Getaway 2008

Subject: Getaway 2008
From: beardedbruce

While we are all thinking about it...

The 2008 dates will be October 3-6, 2008.
The 2009 dates will be October 2-5, 2009.

With proper advanced planning ( get into town the THURSDAY night and get to Chance's party that night, stay over until Wednesday and catch the Sea Chanty sing in Wheaton) it CAN all be arranged.

The Sea Chanty sing is the 1st Tuesday of the month there...

But I am sure we can find things to do later in the week.

All these years and we've never been to a Getaway, because Kris is a public school teacher and we'd really need to take two or three days outside of the weekend off, to go to the full thing and have enough time for travel, not to get back home half dead.

She's talking seriously about getting out at the end of this school year. Hope springs eternal...

I'm thinking I might splurge and actually take A weekend at MDRF, then Getaway, Wheaton, and end up in Massachusetts for another ren-faire over Columbus day. hmmmmmm - possibilities.

There's another Sea Chanty sing in Baltimore the second Wednesday of every month at the Wharf Rat in Fells Point, if the calendar works that way, not to mention the Institute Of Musical Traditions Concert Series with folk acts every Monday night at that time of year. (Hammered Dulcimer player Maggie Sansone was there last night).

A scan of both the the FSGW newsletter and the Weekender supplement published every Friday in the Washington Post will bring you up to date on the rich music and dance scene here, while The Weekender will also clue you in on what's at the museums, theatres and such and other odd special events in town as well. Historical sites abound in Maryland Notheren Virginia and DC and it's an easy day trip to seashore, bay , piedmont, river and mountain settings as well as Frederick Annapolis and Baltimore.

Friends from FSGW or Mudcat will put you up through a post on a Mudcat thread and link up for rides or shelter on the other legs of your trip as well.

The music and the friendships to be made are lasting.

Go for it!

I'm thinking I may be able to make this one. It's been two years since I last attended one, with Barry Finn and his wife Justine.

Would there be general interest in another sea shanty workshop?

I'd also be interested in leading a workshop based on adapting the poems of old sailor-poets for singing.

Cheerily,

Dammit, Leo, this is grossly unfair. EVERY YEAR you come up with a cousin or nephew or some other ilk that is either giving birth, dying or getting married or all of the above.

Because you can't get to Maine from anywhere except Boston, and who wants to go to Boston?

Peter (Nuck, Nyuck).

PS - Eastern upstate New York, like the Adirondacks, might be a good compromise. Like Old Songs but without having to pay for the "name" musicians that a lot of us spend very little time listening to anyway.

Means I can go ahead and try to convert my FFMs to an actual ticket. Hope it's not too late.

For once, I reserved the right weekend in my calendar!   (And I don't expect family obligations to be an obstacle this year either.)

Next on the list: Which airport is the best to fly into?    And how about "out of," in case I decide to do a 3-way (PDX -> Baltimore/DC area -> Raleigh, NC ->PDX) instead of a simple round trip. Enny suggestions?

Enough of this Maine seagull-poop. The place is ^$&#ing freezing! IF it weren't for the warmth of our friends there, the place would have shattered off the coast to bob around in the Atlantic for a while before drifting South and melting!

The sainted FSGW has finally seen their way clear to creeping South again, so people can sing without the distraction of shivering and chattering teeth! Forget anything you heard about any 3-way at the old Ramblewood, except the number of people in mittens and scarves and blankets you hope sat VERY close to you on benches so you didn't freeze to death after dark. Or the number of people you were sure to wake up with your epithets when the shower water hit you and the piece of saran wrap they covered the stalls with blew up.

Dani (not having seen the new place, but looking forward to a bunk without needing 4 down comforters)

Kendall and Jacqui have a large enough piece of property for all to camp on. There is a motor home in the driveway for an extra bath as well as a hannaford's with clean rest rooms within walking distance. The men can use the woods.
I suggest January 23rd and 24th. That should produce a real taste of Maine and the lobster will have hard shells.

