Subject: Help: program to speed up recording
From: Gene

some 27 years ago i taped a program off the radio and
the TAPE deck went into a mode where the sound is
SLOWED down....like instead of a 33 1/3 rpm record sound
it is about half that....i ran across that old cassette
tape today while scrounging around for something else..

--- I need a program to speed up the wav file...on the 'puter...

any suggestions....i had a program like that ages ago
but no longer remember the name of it..

thanks
Gene

Hi Gene
I use CoolEdit (now replaced by Adobe Audition0 to edit sound files. It has a facility to speed up recordings without affecting pitch. These programmes cost money but you could try downloading Audacity for free - it might do the same thing.

Acoustica "Spin It Again" will also do it for you. You can do it straight from the cassette or take your wave file to "Mixcraft" and do it that way.
Again, these programs cost money but they do offer free demos.
Good Luck.

I agree with Eddie1. I am constantly impressed with Adobe Audition which I believe to be the most versatile of the sound editing programmes, both as a quick-fix and a more detailed tool.
Will also correct gradual speed failure due to batteries running down.

"speed up recordings without affecting pitch"
That's not what's needed in this case. If the tape was running at the wrong speed both pitch and speed are affected together, which is actually technically easier to fix.

Audacity will do either speeding up without changing pitch, or what you want on this occasion speeding up with pitch change.

Audacity is free, I use the 1.3.3 beta and have done for a few months without many problems.

I record out church services and from time to time speed up the sermon on the recording, got to 20% reduction in time without anyone noticing in one instance - the preacher was really slow. Next time he comes I'm going to try for 50%.

In Audacity the Effect->Change Tempo will change the speed and maintain the pitch. Effect->Change Speed does what you want change speed and tempo at the same time.

I agree with Simon G (poetry!) - Audacity will do the job brilliantly and it's free.
Wavelab's also very good, but more complicated.

Note,,,Audacity does note do this in real time....you must select the audio, apply the desired change, THEN listen.

Changing the speed of a music in real time is an interesting concept, to say the least.

If you meditate on it for long enough either your head will explode or you will attain enlightenment.

At least a time machine will be needed...

The free download Best Practice, which I learned about on Mudcat, alters speed and/or pitch independently, while the file is actually playing. Karaoke function as well. Play along with your favorite recordings at a tempo and in a key of your own choosing.

Adobe Audition can be downloaded and activation key generators can be found on the internet.

Of course using an activation key you find on the internet is illegal in most cases.

Audacity is free and you can use it with a clean conscious! Someone from Mudcat turned me on to it and I have been using it the past couple of weeks. For the price ($0.00) it is better than programs worth twice that much!!

Seriously, it is a powerful piece of software considering it is freeware. I was amazed at some of the tools it has. I used the pitch control to fit one of my radio shows to time (only 2%!)and it worked without any artifacts.

Adobe Audition is a powerful piece of kit, and extremely simple to use. While Audacity is less user friendly, and needs a bit more computer savvy, especially if you want to export to MP3, I've yet to find anything it can't do which audition can.

For a piece of legal and legitimate freeware, it is pretty damned amazing.

"and needs a bit more computer savvy, especially if you want to export to MP3,..."

It just needs a DLL added (LAME)..not very tricky. Directions are on website.

Aside from the "Key Gen" thing, they're all good suggestions. We each have our favourites and there are many more. Many of them free.
