24 Sep 07 - 08:22 PM (#2156698) Subject: side by side lyrics From: GUEST,alan Are there any more verses to "Side By Side" ("We ain't got a barrel of money...")other than the ones we already know? It's a quite short song other wise. |
24 Sep 07 - 08:27 PM (#2156702) Subject: RE: side by side lyrics From: Peace Ray Charles' version. Oh, we ain't got a barrel of money, Maybe we're ragged and funny; But we'll travel along, singin' a song, Side by side. Don't know what's comin' tomorrow, Maybe it's trouble and sorrow; But we'll travel the road, sharin' our load, Side by Side. Through all kinds of weather, What if the sky should fall; but As long as we're together, It doesn't matter at all. When they've all had their quarrels and parted, We'll be the same as we started; Just travelin' along, singin' a song, Side by Side. |
24 Sep 07 - 09:23 PM (#2156747) Subject: Lyr Add. SIDE BY SIDE From: Genie I don't know if there's a preliminary verse (intro), as was common back when this was written, or if there's another verse. But I'd offer minor tweaking ('correction') of the lyrics, as per the original: Oh, we ain't got a barrel of money, Maybe we're ragged and funny; But we travel along, singing a song, Side by side. Oh, we don't know what's coming tomorrow. Maybe it's trouble and sorrow, But we travel the road, sharing* our load, Side by Side. Through all kinds of weather, What if the sky should fall? Just as long as we're together, It doesn't matter at all. When they've all had their quarrels and parted, We'll be the same as we started; Just traveling along, singing a song, Side by Side. *Changing the lyrics to "singing" instead of "singin'" is not by way of correction. I'm actually not sure which way the original sheet music was written. This song, by the way, an old Vaudeville song, has a really neat counterpoint duet part that uses the same lyrics but different phrasing and a kind of harmony tune. |
24 Sep 07 - 09:28 PM (#2156753) Subject: RE: side by side lyrics From: Mike Miller Here's the verse.
Creepin' over the hill I guess that it always has And it, always, will. Well, that's how I feel about someone And somebody feels about me We are true to each other And that's the way it's gonna be And though we aint got a barrel of...... I've been singing it, that way, for years. There was a popular version of it in the 50's but I don't remember the artist. Mike |

25 Sep 07 - 08:37 AM (#2156980) Subject: RE: side by side lyrics From: clueless don Thinking of this song reminds me of another song: Wherever we go Whatever we do We're sure to go through it together Wherever we are We may not go far but sure as a star it's together That's about the point where I start to forget the lyrics (I'm sure I could find them with google.) I have a notion that this song was associated with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, but I could be very wrong. Don |

Through thick and through thin, all out or all in. And whether it's win, place or show. With you for me and me for you, we'll muddle through whatever we do. Together, wherever we go. Rose & Herbie: Wherever we go, whatever we do, we're gonna go through it together. Rose: Wherever we sleep, if prices are steep, Herbie:We'll always sleep cheaper together. 25 Sep 07 - 11:06 PM (#2157480) Subject: RE: side by side lyrics From: Genie Back in the '50s it was not unusual for several artists to record, even chart, with the same song. I believe either Dinah Shore or Rosemary Clooney made the Hit Parade with this song back then, too, but I could be wrong. It was sung on many a TV variety show, too, so maybe that's where I remember Dinah singing it. |
25 Sep 07 - 11:50 PM (#2157495) Subject: ADDPOP: Side By Side From: Joe Offer Gee, it's hard to believe that "Together, Wherever We Go" is by Sondeheim. Heck, I think of Sondheim as a contemporary, and yet that songs seems like it has been here forever. Am I getting really old or something? My wife comes from Woonsocket, Rhode Island, from the Polish part of a predominantly French Canadian town. For the French Canadians, the expression is "side by each." Cranky Yankee (of Newport) send me a cartoon from Rhode Islander Don Bosquet, with two guys in seersucker suits and skimmers, singing, We were travelin' along Singin' a song Side by each. So, anyhow, since that joke wouldn't go over with anyone who has no ties to Rhode Island, here are the definitive lyrics, from Reading Lyrics, by Gottlieb and Kimball: Side By Side (Harry Woods, 1927) [Verse 1] See that sun in the morning Peeking over the hill? I'll bet you're sure it always has And sure it always will. That's how I feel about someone, How somebody feels about me. We're sure we love each other That's the way we'll always be. [Refrain] Oh! we ain't got a barrel of money, Maybe we're ragged and funny, But we'll travel along, singin' a song, Side by side. Don't know what's comin' tomorrow, Maybe it's trouble and sorrow, But we'll travel the road, sharin' our load, Side by Side. Through all kinds of weather, What if the sky should fall? Just as long as we're together, It doesn't matter at all. When they've all had their quarrels and parted, We'll be the same as we started, Just travelin' along, singin' a song, Side by Side. [Verse 2] We're all hunting for something, Something we don't know what. 'Cause none of us are satisfied With things we know we've got. We all forget about moonlight As soon as we've given our vow, But we'd all be so happy If we'd start and sing right now: [Repeat Refrain] |

I've just been looking through a book of twenties songs that has been sitting on top of my piano for ages, when I came across Side by Side, complete with the two verses posted above and the piano score. It's not the first time that I have spent time looking for a lyrics or music, only to find it right under my nose, in a book that I had bought for another song. DC |

21 Jan 18 - 12:35 PM (#3900887) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Side by Side (Harry Woods) From: keberoxu There are TWO lyrics on this thread and I have something to contribute about each. Joe Offer, I agree with you about Wherever We Go, Together. I believe the songwriter is Jule Styne, not Stephen Sondheim. And which of them wrote "Gypsy!" anyway? I mean, that goes back to when Angela Lansbury and Ethel Merman were singing the mother role, I mean the mother -- Rose, wasn't it -- of Gypsy Rose Lee. Sigh. I'm not as old as THAT. Ethel Merman was before my time, honest, but "Gypsy!" is the musical with "Everything's Coming Up Roses" which I will ALWAYS hear in Ethel Merman's voice. |
21 Jan 18 - 12:46 PM (#3900891) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Side by Side (Harry Woods) From: keberoxu Now, Harry Woods' "Side By Side." Because I enjoy listening to those little radio stations that play Oldies-But-Goodies vintage popular music, I have heard an elderly recording of this song. It opened with verse 1, then proceeded to the chorus. I don't recall Verse 2 at all, my presumption is Verse 2 was left out of this performance. And the singer was: Frankie Laine. So that's DECADES ago. And that must by Kay Starr whose vocal performance I remember hearing a VERY long time ago. A big BROAD performance, but then Kay Starr was like that. Ray Charles sang "Side By Side" on his duet album, Ray Charles and Betty Carter. No verses, AND the song is done in double-time, REALLY fast. |