Gawd - don't the Old Coot go off on one! Anyone would think that we were going on a wilderness journey although, for a Mainer, I suppose that's what it feels like, leaving Maine.

It would serve him right if you all turned up one weekend next summer and camped in the yard. We could have a right good time if you choose the warm weekend - Dani could borrow an L.L.Bean down jacket to keep her warm and I'll have crocheted a few extra afghans for her to snuggle under.

Feeding's no problem - we'll just put out the mosquito traps and you can decide if you want a wing or a leg.

Freda - does this mean you're thinking of coming over? That really would be the icing on the cake! If you get to the USA a trip to Maine before, or after the Getaway is mandatory - we'll kidnap you if there's no other way to get you here.

I'll let you into the secret, but you must promise not to tell anybody.

Maine really is "The Way Life Should Be".

Problem is, if too many people get to hear about it they will all want to come and live here and then we'd get overcrowded. So, we just let on that living here is not easy and tell everyone about the downside. That way we can keep it a secret for just those we choose to invite!

Ah, I was hoping that was it.

In that light, I am very much looking forward to this year's easterly/downeasterly jaunt -- blackflies, mosquitoes, frostbite, mud, incendiary hot spells, inedible crustacea and all!

(Would Maine before Getaway or after be better -- errr, less tortuous? You have all summer to answer that.)

Dani, my dear, I will be as specific as I can. I live here because I was born here. I was born here because I wanted to be near my Mother.
I stay here out of habit. Some other reasons:
1. No earthquakes
2. No tornadoes
3. No brush fires
4. No mudslides.
5. No hurricanes
6. The second lowest crime rate in the country.(Second only to Vermont. A beautiful, civilized state but no lobsters or ocean.
7. No poison snakes, spiders, or scorpions.
8. No dangerous animals.

However, the state is getting warmer every year, and it is very hard to buy a car without A/C.

I love Maine. It has a certain character that seems to be native to the state. A panache' if you will.

Grand state of Maine
Proudly we sing
To tell your praises to the land
To shout your praises til the echos ring
Should fate unkind send us to roam
The scent of the fragrant pine
The tang of the salty sea will call us home.

Old Pine Tree state, your woods fields and hills
Your lakes, streams and rockbound coast
Will ever fill out hearts with thrills
And though we seek far and wide
Our search will be in vain
To find a fairer spot on earth than Maine Maine Maine.

One of those Maniacal songs, I presume?

-----------------------------------------------------------

Everyone...DO remember sleeping arangements at this camp are 44.053% UPPER bunk beds! If we get near capacity, decisions must be made. Last year was not a particular problem; but folks who couldn't come in November, and who were ill, and who had to save up money, and who just 'didn't get around to it' are talking about coming this year.

This is a camp used largely by Methodist youth, who are assigned rooms and are segregated by sex...with ALL beds used. I believe absolute capacity is...ummm...202? But we have more...ummm...'mature' attendees, many of whom cannot negotiate upper bunks.

This may not be an issue, but unlike that last 'cold' camp, which had over 350 'possible' spaces, we have to juggle things here.

well, Genie...like who stays up late, who snores loudest, who has kids, who doesn't get along with certain people, who is bashful at bedtime...etc...combined with who can't climb into an upper bunk!

The hardest job in the entire known Universe is looking a a map of the cabin layouts, a list of registered people, and moving names around until it seems almost possible! (I 'think' it is harder than the workshop juggling...but others may differ)

Well, I don't mind an upper bunk (I need the exercise), and I'd love to be in an all-night jam cabin -- where snoring wouldn't be such a problem unless it's louder than a walrus. If I'm really tired, I can usually sleep through about anything. Plus, I have ear plugs.
I just hope the cabins aren't so hot and stuffy that my asthma would keep me awake.

