sausage and mushroom for me, though I like several kinds well enough.
I tried anchovy pizza once years ago. Why would anyone eat that? It just tasted like eating salt by the spoonful.

A now defunct local pizzeria had a Cajun pizza that was incredible. The standard toppings were crawfish, shrimp, oysters, boudin sausage and andouille sausage. For a bit extra you could get alligator tail and frog legs.

A local restaurant here (Michigan) had chunks of 'gator tail for appetizers for awhile. As they served them, they weren't bad apart from being as chewy as shoe leather, sopping with grease, and totally flavorless. Once was enough for me.

I never met a pizzaria pizza I didn't like - there's no such thing.
Now, you may discuss what toppings you like best, and in what combinations, but pizza itself - no such thing as a bad pizzaria pizza so it really doesn't matter what their laying on it, s'all good, even in Texas. Cheers.

I was talking with my wife just today, recounting the most memorable meals I have had in my life. I remarked that a number of those memories were pizza. One was Mrs. Infusino's home-made pizza, with cracker-thin crust, that I had one day while in grade school in Racine, Wisconsin. Another was the rectangular pizza we got near in the Italian part of town near Jones Island in Milwaukee, while I was in college. And the most memorable was pizza I got in two different places in Rome - one was half a block from the side entrance of the Vatican. Soft, thick crust, very light cheeses and not much sauce, and a wonderful variety of toppings.

Best pizza I ever had was in Rome too. It was wafer thin with not much sauce, mozzerella, garlic and olive oil and basil. I was with my best mate and we were drinking a glass of valpolacelli(can't spell that - but hey this is not a spelling site!)
The sun was shining and all was well with the world.

An odd sounding pizza has become popular here in North Texas - cheeseburger. It has ground beef, cheddar cheese, onions, tomatoes and yes - pickles. It tastes a lot better than it sounds.

I'm prejudiced and narrow-minded because the first pizza I ever had was at the *original* Pizza Hut....Wichita, Kans., about 1958. It was a simple sausage. Since then, I have added Pepperoni to my options, and will tolerate a few other things like pineapple,,,though I don't see why anyone bothers....but since I don't care for onions or anchovies or olives, I guess my choices would bore some of you.

I knew a guy who would walk into one of the EARLY Pizza Huts...(maybe #3) and order "garbage can"...meaning, "put everything you have on it." I got my own and didn't sit too close to him.

Two twelves with the works for pickup at Vito's. Especially if Joey or Dino are on the pies.

As for Pizza Hut, sorry Sorcha and anyone else, but, the pizza I had at the Pizza Hut here tasted like "Oh, that's not food. There's something in it that humans are not supposed to eat." Seriously, that's the only way I can describe it. Must be me, because they sell a lot of pies.

As for the best I've ever had (I've only had pizza from Boston to Goose Bay along the Eastern Seaboard of NA) was at Pizza Experts in St. John's, NF. Some shockin' good me zon.... go figure!

My favorite pizza is from a little independent pizzaria called Formaggio. Thin, crisp, slightly buttery tasting crust, not too much sauce. I don't like alot of unusual things going on with my pizza though. Pepperoni, black olives, green peppers, that's about it.

I had Pizza Hut pizza a couple of times, and stopped because the sausage looked suspiciously like rabbit droppings. Then I became a stockholder in Yum, the company that owns Pizza Hut, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and Taco Bell. I figured I'd better try Pizza Hut again, and I was pleasantly surprised. Now it's one of the better chain-restaurant pizzas.

There's no justice, gnu!

Well, I am sorry to say that I don't consider pizza to be real food. I eat it as seldom as possible. Ironically enough, the last two friends I visited both served up pizza, so I was gracious, and I ate it. It's not totally unpalatable, but it's not what I would generally choose to put in my digestive tract.

Subject: RE: BS: What Pizza You Like?

LOL, Joe....pssst...it still does look kinda like rabbit droppings. Yea, I cook there, but IMO, the sauce is just too overpowering. Too much oregano or something. If you order it light/EZ sauce, it's better.

Wes, we put bacon crumbles on our cheeseburger. And yes, it's better than it sounds. What I find weird is the Hawaiian one...ham, pork green pepper, onion (OK so far....) then pineapple, (well, ok too....) but the last straw is maraschino cherries. I do wonder sometimes why they don't add coconut?????

I'm a classicist/traditionalist ~ the fewer toppings the better. Having grown up in north-central New Jersey, I prefer the New-York thin crust style, and love to be able to buy a single slice, plain cheese or maybe pepperoni.

In order to compromise with a group, I'm willing to go with two or three toppings at most. I like green pepper, one meat selection, and maybe mushrooms or onions. Once in a while, for a change of pace, I'll enjoy a "Hawaiian" pizza: ham, pineapple, and green pepper. (The "ham" is usually, technically, Canadian bacon; if they let you, try substituting pepperoni.)

But I HATE "with everything" ~ it always comes out all soggy and barely recognizable as pizza!

As a meat selection, sausage is OK, but unpredictable; there are as many different varities of sausage as there are pizzarias. Pepperoni is a safer bet, almost always exactly what you expect.

For many years, dating back through my childhood and teen years, my very favorite pizza was the big 24-inch pie sold on the boardwalk in Seaside Heights, NJ, right next to the Seaside Park city line. Plain cheese, please ~ why gild the lily? ~ with plenty of that nice coarse cornmeal on the crisp bottom crust. It's probably the sea air that made it taste so extra-good, but the sauce chef deserves plenty of credit, too.

