THE Mudcat Song (Come and write a verse!!)

29 Apr 99 - 03:40 PM (#74361)
Subject: THE Mudcat Song (Come and write a verse!!)
From: Sam Pirt

OK Mudcatters now I'm really testing you out!! I've had an idea (Oh No, brase yourselfs!!) I seem to have picked up from the threads that Mudcat needs a song, correct? I thought so. So heres where my idea fits in. Below I have written a Chorus but You, thats right, yop have to write the Verses. Not only will we end up with the longest song in history written by the most people (record breakers may show an interest here) but the song will trully be the mudcatters song as it will have been written by Mudcatters after all!!

Heres the chorus: -

Listening, reading, thinking and writing
All about a world thats all mixed up
Believing, retrieving, conceiving and weaving
Positive messages for people that look

Have a go write a verse!!!

Cheers

Bye, Sam

We're great when we're retrieving
But we're only half believing
.. what anybody said.
and there's none of us that's grieving
and our thoughts are so relieving
'cos there's none of us conceiving
.. Since Art Thieme's condom thread

And how many times must he miss an ending tag,

Doch vorher möcht' ich noch lesen
noch einen und noch einen thread.

Let me tell ya'll a story 'bout an internet site,
A place to go to sit 'n read 'n write
A place where you can spend a lot of time, you'll see
Surrounded by a lot of cyber-family,
Mudcatters, Fine Folks, ya'll come back now, hear?

For those poor souls amongst us lacking in the finer side of culture, the preceding is to the tune of "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" ala Flatt & Scruggs

It was late, it was early,
The midnight oil was low.
I fired up the pewter
And decided where to go
To the Mudcat, hie! Away I go!
To the Mudcat, Hie! Away!

To friends afar and friends anear
Good phoakies all are they.
The threads they weave
Are of a fabric blest; say,
To the Mudcat, hie! Away I go!
To the Mudcat, Hie! Away!

Argghhhh! Oh, well, as the Tuckered Mudder says, it's early and I am not 'xaclee focus'd.

Wolfie: are you gonna make me get out my German dictionary? I kind of got the gist, I think, but my high school German is rusty. It sounds good, but maybe a translation would help for those of us who fail miserably and embarassingly at being bilingual?:-)Danke.

Thanks, this is fun.

kat,
isn't it just fun to sing in a foreign language without understanding everything?

O.K., here's the translation:

the first line just gives away the tune and I won't translate it. Then:
I just hum along silently
the bookmark for mudcat, my shortcut
won't leave my mind evermore.
I know I long should be sleeping
long ago should have gone to my bed,
but before that I'm longing for reading one more thread one more thread, one more thread.

Subject: RE: THE Mudcat Song (Come and write a verse!!)
From: MudGuard

Here is my own attempt.
It does not fit any melody I know, but perhaps someone will add that to our song as well as additional verses...

Without my Mudcat I am sure I would be dead,
I can stay there in the morning and very late,
There is music, there is fun, there is chat,
And for the lyrics there is the DigiTrad
And all the people loving tradition
Who are here for their addiction
Who can't live without a good talk
Over the internet to speak folk

An attempt to translate Wolfgangs verse:

I don't know what it should mean
I am quietly humming just for me
The bookmark for my Mudcat, my shortcut
Will not get out of my mind
I know I should sleep now
I should be in bed for a long time
But before, I want to read
One more and one more thread.

With harmony and dissonance the 'Catters weave their threads, They weave with song, they weave with thoughts, the loom is the internet. The fabric they weave is strong and warm, and is worn all 'round the earth. All are welcome to sit at the loom and add their own colors, their own brand of mirth.

Well I jumped on the Mudcat late last night,

Just to catch up with my friends,

Lord have mercy, what a wonderful site!

There were threads there without end!

(there was)Kosovo, Hank Snow, Sweet home Chicago, another one bout John Prine

(there was) Mudstock, Gordon Bok, Lonely Hearts and Wedlock, Place Names and Wild Mountain Thyme

I had to read every thread fom A to Zed

Some were serious and some were just a joke.

But every body was there, just a-lettin down their hair,

Those Free-thinkin' Mudcattin' Phoak!

(there was) Liam's Bro, vixen, Mo, Catspaw and Bruce O., Nightowl and Animaterra

(there was) Allan C, Andy G, Banjeray and bbc, Doctor John, Dai and Cara

Now I sometimes dream how easy it would seem

If the whole world could act this way-

We could all get along with a smile and a song

Like the Catters at The Mudcat Cafe!

(like)Wolf Hell, Kat and Rick, Joe Offer, Big Mick and don't forget ol Swamp Dweller Frank,

Harpgirl, Sam Pirt, Art Theime, Max n Bert, Sandy, Lion, Roger and Hank!