I sort of gathered there are not co-ed cabins, but it doesn't matter to me if I'm with all females or not.   It's prob'ly gonna be too cold in the Baltimore area in October to be running around in my skivvies anyway.

I still need advice about airports and ground transportation, though.   The plane ticket I can get with FF miles, I think, but I'd like not to spend and arm and a leg on taxis, shuttles, or car rental (makes it hard to walk and play guitar).    Do Mudcatters set up any kind of carpooling network to connect Getaway participants?

05 Apr 08 - 05:20 PM (#2307801)
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008
From: Big Mick

Yes, Genie, there will be carpooling. Probably the best airport would be Baltimore, or if it works better you can fly into DC. There will be plenty of Catters coming that way. I would pick you up, but I am likely going to be driving in from Michigan. I might fly and rent a car, we will see what gas prices look like as we get closer. Accomodations are kind o catch as catch can. I like bottom bunks cause I am not called Big Mick for nothing.

This is going to be a great Getaway weekend.

All the best,

Mick

Dani...sounds good until early arrivers get settled in in a 'comfy' way, and folks who arrive at 11PM can't figger out where to go, or they can't find 3 bunks together...etc. It is 'possible' to trade around a teeny bit, among those who are already there...but best to have most of it planned when quarter are tight..

and Genie...we usually provide ear-plugs! (started a few years ago when we had some open dorms and several wold-class snorers.)

And yes, we do try to link those flying in with locals or anyone driving in at the right times. We 'usually' can find someone a ride. Post when you have flight times set. BWI airport is often best choice, but Dulles and Reagan National have been used. A few times, it has actually worked better for someone to go into Philadelphia or Newark to meet someone driving in from that area. (Skarpi may need something like that this year)

A few folks like to rent cars...or have 9 guitars and plans to stay around for 2 weeks..*grin*)

Dani..we do have a place on the registration form to list preferences for certain things...who you 'want' to room with, quiet spot....etc. But 40 years experience has told us it is good to have most of the allocation in the hands of one person who knows both the camp and most of the people. Thanks for the info on airports, carpooling, earplugs, etc., folks.   Sounds like I'm really gonna be able to make it this year.

BTW, how important is it to bring our axes with us?   I don't like to take my old Martin with me on planes, especially when it's not a non-stop flight and I can't take her on board with me. But I have trouble playing anything that doesn't have a narrow neck and light-gauge strings. Are there usually a lot of different guitar types that people will let others use occasionally in a jam, sing-around, or the concert?

I may bring my itty bitty Ibanez, since I can take it on board. Doesn't make a lot of noise, but it's very portable.   Or maybe I'll just bring the Sigma. The action and sound aren't as good as the real Martin, but it would be much less a heartbreak if it got lost, stolen, or broken.
What do you other 'foreigners' do?

BTW, I can handle a Martin D28 or D35, as long as the strings aren't too heavy and/or I don't have to do more than a song or two. Something about Martins, makes playing a bigger guitar easier.   Bouzoukis - well, that's a whole nuther story.

The remaining 4 of us had to make do with the 2 bunks that he left us, pretty hard when they're both are uppers but we found them to be comfy enough. Does that tell you how big they are, the bunks, not Mick! now this yr if Micks gonna be in the same room again, I want the arangement to be one Mick & at least 2 of the other 4 bunkers need to be female, Mick's not gonna pull that stunt again on Amos & EJ, I was told that they're not going for it.

I have yet to attend, but I strongly suspect that most of the drugs are in peoples' little pill carriers with the days of the week on the little compartments so you don't forget, and are legally prescribed. And they include Viagra or competitive products, to make whatever sex happens possible.

Doo-wop, yes. Many of us were in high school in that genre's peak years.

