I heard a lyric that started ' I don't care if it rains or freezes, s'long as I got my plastic Jesus glued to the dashboard of my car' back in 1969...it was recorded by the Gold Coast Singers, a couple of Californian wits..has anyone got the lyrics please?

It's called Plastic Jesus. Paul Newman sang this one in "Cool Hand Luke". He learned a few chords on the banjo just to play it.

Here's lots of lyrics for it

A snippet I heard once:

. . . I don't worry 'bout traffic scrimmage
As long as I've got my graven image
Ridin' on the dashboard of my car. . . .

When I'm a-goin' fornicatin'
I got my ceramic Satan
Leerin' from the dashboard of my truck
Behind the wheel, I'm hard an' hurtin'
The women know it's damn well certain
All I'm really lookin' for's a...

And then there was the guy back in the '70s who saw the same slogan-festooned car in Berkeley over and over again who came up with:

I don't need no Red Book, now
'Cause I got my Chairman Mao
Standin' on the dashboard of my '68 Chevelle

et cetera (there's a lot more)

The tune is also used by Persephone Morris - can't remember which dance though.

Somewhere, in my archives, I have a number of old copies of "Sing Out," to which many of us old folkies once subscribed. One of them has the lyrics to "Plastic Jesus" included. I gather that this song, whatever it started out to be, enventually became a compilation of verses submitted by many writers.

Plastic Jesus is on one of the CDs in The Best of Broadside 1962-88; originally recorded by Ernie Marrs and the Marrs Family, and was written by Ed Rush and George Cromarty, two members of the Goldcoast Singers, based upon an African-American camp meeting song.