More recently, during my winter of exile in New Jersey ('05-'06) after escaping my flooded New Orleans home, some old friends introduced my family and me to the absolutely finest pizza in the world, at Sciortino's on Broadway in South Amboy, NJ.

They make their own sausage as well as an absolutely sublime red sauce, and when you order a pizza with "The Works," they do NOT load it down with dozens of watery ingredients. At Sciortino's, "The Works" comprises a mere four sparingly-applied items: peppers (green), onions, mushrooms, and the aforementioned homemade sausage. Well, the veggies are sprinkled with a light hand ~ you get plenty of sausage.

Definitely worth a side trip for anyone in the New York / New Jersey area, or visiting there for any length of time. Hell, for anyone with the time and money, it's worth a flight to Newark and the 45-minute rent-a-car drive (each way).

about Pizza Hut and similar 'franchise' operations...when you run any operation that large, it becomes almost impossible to supervise quality control from outlet to outlet. For many years, Pizza Hut was pretty good and pretty much the same, but now you can't be sure....just too much local messing with recipes.

People do have different ideas about TYPE of Pizza...thick, gooey crust or thin dry crust...etc. Either can be quite good, if done well...but either takes care. I still don't like thick ones as much as a good Pizza Hut 'type'.....
There's a family-owned place near me that is pretty good...but they skimp on the meat, and during rush hour, they sometimes skimp on cooking time..*grin*...But they've been there 25 years and are always busy, so they are doing something right.

Since the Cajun pizza I mentioned above is no longer available, I guess my favorite obtainable pizza is one called a Grecian Delight, made by a local Greek-owned pizzeria. They use a white sauce, Feta cheese, Gyros meat (lamb sausage), Greek olives, and serve it with a generous supply of Greek peppers on the side.

The one made at UNO'S Pizzaria in Chicago. I haven't had it in 48 years, but it was the best ever. And they are still there where they were in 1959.

Green peppers, sweetcorn, chinese chicken and mushroom... yum!

Limpit and Manitas always have peperoni (the meat variety) or meat selection - oddly enough, one of those is called 'Alligator'... don't ask why, I don't know! I like to change occasionally. I like Hawaiian - ham and pineapple, but I also like tuna, sweetcorn and black olives.

Anchovies are the invention of the Devil.

I like to go to Pizza hut occasionally, usually as a treat for Limpit so she can eat herself sick on the ice cream factory... but I'm disappointed at their salad range. Bacon bits and croutons are not salad items in my book. And what they do to their peppers under pretence of slicing them is just cruelty to peppers.

I am admittedly a pizza snob. Several years ago, the New York Times declared New Haven CT the pizza capital of the world, stating there are more pizza places per capita than anywhere else. New hHaven has a huge Italian population, and the major pizza places here have been operating continuously since the 1930's. Frank Sinatra declared Sally's (as in Salvatore) his favorite.

Plain pizza in New Haven is a pie with just homemade sauce (and home made dough, of course) with just a little parmasean cheese. Delicious, and low fat, too!. Another great one is dough with a little olive oil, garlic, and herbs - mmmmm. Fresh sliced tomato, mozzerella, and fresh basil and garlic (no sauce) is another favorite. Pepe's shucks clams to order for their house specialty - white clam pizza.

I cannot write anymore, I am drooling on the keyboard.

A new thing here is the 'Aussie Meat Pie Pizza' - a 'normal' pizza base with tomato paste, then a layer of mince and light thick gravy, topped by a slightly flaky pastry like 2nd layer. Looks sorta like a wide flat Aussie meat pie, doesn't taste too bad.

Then for many years, there has been the 'Aussie (Breakfast) Pizza' - bacon and whole egg (looking like normal fried eggs!) (tomato paste and cheese under)...

I don't live on pizza, I do like it occassionally, but would happly live in a Sushi Bar, or Yum Cha place...

We found a lovely pizza restaurant called Napoli in Bocca, on Parramatta Road. The Calzone was to die for!

All pizzas are not created equal though. A well made pizza can have just about any combination of toppings and I will like it. So it is just a matter of finding good pizza places. There's a place called Crust in Annandale which has very nice supreme pizzas, and a woodfired pizza place in Balmain that is very good. The worst pizzas are those frozen ones in the supermarket that you heat up. Ugh!

For me: No fruit. No chicken. No tuna. No ham. No clam. No barbecue sauce. No thin crusts. No crunchy crusts. And for the sake of all that is holy, NO #@&%ING ANCHOVIES!!!

I'm a traditionalist, I suppose; give me tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, mushrooms and green peppers on a crust that won't go limp, and I'm in Hut Heaven. The multi-meat and multi-cheese pizzas add a nice touch, too. "White" pizza with spinach is just okay (hold the broccoli), though the Greek pizza that Bee-dubya-ell mentions sounds better than any "white" I've tried thus far.

Hey, PoppaGator, how far is South Amboy from Long Beach Island, NJ? I'll be heading down there in July and August, so I need to know before I go!

Oh, and I like French bread pizza as well. I know, I said I don't like crunchy crusts, but I don't consider French bread to be a "pizza crust" in the tossed-dough sense. As for tossed-dough texture, I prefer it to be thicker and more bready with a lightly toasted surface, rather than flat-and-limp or waferlike-and-crunchy.