To the tune of The Shanty Song:

I read the threads in the morning,
I read the threads at night
As long as I got my Mudcat, Mama
I know everything's alright
Cause we gonna lay around the computer, Mama,
And get a 'Cat buzz on

Scrolling through postings, Mama
Do it night and day
Learning from phoaks around the world
Making phriends the Mudcat way,
We gonna lay around the Cafe, Mama
And get a 'Cat buzz on.

There's Max to thank, and Susan,
tell it to Dick, too
They created this thing called Mudcat
As a gift to me and you
We gonna hang out in the Cafe, mama
And get a 'Cat buzz on.

Damn, but that is bad, but I did it in about 30 seconds. I will add more later.

I love it, Alice!!! I just sang it to the tune of Gutherie's "Buffalo Skinners". Let's add some more.

It was in the town of Mudcat
in the year of '98
A friend sends me an e-mail,
says try this site its great
That was the beginning
I post here night and day
'Cuz I am hopelessly addicted
To the old Mudcat Cafe.

We've talked at length about lyrics
Musical history, too.
Reg and Paw and Cletus,
They're all part of the glue
That binds us all together,
In a most pleasurable way
In the nooks and crannies and alleys,
Of the old Mudcat Cafe

So if you need an answer,
or want to express your point of view,
Type in www.mudcat is all you have to do
To find the greatest people,
And hear what they have to say
And spend some time pleasant,
At the old Mudcat Cafe.

For those of you not familiar with THE ROCKS OF BAWN, the lyrics in the DT are here.
The first verse of the DT version is a little different than the Clancy's version that I learned. There are many versions of the song. Here's the first verse as in the Clancy's songbook.

Come all you loyal heroes,
Wherever that you be,
And don't hire with any master,
'til you know what your work will be.
For you must rise up early,
From the clear day light of dawn,
And I know that you'll never be able,
To plow the Rocks of Bawn.

From: Alice

Sam, I apologize that I'm not holding to the chorus/song you started this with, but The Rocks Of Bawn has been going through my head recently, so that is the tune that I'll continue with.
more verses

My vocal cords may wear out,
My voice, it may get thin,
And my lips, they are a tremblin',
For the shape that Catspaw's in.
But our voices rise up early,
In the clear day light of dawn,
And I know that we're all able,
To pray while he is gone.

Well, rise up all you Mudcats,
And sing to break of day,
Don't sink into the deep despair,
Of gloom and clouds of grey,
Whatever this old world may bring,
You know your friends are there,
Cause all around the world,
Mudcatters join in prayer.

And Catspaw, he'll again return,
He's here in every thread,
For if you do a forum search,
You'll find old things you've read,
That made you wince or laugh and smile,
The way he only can,
And we know that when he's back here,
Cat **** will hit the fan.

So, blessings on all Mudcats,
And be they near or far,
We sit by cyber firesides,
And drink another jar.
By flickering lights of monitors,
We slide the silent mouse,
And I know that wherever we're living,
It feels like one big house.

A heart is full, a heart is strong It beats as one For all who come; Are welcome just to sit a spell Or carry on.

The porch is full, the voices strong Blending until done For all who come; Open minds and hearts, weaving in Or carrying on.

The space is full, exists in air alone End of day won For all who come; Open minds and hearts, letting in Or carrying on.

I've a tune for it in me head, but no abc, yet, sorry! A sweet surcease, a answer one or two For carrying on.

Here are a couple of songs I wrote last year when we were suffering with a series of weekend Mudcat crashes:

MISSIN' THE MUDCAT BLUES

I got the blues 'cause the Mudcat's gone and crashed again;
My God it hurts, the Mudcat's crashed again--
Good golly Miss Molly, when will them crashes end?

I gotta have the 'cat, 'cause I got a lotta stuff to say;
Oh, I need them threads 'cause I got so much to say.
But Benjamin and Barry Finn and all the threads have gone away.

I need Barbara and Art, I need Alison and Mick,
With only silence from the swamps, I know I'm gettin' sick,
Tim and Chet and Northfolk, you're gone but what can I do?
I'd ask Joe Offer, but dammit, he's gone, too.

With no Harpgirl and no Raven I'm stuck all alone in lonesome hell;
Bill's in Alabama, and there's no Wolfgang here in hell,
Roger, Pete, and Ewan, Mike and Murray, they're all gone as well.

There's no word out of Brisbane, and Vancouver's quiet, too;
There's no word out of Brisbane, and Vancouver's quiet, too.
Max,. you gotta get me back on line, 'cause what else am I gonna do?

