BS: Non Smokers thread England UK

Subject: BS: Non Smokers thread England UK
From: Rasener

I started this thread for all you non smokers to post all the positive and nice things that you see happen after the ban comes in on July 1st 2007 in England.

What would be especially interesting is if any marked increase in trade at pubs you frequent occur becuase of the ban.

Have you now started to go to the local with your family becuase of the ban etc. Is the publican/owner becoming more accomodating to families etc.

How are publicans dealing with it.

Any funny stories.

Just thought I would re-post this from the 42 days thread.

This was Sunday 24th June 2007

Amazing

Went to the bowling Alley today with family.

They had progressively reduced the areas you can smoke in since February. The only place left was a part of the bar, which was due to be smoke free on July 1st.

However, the smoke and smell was so bad from the smokers, they brought it forward a couple of weeks and banned smoking completely.

The staff were so glad.

Lots of people were there including families with children. It was so pleasant.

I was at a meeting with my co-workers today when the subject of smoking came up. Two in the group are ex-smokers. We were all talking about how rare it is to see people smoking, how great that you don't have to breathe second hand smoke. It has been years that we've had bans here.
Then... I told them about this thread on Mudcat and they were shocked that it has taken this long for England to ban smoking in restaurants and pubs.

Just to say that here in Wales we've had the ban for a few months now and it's absolutely wonderful to be able to go into any pub or restaurant we want. And it's been a shock when in England to realise that's not the case (yet). Roll on the day!

Similar action coming in Oz.

we've had smoking restrictions in various places for decades. Smoking in Govt workplaces was banned in the late 70's, or maybe early 80's, & over the years more places have become smoke free. Clubs & Pubs are the last hangout with smokers moved to small well ventilated areas & from 1st July they will be outside the premises in special Smoking areas.

I'm a Social member of a Bowling Club as our craft groups meets weekly in the Club's restaurant, & we have often arrived at 11am to the smell of stale smoke. Builders have just put a roof over a part of the front path between the Bar & the Greens, & I assume will be adding some type of wall/windows to this shiny new roof, but we'll see when we arrive next Wednesday!

Standing in the Rain
(parody of Sydney Carter's original song of the same title)
George Papavgeris June 2007

(chorus)
Standing in the rain, smoking out the window
Smoking out the window every night and day
There he is again, smoking out the window
Smoking out the window in the same old way

No more smoking out the window
This you may no longer do, sir
Every public place is smoke-free
There is nowhere left for you, sir

No use opening the window
Some are lucky, you are not, sir
We are healthy men and women
And we do not want your cough, sir

No you cannot use the bathroom
No you cannot use the stable
No you are our friend no longer
For you have the smoker's label

No more stinking to high heaven
And our lungs they won't be black, sir
In this house you won't be welcome
For we're glad to see your back, sir

Wishing you a pleasant evening
We will now go back indoors, sir
And be happy that Big Brother
Missed our sins while watching yours, sir

I already do, Nutty - who wants to sing in a smoky club room anyway. No problem for me, and I agree with the ban.

Some of the places I've been to will have to spend serious money to get rid of the smells that have seeped into the fabric of the building, upholstery, carpets, curtains; so you might not notice the difference straight away there, until they do refurbish and repaint. But it'll be worth it.

I remember when I used to smoke in my car, from time when I'd wash the inside of the windshield (windscreen)how greasy black my cleaning cloth would become. Didn't stop me smoking, though.

I smoked for more than 25 years and while I regret the useless waste of money and the risks I took with my lungs, the part that mortifies me is how unthinking I was. I dnn't think it was arrogance, exactly- it's more that it never occurred to me that I couldn't indulge myself. After all, I had the habit... Surely everyone recognized that I couldn't help myself? *G*

We stay at a really nice pub in Cornwall. The landladies reaction to the smoking ban - "at last, we'll be able to decorate!" however on the other side of the coin, the workingmen's club in the next village to our's is still trying to find legal loopholes to allow members to carry on smoking inside the building.

It was easy for me to stop.

As I lay in a hospital bed with an oxygen mask on, the consultant said: "Well, you have a choice, stop smoking or stop breathing". I asked if I could phone a friend and he said "No".

So I stopped.

And spending part of my life in Spain I do notice the difference between the two countries where in Spain - most of the population seem to smoke.

Though of course it is easier to smoke outside.

Sometimes a cigar is just an excuse to go out in the rain and catch bronchitis.

I never smoked but both my parents did until health reasons made them stop. My mother was hospitalised and it was a case of 'you can't get out of bed and you can't smoke in bed. You'll be here for at least 2 weeks, get over it'. She stopped smoking there and then and went cold turkey, which actually helped as the nicotine was masking a whole heap of other symptoms. She was already going CT over drug withdrawal (prescription drugs - 8 pills, 3 times a day, 5 of which were to deal with side effects of the 3 that were supposed to be dealing with her condition) so getting over nicotine was a picnic.

My dad had to be told the 'stop smoking or stop breathing' way. He weaned himself off ciggies and fried foods eventually but it was too late to stop the stomach cancer that killed him.

Having seen (and smelled) my parents smoke endlessly, made me never want to do it - leastways, not once I'd got past 5yrs old and the 'copy what mummy does' stage.

When I decorated the front room at their house, I painted the ceiling white and they couldn't believe the difference. At one point, Dulux produced a paint that was affectionately known as 'nicotine white'. It gave newly decorated pubs that 'smoked in for 50 years' look.

