Hello you Fixers - how was the Chase? Good I hope. See you on the Tuesday (we're on with you at the Edgehill) and elsewhere after that, no doubt. Looking forward to hearing you both again.

And I may see you and Mary too, A. Bunny and me are arriving Monday pm after the organ-organisers session in South Zeal - so the Wheel will be ideal.

A smashing festival - but I cannot make it this year, as I'm moving house around that time, more's the pity!

Hi Tom, and all

Yes we had a great time at Chase Peter gave us your regards.... but no black pudding!!!!

Have you camped at Bideford before? if so what is the camp site like. Will we be trying to pitch the tent in a bowl of soup!

From: alanww

Hi NFA
The campsite is on a hill, having lovely views over the River Torridge. See this View of Campsite . So it should drain well.
Its about a mile from Bideford. So we found it a bit of a long walk as we have a campervan, which we didn't want to move every day. But its ok if you have a car/tent or car/caravan, as you can drive in if one of you is a non- or light-drinker.
Enjoy!

Hi Allan
Thanks for the link...should have had the sense to go to the web site myself.

There is a slight slope so I guess we will have to fit the anti roll bar to the tent.

Looking forward to the "breakfast truck" waking us up in the morning sunshine!

I shall be there from Monday to Friday. I decided, for lots of reasons, to give Sidmouth a miss this year and concentrate on the smaller Festivals which are non commercial and more "Fringe" oriented.Where the "Real Folk" is!!
I have also been asked to run a session at the Joiners Arms on the Tuesday so hope to see you there.

Hi Jim, Carole and Andy. We'll be there again this year. Called in last year for one session of the Tuesday - went home on Sunday! One of the best and friendliest festivals around. The locals are all very welcoming, taxi drivers generous, can't fault it. Jerry runs about for the entire week non stop, as is his smile. Can't wait to be there again this year.

Hi Jim & Richard
I'm sure you will enjoy Bideford - its a great little festival!
But I'll miss you at Sidmouth and I must take issue with you about your anti-Sidmouth comment:-
"I decided, for lots of reasons, to give Sidmouth a miss this year and concentrate on the smaller Festivals which are non commercial and more "Fringe" oriented - where the "Real Folk" is!!"
Yes, I like the smaller festivals as well but there's loads of fringe at Sidmouth and at Whitby for that matter, unlike many other large festivals such as Towersey & Chippenham.

Subject: RE: bideford festival
From: Jock O' Dreams

It's good to see I shall be in such good company!

Alan, I think you have put two and two together and made five! I am not "Anti Sidmouth" but I have come to the conclusion that BIGGER is not always better.
After working 7 straight 14 hr days last year putting the electrics into the Ham,Bulverton, Blackmore Gardens and the campsite I asked my self why? Is this folk? My answer was no, it is folk based CABERET!
Why do we do it ? Answer - For the benifit of a few "Stars" and their agents, record companies and the Shop Keepers and publicans of Sidmouth.Certainly the hard working task force , stewards and organisers don't make out of it!!
Yes Sidmouth did have a good "Fringe" but my experience last year of the new Regimen at the Ancor with it's Bolshie Owner, surly staff,Goons at the door and Bogos and Bagpipes somewhat changed my mind. I think My mind was finally made up when I experienced the infamous Clique at the Volunteer. I expect I would be waiting now for a song if Barbara Brown had not had a sharp word in someones ear on my behalf!
So as I said there was many reasons why I will miss Sidmouth this year but the main one is I am looking for small festivals where people sing to people not crowds and where commerce is kept to a minimum. I.E Bideford ect.

Maybe its my age!

Hi Jim
Sidmouth's loss is our gain (at Bideford, I mean). {Mind you, I do love Sidmouth too)

And Hi Alan
We shall miss you!
"Move along, Get along, Go, Move, Shift"
Thanks to the link to the campsite info - from which you can get to the main website www.bidefordfolkfestival.co.uk
The campsite is a bit of a walk but there are plans for a 'low cost bus-service'. Sorry, haven't got the latest info about this - and now shan't get chance to update it for a while

There is quite a line up this year (see the website) plus singarounds and sessions throughout the week etc. I'm MCing 'T-time at the Bethel' on the Tuesday 4-6.30. Anyone who wants a spot there, let me know. The cakes - and the acoustics - are wonderful.

I'm also running a singing workshop in the Bethel Tue-Fri 10.30 - noon. It's aimed at people who've seldom if ever sung solo in public but who would like to have a go. P'raps you've a friend or partner you'd like to encourage to come along.

Calling all Mud-elves - not sure how to do that - I've stood up and turned round three times. Will that do? And, in fact, just one elf would be enough.