Mary, there is LOTS more in the works, but it is all in a definitely preliminary stage right now. We will be meeting very soon to sketch out a list of possible workshops and talk about whom to invite as special guests (there is a much-too-long list of potential guests at this point). It sounds like we'll get a really good crowd (um, by that I mean quantity, not necessarily quality... heh, heh...) this year, so I predict a fantastically splendid weekend. Some of you cross-ponders, and others, might want to think about Carle and Andrew's lead and come over a week early. That way you can take in    The Portsmouth (NH) Maritine Folk Festival.

It's a beautiful time of year, hotel rooms are less dear, as is the price of lobster. We've assembled a crew of many of the finest maritime singers imaginable. And the festival is free.

See you in September - Tom

I'm guessing that anyone thinking of flying should commit and book flights now, as air fares are only going to go higher.

For those of us who have frequent flyer miles that we are not likely to use, do they have to be used by the person who accumulates them, or can that person use them to book a flight for some one else, if we were inclined to donate them so some one could attend the Getaway?

The actual rates for the Getaway should be fairly similar to last year's fee schedule, but the FSGW folks will be discussing and ratifying them in the next couple of weeks. I think we had decided to overhaul and re-do the registration form so that mere mortals who aren't on the inside clique can understand it enough to provide the information needed, and that might be in the works as well.

The 2008 registration forms should be posted on or about the beginning of the month of August, and we WILL put notice here on Mudcat when they're ready!

Anyone know about train stations that would help Marion?

01 Jul 08 - 10:57 PM (#2378787)
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008
From: Fortunato

Bill and Marion,

Washinton, Union Station is 36 miles from the camp, and Baltimore, Penn Stateion is 40 miles. So depending on where Marion is coming from either station will work about the same. Obviously she would pick the quicker or cheaper itinerary that got her to either station.

Amtrak home page

Now if she's renting a car then Hertz partners with Amtrak just search for rental cars on the Amtrak page, and they have your car waiting at the station.

Of course if she's riding with a friend then Union station connects to the Washington Metro.   The BWI (Baltimore/Washington International Amtrak station connects to the airport obviously and rental cars are available there as well.

Hope this helps.
Chance

Subject: RE: Getaway 2008
From: Charlie Baum

Getting to the Getaway via Amtrak--

Depending on where someone can pick her up, the train station to use might be BWI (the Baltimore-Washington Airport) or New Carrollton (where US 50 and the I-495 Capital Beltway cross). It's also possible that someone can pick her up at Union Station in downtown Washington, DC (within a couple blocks of the US Capitol) or at Penn Station in Baltimore. Many NorthEast Corridor trains stop at all of these stations.

If Marion gets a ride, many folks from the DC will be passing close to New Carrollton, while anyone flying in via Southwest Airlines will be at BWI.

Transport to West River from a train station involves either carpooling with another Getaway person or a very long taxi ride (though I suppose the airport shuttle van from BWI might also transport someone from the rail station).

Peg,

Mapquest says it is about 27 miles from Greenbelt, Maryland to West River, Maryland. Those are generalized locations so give or take ten miles I'd say.

If you can get to Greenbelt, someone should be able to get you to the Getaway. A great deal of music occurs in small groups in the evening and early morning hours. Commuting to and from is possible, but you will miss much.

Great, Peg. I'll PM you to swap addresses and phone numbers so we can set it up. Don't worry about paying for gas; one of the many nice things about our car is that it is a fuel-stingy diesel -- a full 50-litre tank is good for close to 1,200 km on the highway. Throw in a flop for the night (I'm fine on a sofa) and breakfast coming and going, and we'll be square.

From: Charlie Baum

At long last, the registration form for the 2008 Getaway is available for downloading. Print it out, fill it in, and send it back to Dean Clamons, the registrar at the address on the bottom of the form. We made the form two pages this year to make it a little more readable and hopefully, a little less confusing.

The Getaway is a weekend of music-making and socializing with folks from the local Washington, DC area and from all over the world. Note that it's earlier this year than the past couple of years—the first weekend of October—which may mean possibilities for gatherings outdoors.