I can see how people would want to be allowed the choice to smoke where they want, but they also have to realise, non smokers must be given the opportunity to sit in a smoke free environment. I for one, can't wait!

Here in Wales, it's been 'No Smoking Indoors' since April. I was playing at a ceilidh in a social club tonight, and I asked the women behind the bar what effect the new rules had had on their trade. They all agreed that, if anything, trade was up now, with more families coming in, and people staying longer. They also all agreed the club was a much nicer place to work in now. They reported no longer waking up with a raging headache after a night (not drinking) in the old smoky club. So, it's been a good thing here. I'm sure it'll be the same in England.

It's here! Woooooooooooooooooo-hoo!

A little story to show the smokers why there has to be a ban. Went to see Martin Simpson and Andy Cutting on Friday night, at a local council venue where smoking is not allowed on the premises (including outside within the boundary walls). A stupid woman came outside at half-time for a coffin-nail, and stood smoking just INSIDE the gate - all the time trying to hide behind other people so that she wouldn't be seen on the CCTV system! What a plonker - she could have taken two steps more, stood OUTSIDE the gate, and smoked herself stupid without anyone turning a hair. If smokers had showed more sense and consideration over the years, there wouldn't be a ban.

IMHO of course.

I stopped for the same reasons as Folkiedave and The PA. About eleven years ago. Two heart attacks in a week certainly made me consider my position on the evil weed. When you're lying in a hospital bed connected to a monitor and tubes going into you all over, it certainly concentrates the mind! Funny isn't it, we have always known about the health risks with smoking, but somehow kid ourselves into thinking that the bad things only happen to other people, not us. WRONG, very wrong! Remember, to the rest of the world, YOU are 'other people'. In addition, whilst being prepared for my angiogram, some many weeks after the initial events, I said to the consultant 'I dont know why we're bothering with this, I feel great now' He said 'How did you feel on the day before your first attack?' 'Great' I replied. 'Exactly' he said!
Finally, at the club I run, which is in a smallish venue, well before this ban the couple of smokers amongst the regulars would always go into the passage for a quick drag if they needed it. Very considerate and they didn't feel that it impinged upon their liberty at all!

Regards
Andy

I suppose all the whingeing from smokers about 'freedom-of-choice' etc. is inevitable. But as I see it this is a blow for freedom for all of us who hate having their 'sensory spaces' invaded! Now how about banning yobs who drive around in summer demonstrating their appalling tastes in music at ear-splitting volume (I think you should be able to toss a tear-gas canister through the open window) and women who drench themselves in sickly perfume and introducing swingeing and rigorously enforced penalties for dropping litter and fly-tipping?

Hi Dave. Yes it is next to Salford station. The only reason I go in there is that it is the cheapest and best pint that is near to where I work so I only go in at lunch with friends from the union usually. It's a good pint of Holts and reasonably upholstered for a Holts pub. I was quite surprised that the smell of cigarettes had left it so soon. I would have thought a century of Woodbines and Park Drive would have lingered a little longer!

I make it to the White Lion very occasionally because I live in Oldham and I'm often busy on Monday nights, but I've always enjoyed it when I have been.

I'm glad of the new restriction in England. Smokers may have the right to poison their own bodies but not pollute the air of others. Smoker's rights extend only to their own management of their addiction but do not have the right to include others in that addiction.

I love to travel but am wary of places where smoking is tolerated and air is polluted. It's welcome news that England and Ireland are going smoke-free in public places and now I can enjoy these countries more than before.

Tourism will be served by the smoking ban. England and Ireland are great countries and have so much to offer people who honor healthy lifestyles.

The Albert Vaults has just closed down. Officialy it is up to let but let's face it, the likelihood is a convenient fire and a pristine site in one of the (unbelievably) up and coming areas of Salford. The Salford Arms is pretty run down nowadays and the Rovers Return wouldn't win a lot of prizes for presentation. The Punch Bowl, the Tallow Tub and the Ship are all sadly history.

The best pub in the area is the Kings Arms down Bloom Street which has a great selection of real ales, a really nice landlord, a good atmosphere and lovely barstaff - and live music and good food on a regular basis as well. And no,I'm not on commission! A bit further down is the Crescent which is a great pub as well.

Our group was it's normal size, but there were more bowlers than usual, dunno whether they were older members who had come out of the woodwork or a visiting team, but they were chatting away happily. A few smokers were on the verandah & I assume they were happy, too.

The air was great, apart from the nasty breeze from the open front door (thieves had broken in the previous day & damaged something) but management turned on the heaters & we were cozy.

In the pub where I work - Hello HuwG - the Landlady came downstairs on Monday sporting a very elaborately embroidered waistcoat. She hadn't been able to wear it to work before now because it would need dry cleaning every day.
A lady was able to nurse her child in the snug, whereas before the ban she would not have been able to; the air in the snug could quite literally turn blue with cigarette smoke.
And not only was there no washing of ashtrays to be done, the students who frequent the pub bough the old ashtrays.
We have had a couple of older gentlemen who have asked for an ashtray, to both of whom I replied "Certainly, that'll be three thousand quid".
Other than that, the only concerns came from a couple who were worried that they would loose their seats when they went outside for a smoke. A couple of "reserved - gone outside for a smoke" signs, took care of that.

Pilgrim
