I'm looking for the music of the song "FLICKER". It's a campfire song. Does anyone know where I can find the sheet music?

Hi Debbie and welcome to Mudcat.....Sorry we don't do sheet music, but I think you can find the lyrics in the database( DT ) by typing flicker in the search box in the upper right hand corner of this page.

But Debbie, it seems to me that if you print that out on a SHEET of paper, you could call it SHEET music.

A flicker in the campfire, Wind in the pines The moon in the heavens, The stars that shine A place where people gather Make friends of all kinds, A place where old man trouble Is always left behind.

Oh, give me the light of the campfire, Warm and bright And give me some friends to sing with I'll be here all night Love is for those who find it I found right here Just you and the light of the campfire And the songs I love to hear

Well, thanks for the vote of approval. Flicker does have a catchy tune. I tried to send a vocal rendition to Debbie, hoping that would be enough to learn the tune, but it bounced back. :)

I don't have the music OR the words, but I fondly remember the song from my GS camping days...Somebody is sure to find it for you. I'm going to start a search myself, and if I find it, I'll send it.

Good luck.

Debbie, I've really forgetten this song. Like so many others I am remembering bits and pieces of it form Girl Scout camp back in the 50 and 60's. I'll work on trying to remeber the melody. It's a really neat song and I'd like to refresh my memory. Hope the melody gets to you someway. bet

Good old Barry Finn called me from New England and sang a sea chantey into my answering machine. Maybe somebody could contact Debbie by e-mail and arrange to sing this song to her over the phone, eh?

I found another verse.

Love is like a warm fire, soft and low
And when you find your true love,
Your heart will surely know
And as the leaves start falling
And friends begin to part,
The memory of each summer
Will live within our hearts.

I have the tune coded as a QBASIC file, but hardly anyone knows how to use it anymore. I sent it to Debbie. I don't know if she was able to decode it or use it.

Hey Ani!

About 20 years ago when I lived in Baldwinsville, NY I had a neighbor who said she and some others had written this song at a camp many years before. She was about 40 at the time. She sang the song and I must admit I liked what I heard and I haven't heard it since.

I hope you can sing it for me in June.

Don

OK...so I learned this song when I was at (GS) Camp Glengarra (foothills of the Adarondacks in upstate, NY) in the early '90s. It was one of my favorites from the camp. I would like to know how close it is to the original!

I'm going to see if I can record it and post it onto my myspace space in the morning. I'll post again when I get it up.

From: Joe Offer

The U.S. Girl Scout Sangam Git/Sangam Songbook has a slightly different version:

FLICKER
(writer unknown)

The flicker of a campfire, the wind in the pines,
The moon in the heavens, the stars that shine,
A place where people gather, meet friends of all kinds,
A place where old man trouble is always left behind:

CHORUS
So give me the light of a campfire, warm and bright.
And give me some friends to sing with, I'll be here all night.
Love's for those who find it, I found mine right here,
Just you and I and the campfire and the songs we love to hear.
Da da da da da da da da da da

2nd Verse
The peacefulness of the silence of night,
The sun in the morning, shining so bright,
The place where campers gather
Making friends for all time(s).
A place where city troubles are always left behind.

From memory, . . .   I sing a slightly different tune.

I use guitar chords G Em C D7 for about every line

Here it is, the tune and some words:

I've written another song to the words, personal.

The chords are:
G Em C D for every line, just in order.

I'm a soprano and I do it at capo 2.

Hope that helps!

I've been working on a folklore study of camp songs for some time - finally getting ready to do something serious with it - you can check it/me out at aunttessiesongbag.blogspot.com.

One of the songs I want to feature is "Flicker" - you said you had met a woman who said she had helped write it. Can you give any more details - like name, type of camp, etc.

Since this may involve confidential information, you may send me a private email at aunttessie@yahoo.com