We have 50 rooms with beds in heated (and air-conditioned) buildings. You'll need to bring bedding, pillows, and towels. We'll provide comfortable beds, with bathrooms and hot showers down the hall (with separate men's and women's facilities in every building). There are lots of bunk beds, and there's a discount if you'll accept an upper bunk.
You can even bring a tent or an RV (but no hook-ups available). Because the camp charges us, RV or tent campers can get no discount beyond what you'd get for taking an upper bunk.

Our public gathering areas and several of the bedroom buildings are handicapped accessible. If you can't handle an upper bunk, please let us know. We can also handle special dietary needs—let us know in advance. We even have a kitchen available to us 24/7 with refrigerator, freezer, and microwave, if you want an in-between meal snack.

There is NO SMOKING is allowed in any of the camp buildings. Because it's a facility run by the Methodist Church, we are asked not to bring any alcohol.

We have rates for one, two, or three nights, and one for day-trippers who don't want to eat. (You MUST register in advance if you wish to dine!) If you register for two nights, your registration fee covers three meals and a late-night snack both days on Saturday and Sunday. A three-night registration gives you an additional night's lodging and breakfast
on Monday morning. One-night registration gives you all meals and snacks on either Saturday or Sunday and, if you wish, a bed on either adjacent night.

Our rates have gone up a little this year because the camp's charges to us have gone up. If it's a problem, don't worry—the scholarship fund is healthy enough to ask for a price-break if you need it.

If you've registered on-liner at the FSGW website, you DO NO'T need to send in the form, unless you want to tell us about housing or diet preferences that you didn't do on-line. But the .pdf gives an optional way of registering to those who don't do electronic transactions, don't have a computer, or are just Luddites (like many of us).

There are tables to sell CDs and other stuff from. Usually, most people leave the stuff out all weekend with a box or envelope to put money in, or a note to find you and settle up.

While Canadian money is at parity with U.S. currency, folks in the U.S. look at it with great suspicion, while other countries will sometimes take US$.

Genie.. there 'are' a few folks who subscribe/become members JUST to deal with the Getaway, but some also like the news and profiles of different folks we have for concerts....or, if they travel this way often, to follow events and make plans. The newsletter is mostly a listing of the many, many events...song, dance, storytelling..etc., in the Greater DC area, so if you are not here often, the Getaway may not be enough reason to spend the membership $$ every year...besides, most important stuff is online for free at FSGW.org

09 Aug 08 - 04:34 PM (#2409483)
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 and FSGW membership
From: Genie

OK, apparently FSGW does not have a geezer discount (prob'ly 'cause we folkies're pretty near all gettin' to be geezers these days?).
A 1-year membership would be $33, which would knock $20 off the cost of the Getaway registration. Since I'm rarely in the DC area, the other $13 would be basically a donation to the cause. Not unthinkable, that.

Q: the FSGW page has an Out-of-town Subscriber rate of $25.   I guess that means "newsletter subscriber," but does that count as a membership for purposes of registering for the Getaway?

I did try to sign up and pay for the $25 Out Of Town Subscriber thing, but I couldn't get my credit card to go through, even though there's no reason I can figure out why it wouldn't. (My account info is correct, the account's open and solvent, and the card is one of the ones listed at the sight.   No idea why the transaction wouldn't go through, and I'm wondering if I could pay by credit card over the phone.)

I also tried to register for the Getaway online, and I filled out the form but that didn't go through either.

I can't print at the moment (printer SNAFU) and anyway I can't pay by credit card if I were to print the reg. form and mail it in.   Anyone know where/how I can actually register online and pay by credit card?

