Among the performers who played the Dawson series were such notables as Utah Phillips, Malvina Reynolds, John Allan Cameron, Jean Carignan, Michael Cooney, Jesse Winchester and many others. But the very FIRST performer I invited to open the series was Bruce Murdoch. Then, in 1974, when I took over running the Golem, the Montreal coffeehouse/folk club, the first performer I invited to play there, and the first performer who did play there in my tenure, was again Bruce Murdoch. Shortly after I started doing the radio show -- almost 14 years ago now -- I told Bruce I wanted him to come on the show. I'm so glad it's finally happening. I've really missed Bruce and his songs over the past too many years. I hope I can get a space near the front for his Ormstown concert. Mike Regenstreif |

Some mudcatters might even have jobs (unlike myself) but FR/FB starring MR can be downloaded after it's archived... Find the show you want here... http://www.ckutfolk.com/listen.html ...and click the right button on the mouse. OR option-click the only button. This should cause the show to be transferred to the computer. Then you need to play the mp3; lots of options; it will work with quicktime and/or iTunes, both available free. Is that all clear as mud? I'm not sure how quickly they archive, though... hope this helps (By the way those of you in faraway lands, this show is the best I've found so far, globally...) cheers John |

The other day I decide it might be a good idea to contact SOCAN, the performing rights agency, since my new album just got released on all the download shops. And, as we all know, them thar royalties are a GOOD thing. So I call them up and tell them I was with BMI in 1969! and that I did one song on T.V. 6 minutes playing time = $400 in royalties in 1969 dollars. Booyeah! They ask, "What's your name?." I tell them and hear ferocious typing on the computer...They go, "Oh, yeah, you're right here, what's your new address and phone number?" So kids, that's 38 YEARS ago, and they STILL got me... Which means, if some guy is taking a wee wee in Taiwan and he's humming one of my songs, these guys will find him. So, Bruce on the radio with Mike VILL BE AVAILABLE! ZAT iss fer sure.... And, the tip for today is, don't put that white iPod your kid gave you for your birthday in the toaster, hoping it will turn a golden brown. Those songs!!! YES!!! Like George P., "Last Man Standing" with its line "write to me when life's not so demanding" was my personal favorite. But for different reasons, I felt all the songs are definite keepers. If Mike R. has a show of best interviews with artists, I believe that the Bruce Murdoch interview should be included-because of the interview portion as well as the high quality of Bruce's songs. For instance, I found the remembrances Bruce shared about basket [night]clubs and of Richie Havens singing people outside of a back into the nightclub to be particularly interesting from a music/folk cultural standpoint. Of the bits I heard of Mr Peace once the stream was restored, I found it quite an improvement on the rest. No doubt when Mr Peace calls Mr Beer (whoever that is) he will let him know that I have already said so to him offlist. |

Cyril Tawney, Arlo Guthrie, Tom Russell, Bob Ryskiewicz, Jesse Winchester, Gretchen Peters and Leonard Cohen. Other artists not doing their own songs were Jennifer Warnes (an Ian Tyson song), Johnny Cash (a Tom Russell song), The Bluegrass Gospel Project (a Jesse Winchester song) and Swift Years (an instrumental). Almost every track, including the four by Ron Hynes, was A-list in my book. |