Please could you retitle this thread. I should have set it up myself months ago. If so I would have called it "Bideford Folk Festival Devon Aug13-19 2007"

Thanks oh Mud-elf.

Ok Jim
I hadn't realised that you had been taken advantage of so much last Sidmouth! That's just not on! And I do agree with your assessment of the Volunteer.
Think of me on the Wednesday of Bideford week, as I'll probably be moving house that day! Ugh!
Hope to see you soon - I may even get to WHFF if I can find some clothes and my concertinas after my move!
Keep singing.

Have a great time, all of you!

It's sickening to have such a good festival on your doorstep, but being committed to be on the other side of the country, i.e. Broadstairs, that week. I know we'll have a wonderful week, as we have for the last - counts on fingers and toes and runs out... years, but still wish we could be back in good old Deb'n. Might get over there on the last day, but unlikely as we're off to France first thing on the Tuesday after.

Oh, b....r!

I have just learned I am MC on the 8 til 11 slot at the Joiners Arms so hope you can all make it.
I will run it under the "Twig" system (with intervention if required) as I think it is the fairest and fastest, so no need to book a slot!

Sue, the lure of the Tea & Cakes is too much to resist, can I book a slot too?

Oh dear! You might be Jim but Dim.....
I'm Sue but stu....pid
It's not Tuesday I'm MC at the Bethel - it's MONDAY!!!

If those of you who contacted me can still make it on the Monday that would be brilliant. I will also ensure that whoever is MCing on the Tuesday knows of my stupidity and encourage them to give you a slot if you haven't had one on Monday.

I've thrown any idea of a pre-prepared running order out of the window - it would help if you could confirm you are coming (or not) and what time you hope to arrive at the Bethel. I shall PM my mobile number for use after midnight on Sunday. PM me before that. I hope there'll be loads of others putting their names down too. 2 or 3 songs depending on how busy we are.

I'm also MCing Monday evening 8-11pm upstairs in the Joiners Arms. I'll probably run it as a 'dive-in' for the first 20min-half hour, then go round the room (one song each round)

The workshops for 'new singers' start Tuesday - which is probably what led me to put the wrong day.

See you soon.
Sue - newly returned from a super Sidmouth & now falling asleep.

Hello Sue The Borderer, sorry Angie Wright and I cannot be there this year. We were intending to but Angie has had a big op and although recovering very well camping would not be a good idea. Still we are there in spirit.
We are now living up in Blairgowrie so the journey would be a bit of a bind as well.

Angie has a few local gigs coming up so anyone who would like to come up this way there is lots happening all over Scotland.

Angie's gigs,

Thursday Aug 23rd Buskers Cafe at The Birnam Arts Centre , Birnam.

Saturday 1st September Songwriters Festival Taybank Hotel, Dunkeld.
see www.dogsdenmusic.co.uk for info.

Thurdsday 6th September Blairgowrie Folk Club, Blairgowrie.

Thursday September 27th, the Star Folk Club, St Andrews in the Square Glasgow, supporting Bram Taylor.

Sunday December 9th The wee Folk Club Royal Oak, Edinburgh.

www.sky-web.net/taggartandwright/

Have a good festival. Hope the weather on Tuesday/wednesday is not too bad.

First things first ... we've had a great time (Monday to Thursday) and brought a large part of Devon back with us (the mud'll wash off the car, but we'll keep the memories).

This was our first time at Bideford and we (not just me!) will definitely be back. There has been something for everyone all through the week and the lunchtime sessions in the Joiners have been absolutely tremendous - so many fine singers, such a range of songs. And the mixed session on Wednesday night in the bar was especially memorable (fancy all you hundreds of people going on a boat trip and missing most of it!).

Thanks Sue for all your efforts and who knows we might soon be accepting bookings as a duo ... Ann already knows that banana song backwards !

I hope the rest of the Festival gets the fine weather it deserves, to reward in some way all the effort put in by everyone responsible for putting on such a full and varied programme. I apologise to those friends we missed saying goodbye to yesterday, but I know we will meet up again before too long.

Now for the car wash ...

Henry

What an excellent week! I ONly managed Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday night, but enjoyed every minute of it, my visitors here went back formore on Sunday in the park, and they are not even folkies - well done Jerry Hilary & crew, your sleepless nights and hard work really paid off!
The Boat trip was fantastic, can we go all the way to Lundy next year please? Caught the last half of the westcountry concert, excellent and well MCd by Steph Norgaard,
Well done to the 60 or so singers who came to the singaround I MC'd in the joiners on Tuesday, I think I managed to include everyone who wanted to sing and it was great to have your comapny.
Thanks Andrew and Sussex carole for singing Childe, it is now Amber's favourite song too!