(PayPal may be messing me up. Long ago I opened an acoount and it was closed and apparently cannot be reopened by a mere mortal. It took me ages to get any info from the PayPal folks, because I'm wary of opening their emails because so many emails that claim to be from them are actually fraudulent - something PayPal has actually warned about - and email is the only way to contact them.   Aarrggh!   Finally they told me someone had tried to use my account fraudulently so they closed it, but I still can't figure out the hoops they want me to jump through to reopen it. And the catch-22 is that I can't open another account using my name, address, or email address. But when I tried to pay FSGW by credit card, I got a message that "You have a PayPal account," and a request to lof in -- which I obviously can't do.
That's why I'm hoping I can pay by credit card over the phone and leave Pay Pal out of the loop.)

Genie--

The newsletter only rate does not give you discounts on events, so it's not going to help you there. The newsletter DOES have a hardcopy form you can print out and mail in with a check, and if you give me your snail-mail address (by private message or emailing me at president (at) fsgw.org), I can snail-mail you a registration form.

No special geezer discount?--EVERYBODY gets the geezer discount.

Bill D is right--the membership gives you a newsletter and discounts on FSGW event, but unless you plan to stick around and go to concerts or dance while you're East, it won't give you a lot of monetary benefit, except a monthly newsletter to see what a folk society in the East can program. We have something like 250 events a year, and then we list everything else going on in our area, which will only make you jealous and want to move here, and put up with heat and high humidity just to take advantage of all the folkie things.

After the Getaway, you'd have to stick around until that Monday night to take advantage of a concert discount. And we have two concerts and a dance the weekend previous.

Thanks for the info, Charlie.

I really want to pay by credit card (for various reasons) if that's feasible, and I think I have to register online to do that. Any ideas on why a perfectly valid credit card (Discover or Visa) wouldn't go through at the FSGW website?

We ALL get the geezer discount? LOL

As for the newsletter, you may be right that it'd make me jealous. But the Pacific NW isn't exactly chopped liver when it comes to folk music and folk dance events, either. (You should come visit out here some day! You'd have to put up with more rainy days - but softer, lighter, and more episodic rain - but a LOT less snow and ice, less humidity, and more temperate summertime temperatures.) :D

Can't stick around till Monday night. Art B and Jen and I are carpooling it to NC on Monday , where I'll be visiting family. I do plan to make it to Fortunato's music thing (whatever it's called) on Thursday, the 2nd, though.

It's little known, but...

Originally in the early days they were called Parrot-Troopers and carried birds on their shoulders when they jumped. This experement only lasted a brief time, as the birds either abandoned the jumpers in mid-flight or else held on for dear life so hard that they had to be surgically removed after the jump, leaving stains on the uniforms and sizeable scars underneath. Also, when captured, the stool-parrots would blab anything they knew for tha price of a cracker or sexual companionship.

They changed over to carrier pigeons within the month and changed the spelling and the rest is Historectomy (History once-removed)....

Thanks,
Claire

It's shaping up for a Grande Systerehoode indeed--the most intense concentration of sheer pulchritude in one spot the East Coast has seen since Jackie roamed the White House.

Bobert...re: alkihoool...the Methodist camp will not like us if they see any evidence of it. We have managed 2 years there now, and they seem to have not found reason to DISlike us. We need to keep it that way.

(The Getaway has functioned like this for most of 40 years...Camp "Tumbleweed", for all its chilly nights and strangeness was the ONLY place we ever went where a Bluesman could be openly...ummm..

Best route, or alternate forms of transportation? Easiest way is to rent a car at the airport...it's a pretty easy drive from there. If anyone is coming FROM that area, or getting in about the same time, it could be even easier.

I have a ride to the Getaway, but not from, and I need to get to Dulles -- but I don't need to get there at any particular time, as I'm not flying out until Tuesday morning.

Can anyone get me close, or to a form of transportation (bus, car rental counter, train...) that can get me close?

I remember a very kind man telling me last year that he lived or worked near there and could be asked for rides, but I am sorry to say I cannot recall who that was. I hope he reads this!

I have a little something planned for Mick but I need a baby to pull it off.

