "rip" them first..yes ? Anyway, it makes sense in a way. Thanks again I will try that method. I am so dumb about these things, so I am grateful for the help.

My advice is uninstall it and reinstall Windows Media Player 10, but there are sites out there which show workarounds to make version 11 work like 10! Google is your best friend.

Well, yes, I guess so....but as I noted, this would be only a temporary playlist, good for only that session....(which might be fine for some purposes, but seems a little awkward.)

John has laid it all out pretty clearly, including how Windows Media Player works...which is a bit different from some of them.
