18 Aug 07 - 07:22 AM (#2128476) Subject: RE: BS: Newquay Fire,Cornwall. From: Flash Company Heard this on the radio on the way home from Altrincham, no real detail caught other than 'a Cornish Hotel'. Had to check it out as soon as I got home, some of my favourite places are Cornish hotels! Horrible news, I used to work for a Fire Prevention company and know a bit about the horrors of fire. People just don't realise how devastating a fire can be, or how little it needs to start one. Hope the six missing people turn up OK. FC |

19 Aug 07 - 08:55 AM (#2129071) Subject: RE: BS: Newquay Fire,Cornwall. From: Emma B The extent of the devastation can be seen in some news photos here to quote from the same news article - "The blaze is likely to claim the biggest loss of life in a UK hotel fire since seven people died in a blaze at the Worsley Hotel in Maida Vale, West London, on December 13, 1974. Five years before that 11 died at the Rose and Crown Hotel, Saffron Walden, Essex, on Boxing Day, 1969. That fire prompted the Fire Precautions Act of 1971, after which hotels and boarding houses were required for the first time to have a fire certificate to prove their safety." "Regulations that came into force last October scrapped traditional fire safety certificates and allowed non-domestic premises, including hotels, to carry out their own risk assessments on fire safety. This is done by the owners of premises or managers designated to take on the responsibility. They are required to keep a record for inspection, but do not have to consult fire officers or seek expert advice....... One senior Cornwall fire officer told The Mail on Sunday: 'The Newquay fire will be the first big test of the new rules. Many of us are deeply uneasy about hotels inspecting themselves. Any records will probably lie in the burning rubble" It appears that there are yet more moves in both main political parties to do away with "unncessary red tape" |

20 Aug 07 - 09:49 AM (#2129633) Subject: RE: BS: Newquay Fire,Cornwall. From: GUEST,PMB There weren't enough fire crews to cover the emergency. The fire service is constantly cutting out fire stations, reducing crews, and forcing the remaining crews to be "more flexible", i.e. work longer hours. The cuts have been vigorously opposed by the Fire Brigades Union, who are consistently presented in the media as hidebound union barons. Can anyone give me a good reason why the people (accountants, chief executives and suchlike) who instigated these cuts should not be imprisoned for manslaughter? |
20 Aug 07 - 10:03 AM (#2129644) Subject: RE: BS: Newquay Fire,Cornwall. From: The PA Cant help but agree. The idea of making cuts in any emergency service seems mad to me. This is surely the result. Also, I understand that both extending ladder/turntables were out of use, undergoing repairs. Two to cover the whole of Cornwall cannot be enough. In this area with all the problems of holiday traffic there should be more equipment and resources than they obviously already have, spread over a wider area. Though I suppose those holding the purse strings will say they just cannot afford it - what price a life ? |
20 Aug 07 - 10:04 AM (#2129645) Subject: RE: BS: Newquay Fire,Cornwall. From: GUEST,leeneia It seems to me that there are far too many "hotels" which are merely housing cheaply converted. I have been in European and British hotels with one, small, winding, wooden staircase and no fire escape. (I don't stay in places like that any longer.) I don't know that this particular building was like that, but it could have been. Fire safety is certainly something to think about when travelling, but it's never mentioned in the guidebooks. |
20 Aug 07 - 10:08 AM (#2129647) Subject: RE: BS: Newquay Fire,Cornwall. From: The PA This hotel was a very big hotel 50+ rooms not a large converted house. |
20 Aug 07 - 03:13 PM (#2129850) Subject: RE: BS: Newquay Fire,Cornwall. From: Scooby Doo As i said above the fire exit eas made of wood. Newquay's both fire platforms were broken which is very unusual. Even today the building is smouldering. Scooby |
20 Aug 07 - 08:30 PM (#2130042) Subject: RE: BS: Newquay Fire,Cornwall. From: Tattie Bogle I stayed in a hotel in Canada which was entirely timber-built and the fire escape was a knotted rope that you threw out of the window and then shinned down.