Barry has not been a good boy so he may be in for some abuse - we'll see.

Mostly we just got over John Roberts. The Portsmouth Festival is coming up. Andrew and Carole are staying here and Micca later. So I am spending an inordinate amount of time laundering sheets and airing sleeping bags. Then we come back to a Cindy Kallet concert followed by Gordon Bok, both requiring more than the usual prep time.

In short, life is good and filled with music.

Somewhere around here I have feathers but they are probably turkey or chicken, hardly the tools of a temptress. Can I bring my whale tambourine?

I will be driving south from Ottawa, leaving on Thursday 2 October and arriving at West River on Friday 3 October. Marion from Toronto is coming with me; she will take the train from Toronto to Ottawa on Wednesday. Unfortunately, Peg in Albany will not be joining us -- work got in the way.

I would love to be able to make the Shivers' sing on Thursday night, but leaving Ottawa before Thursday morning is just not possible this year. Marion has accepted the onerous job of minding the map, and we will flop in some cheap (but not nasty) motel near the highway.

I've never been to a Getaway without Edmund before. It's going to be strange ...

Thanks for the offer, SINS, but Maine is very far off the track from Ottawa to Maryland.

We'll be coming straight down Interstate 81 from the Ivy Lea Bridge all the way to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where we will get on Interstate 83 to head for the Beltway. If you run the route on Google Maps, you'll see that Harrisburg is almost due south from Ottawa, and the I-81 through New York and Pennsylvania is the straightest possible run on that bearing.

By the time we get to the Getaway, we will be thoroughly tired of travelling, I betcha.

Just for easy reference:

"There's many a strange impulse out on the plains of West Texas;
There's many a young boy who feels things he don't comprehend.
Well small town don't like it when somebody falls between sexes,
No, small town don't like it when a cowboy has feelings for men.

Well I believe in my soul that inside every man there's a feminine,
And inside every lady there's a deep manly voice loud and clear.
Well, a cowboy may brag about things that he does with his women,
But the ones who brag loudest are the ones that are most likely queer.

Cowboys are frequently secretly fond of each other
What did you think those saddles and boots was about?
There's many a cowboy who don't understand the way that he feels towards his brother,
Inside every cowboy there's a lady who'd love to slip out.

Ten men for each woman was the rule way back when on the prairie,
And somehow those cowboys must have kept themselves warm late at night.
Cowboys are famous for getting riled up about fairies,
But I'll tell you the reason a big strong man gets so uptight:

Cowboys are frequently secretly fond of each other --
That's why they wear leather, and Levi's and belts buckled tight.
There's many a cowboy who don't understand the way that he feels towards his brother;
There's many a cowboy who's more like a lady at night..

Well there's always somebody who says what the others just whisper,
And mostly that someone's the first one to get shot down dead:
When you talk to a cowboy don't treat him like he was a sister
Don't mess with the lady that's sleepin' in each cowboy's head.

Cowboys are frequently secretly fond of each other
Even though they take speed and drive pickups and shoot their big guns;
There's many a cowboy who don't understand the way that he feels towards his brother;
There's many a cowboy who keeps quiet about things he's done.

I must go off to the Getaway,
By the distant West River shore.
I am called by the call of a thousand souls
The guitar, and the banjo's roar,
For the Getaway's cal is a pure, high call,
As clear as the smell of a skunk,
To spend three days in the Muses' ways,
Picking, and singing, and drunk.

And the songs they sing are the fine old songs
From when songs were writ in the soul.
Long before the days of rap, or punk,
And the crash of rock and roll.
When a man could sing to the stars on high,
His guitar as his only aid,
And folks would nod, and smile and hum
Knowing every song he played.

No, I must go back to the Getaway,
And the Getaway songsters true,
And all I ask is six sound strings
And a fifth for to see me through.
For the hugs of friends, and the jamming hours
Make a bond, which you may not free,
Until I return to the Western shore
And put out again to sea.