The first thing folks have to understand about Mike is that he's knowledgeable about folk music and sincere in his love for it. He's a great interviewer because to him it's about the person on the other side of the microphone and he checks the background of the people he has on, so he already knows the answers to many of the questions he asks. He has an exquisite sense of when to redirect, clarify or let his guest go on. That is rare in my experience with radio shows--and I've done many of them over the years. However, the quality of the man and his love for the music and people who make it shows in the transition. Gerry Goodfriend is up to speed on the way things are done, and while I know that Gerry will add his personal stamp, I also know the show will maintain its high quality standard, because Gerry is one good guy with a love for music that rivals Mike's. CKUT FM will continue to be in good hands. As to a festival for next year: I truly hope there will be one, Adrien. Perhaps you don't know, and if you don't you should, that it is a wonderful event. It's well organized (and I won't embarrass you by singling you out for praise in that regard, but praise you deserve). It was a pleasure to meet many of the festival committee members and people who did so much of the dog work to ensure that the folks on stage were treated like some kind of visiting VIPs and the folks in the audience were treated to a well-run festival. You have done with a cast of tens what many other festivals with a cast of hundreds have failed to do: namely, you make the performers feel appreciated and valued. That ain't as common as it should be. Thanks to your fire department, I was given a tour of two pieces of apparatus--their rescue vehicle and a rapid attack vehicle. They are a neat bunch of guys, and I was able to take away a good idea regarding motor vehicle stabilization for our department to consider. The people who displayed and sold their crafts were so polite and friendly. In fact, there were no miserable people there at all. When Bob, Chris and I took 20 minutes to prepare for the set, we went to the barn to park it and practise. I never leave my guitar unattended anywhere, ever, at all, under any circumstance, period. I did there and wasn't the least worried. Parking was great, seating good, bathrooms available and camping area for people with trailers or tents were to hand. Many people who'd stayed here and there at the festival made mention of the friendliness of the town's people and merchants. The stage crew was something else. It was so good to hear and see them keeping track of the clock and ensuring that performers stuck to their times. It was so enjoyable, and I want to thank you for making it so. My one regret was not having enough time to sit and relax with my friends. Another 7,642 hours would have been nice. If you invite me again, I will be sure to get there and stay from Thursday night until Monday morning. However, I did get to meet some folks from the Mudcat and also re-meet some friends from 35 years ago. There were personal highlights for me, but right up there with that has to be seeing and hearing Noah Zacharin again, meeting his lovely partner who is also a fantastic singer/musician, and having the opportunity to sit with the two of them and write a song together from 1:00 - 4:30 AM, Sunday. Noah's guitar work was right on, and he wasn't at all bothered by syncopations. Laura Fernandez's voice is beautiful, and her harmonies were crucial to the song's development. Noah is a fine lyric writer and he knows when the rules should be ignored. It was an experience I will treasure, because egos got left at the door and we were able to put together a song that absolutely rocks. It is at once new and exciting, old and familiar. We still have to look again at the third stanza, but the rest is as good as anything I've heard in years, and like the man said, it does the job. Thanks to you both. Willie Dunn and I hooked up about 10 years ago. Ended up touring and recording together for awhile. He remains one of my closest friends. We helped each other out of some personal doldrums. He's playing in Lunenburg this week-end, by the way. Migmaw country and the bluenose...so he still gets out there every now and then.. I once had supper at Vignault's house in Deux Montanges...nice man.. I used to knock around a lot on the other side of the linguistic/cultural scene of Quebec. Still do a bit. I was lucky. Still am. funny he married a blue-eyed blonde from TMR, tho. Add that to the fact that my current assignment involves Smithfield and organizing slaughter/packinghouse workers in South Dakota, northwestern Iowa, and northeastern Nebraska, which means I fly out on Monday, and fly home on Friday, and it makes it difficult to get it done. But we are managing. I am playing a bit of music out here, and coming to know some Mexicano musicians, which ought to have an interesting influence on my music. I am having to use my Spanish, which I haven't done on a daily basis in some years, but it is coming back nicely. Ah ..... the life of a union organizer/folksinger. It ain't fer everyone, but it is who I am. Hope we get the chance to sing together one day. I wanted to make the Canadian gathering so badly, but I just couldn't squeeze it in with the move. Sketches for the archives..I wouldn't want to see it all forgotten. there was a funny episode of the Simpsons where Homer ate a bunch of 'magic' jalepeno peppers, and ended up 'lost on the high range', but was befriended by a talking coyote whose voice was done by Johnny Cash... brillant..... i'll let you know when it's recorded, in a few weeks i reckon.... Those strange states of conciousness that one can be in. Even Wayne Dyer on new pbs show quoted old man saying One day woke up and knew I had no need of a personal history. being like dogs and birds free no need for clothes or diff public selfs true to his soul the pieces of sky meaning spirit or soul too high to get caught up down here. That is what it meant for me.. Reading lastest,Had memory of Murdock, Havens being on same bill at Blue Lantern and Willie Dunn showing up now and then Thank you so Bankley. The Seven Steps, The Rainbow. There was a room downstairs called the Totem Pole, used to play there occasionally with a band "The Urge", first saw Bruce, Sean, Van Ronk and many others up close and personal.It's now a 'Subways'... The Pam-Pam across the street was the watering hole., I think there's still a resto-bar there.... good times....... Ron |

Ham I think the Dylan tape from the Finjan was actually recorded by Jack Nissenson and that Michael Nerenberg eventually ended up with it. It's become a fairly common Dylan bootleg and is quite easy to come by in CD form on the Dylan bootleg sites. |

Noah said something about Bromberg touring again after many years and Mike responded by saying something along the lines of (I'm paraphrasing) sometimes an artist needs to go away from music for a period of years before coming back better than ever. I thought of Bruce Murdoch when he said that. |
