05 Oct 07 - 09:43 AM (#2164402) Subject: RE: BS: www.crooked lawyers.com From: Rapparee Like every profession, there are good and bad lawyers. I happen to know a lot of good ones -- honest people who work hard for their clients, sometimes pro bono. Take Dave, for instance: a public defender who could be making a LOT more in private practice, he is decompressing after losing a high-profile murder trial (the girl was stabbed 27 times by two of her high school classmates). He put in, quite literally, hundreds of hours -- but it's kinda hard to defend when your client and his friend videotaped themselves planning the murder, videotaped the body and your client standing over it, and commented on it afterwards on the tape -- all on the same tape. I could cite others, in and out of criminal practice. And I could cite those who traded services for sex, sold cocaine from their offices, slept through trials, and attempted to bribe juries and judges. A lawyer seems "crooked" when a) the client is charged more than the client thinks proper and/or in spite of the best efforts of the lawyer the client loses (sometimes because the client doesn't tell their lawyer everything). Check with the bar association. |

08 Oct 07 - 09:47 AM (#2166465) Subject: RE: BS: www.crooked lawyers.com From: GUEST,leeneia Sure, there are crooked lawyers, but a lawyer is an officer of the court and can get in trouble if caught. Insurance people, however, can and do lie and cheat with no fear of repercussion. How come there isn't the same popular sentiment against insurance company employees? Is it because 'insurance adjuster' is too hard to say? |
08 Oct 07 - 10:06 AM (#2166475) Subject: RE: BS: www.crooked lawyers.com From: Bobert Question: Why does New Jersey have all the toxic waste dumps and Washington, D.C. all the lawyers??? Answer: New Jersey won the coin flip and got to pick 1st... BaDoom... Awww, nevermind them lawyer jokes... I've had lots of dealings with lawyers over the years and most are fine people but if you need one it doesn't hurt to ask around for recommendations... And another thing, lawyers ain't one size fits all so you have to find the right one for your particular need... I've got one who does estates, wilkls and complicated probate stuff that prolly couldn't defend himself for jay-walking... And then I know another guy who is foul mouthed and screams and rants with other folks attorneys and finds ways of getting things "settled" without having to go to court... Like I said, ask around... 09 Oct 07 - 03:12 AM (#2167049) Subject: RE: BS: www.crooked lawyers.com From: Joe Offer I still regret that I didn't buy flowers from my divorce lawyer when the divorce was finished, back in 1993. My lawyer was just terrific - even my ex-wife liked and trusted her her more than her own lawyer. My lawyer said her first interest was the welfare of the children, and she didn't want to represent anybody who wanted to take his or her former spouse "to the cleaners." My lawyer's hourly rate wasn't cheap, but she didn't bill me for all the time she spent. She said her secretary got after her for not billing all the hours she was entitled to. I think if you want to be honest and honorable in a court proceeding, you can find an honest lawyer quite easily. If you want to be a cheapskate or if you want to take advantage of somebody else, you may find a hard time finding an honest lawyer to represent you. My ex-wife was (and is) a cheapskate, and she ended up relying on my lawyer to get the job done. -Joe- |