All his supervisors, spouses, significant others, and local constabulary have tried for years to get him to behave and get back in the box, but he just slips out the other side.

Looks like a 10 hour drive for me. So I doubt if I'll get there before 7 pm.

So I've got all of tomorrow to print my driving charts, pick my on-the-road CD's, pack the van, and make sure the cat-sitter can find all the essentials.

Barry-

Here are some interesting lyrics (that I just cribbed from somewhere) to review for your re-enactment:

Cleopatra did ten
thousand in her Iifetime
now what a wide mouth
Cleopatra gave a service with a smile
she was a wide mouthed girl
a wide mouthed girl

Cleopatra did a hundred Roman
Centurions

for after dinner mints
Cleopatra used a suction
oh so unheard of
she was a wide mouthed girl
a wide mouthed girl (believe it)

show me a bigger mouth
show me a bigger mouth
show me a bigger mouth
show me a bigger mouth
what a weak distorted image
Elizabeth and Richard
gave you the screen
of the wide mouthed girl
wide mouthed girl.

You'll have to come up with your own tune.

Can you do that Egyptian dance, with the waving arms, hieroglyphic style?

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Could'a sworn I posted this earlier today, but a black hole seems to have swallowed it up.

I got into DC last night and am staying at Severn's house but didn't get much sleep (some very friendly, enthusiastic other house guests with apparently less need for zzz's than I have). Severn and I will be at Fortunato's singaround tonight.   I have no guitar with me, so DK if I'll be able to do much more than listen, or sing along on chorus songs, but it'll be great to meet some folks in person whom I've only "known" online, as well as some new ones.

I am still hoping maybe some of the local Mudcatters might bring an extra thin-necked guitar to the Getaway, that they might be willing to lend for a workshop or two.   I'm not any good with classical or other wide-necked guitars or heavy gauge strings.   At home I play a Martin 00018 and a couple others (e.g., an Alvarez and a Sigma) of similar size and shape), with extra lights.    I've heard that sometimes at the Getaway there are people who bring extra guitars for out-of-towners to use.   Big Mick has told me he's bringing the Baby Taylor, and I think I can play that one OK, but I don't know how its neck and action compare to the 00018.

I want to extend special thanks to whoever ordered today's DC-area weather.   It's a beaut!

Genie, I'll be bringing my Martin 000-18 (with light-gauge strings), and you're welcome to use it. It's not an "extra" guitar, being the only one I have, but I usually don't play it very much. Let's touch base Friday night and you can let me know when you'd like to use it.

Glad you liked today's weather -- the forecast gets even better for the weekend!

See y'all tomorrow night!

Blessings on the Getaway

We send to you all journeys of delight,
Diverting companions to sweeten the days,
And music seeping, flowing, rushing,
Enough to fill the deep well of joy in each heart
Enough to lighten the darkest despair
Music to brighten the stars overhead
Music to comfort those who fain would be with you,
Yet are not.

I posted a reply to Charley, Nancy, Bruce, Gary and others earlier this morning. This is about the 4th time in a week that posts I've made have vanished into some sort of cyber black hole. Weird.

Anyway, without bothering to repost it all, I'll just say thanks to those of you who are bringing spares or willing to share your various axes.    I'm sure I'm not the only one who'll need to borrow some strings or a concertina.

Really looking forward to tonight. We should be getting there in a few hours.

So tomorrow morning I'll be off to the Getaway for the one day that I have...

Won't be the same not having KT to fire from the band... Sniff...

Oh yeah, thanks fir reminding me, I need to round up some feathers in case any of the large bottomed womens insist on being in the band...

That wouldn't ba good thing seein' as the P-Vine's favorite hobby is stompin' on me and if I come home with little left to stomp she might start lookin' 'round for someone with somthin' left to stomp...

Guess that's what makes me a bluesman???