(the four verse line is sung to the same twelve bars, a la "Long Line Skinner.")

Missing the mudcat on the banks of the ohio.

I met my Baby on a thread;
Our souls are one, that's what she said.
She said she'd always be with me,
But the Mudcat's down--where can she be?

(Cho.)
Max, only say you'll bring 'em back:
Without the threads, what good's my Mac?
Each time a weekend rolls around,
I'm all alone 'cause the threads are down.

We always met, my Baby and me,
At the topmost thread just after three.
We'd play thread-tag 'til time for bed,
But not tonight, 'cause the threads are dead.

It's Saturday night, and I'm alone,
All I can do is weep and moan,
All I can do is cry them blues,
My Baby's gone, nuthin' left to lose.

a few more verses! i took a break from revision to scrawl a line or two and ended up with several! here goes...

In a intricate world a pattern unfurls They are bound by the love of a song And the soft, gentle beat or the rich strong heat Of the words that keep them strong.

Free of image that hides the sweetness of minds The ballard of life is shown. Though the friend is unseen the friendship is keen And harmony world wide is grown.

The quick beat of the past and the world deep and vast Encompassed in voices of those Who send each thread of light to a small screen so bright And each life fills with songs as it grows.

needs a bit more work but my chemistry revision books are calling to me...

Don't worry too much about your results, you will always have songwriting to fall back on. Forget the chemistry, stick to poetry..............................Nice one.

This is good,
But I think we should,
Offer a thought for poor old Joe.
Where will he begin?
To put the line-breaks in?
Or will he just let it go?

And, here I was feeling SO smart for figuring out that it takes an AMPERSAND (&) followed by the A followed by the word acute, to get that capital A for your name with the acute diacritical mark over it! Guess I'll just have to go bakc to calling you "Womon!" **BG**

Gather up the books and the old Lp's
the Cd's and tapes, and the old bodhran
run like the devil from the copyright man
Keep the threads from flaming Max please

Oh the copyrightmen are on their way
they're hunting the forum for songs they say
oh they won't go away till the copyright's payed
By the folkies at the Mudcat Tavern

Old Irish The hills of Connemara

With apologies to the national anthem of the U.S.A.) Oh hey can you see by the dawns early light hunched ov-er her P.C. she is surfing like crazy But her one true delight is the Mudcat Cafe But she's up half the night So next day she's real lazy

She's not cooked for a week And the prospects are bleak That housework will get done Till the next millenium

So let's hear a cheer for the Mudcat Cafe She'll be loyal and true Till they cart her away!!!

(Will somebody please point me to the thread that shows me how totab properly!)

Dear Little Dorrit,

All you have to do is type the letters br inbetween two brackets <> at the end of each line and your verses will look like they should.

to the tune of "How Can I Keep From Singing"

My life flows on in endless song
Of possum's lamentation
I hear the real, though far off thread
That hails a new creation
Through all the tumalt and the strife
I hear that music ringing
It sounds an echo in my soul
How can I keep from posting?

What though the gargoyle loudly roars
I hear the truth it liveth
What though the tavern round me close
Songs in the night it giveth
No Reg can shake my inmost calm
While to Dave and Mbo I'm clinging
Since Max is Lord of heaven on earth When profiteers tremble sick with fear
As they hear bells of freedom
When friends rejoice both far and near
How can I help but join them
In Neil Young Centers and Insanevacs vile
Our thoughts to them are winging
When friends by name are undefiled
How can I keep from posting?

I lift my eyes the computer fades
I see the blue above it
And day by day this website grows
Since first I learned to love it
The peace of kat restores my soul
A fountain ever springing
All threads are mine since I am loved
How can I keep from posting?

Yes...I'd like to thank the academy for recognizing true genius when they see it. And since I have no one else to thank for this but myself, I'll bid you all good night. Luv, Elle (she of tongue firm in cheek)

When you think that you are forgotten,

And the world around seems pretty rotten.

You post a message and all that matters,

Is the good feeling you get from the Mudcatters.

stretching it a bit I know but hey it gets the feeling out, doesn't it?

about those odd characters and foreign letters...on a PC..(not on a MAC) all you have to do is hold down the 'alt' key while typing numeric combination..

thus 'alt 0131' = ƒ, and 'alt 0223' = ß, and 'alt 0176' = °

somewhere in the Windows bowels is the 'character map' which has the complete list..(I have several font listing programs which find 'em for me)

MAC can do something similar, but I don't know exactly how

BillD, thanks, but somehow it got flushed from the bowels of my Windows program. I went looking months ago and was informed it wasn't there!

kat..thanks for the heads up!maybe THAT's why I couldn't find it! Wonder why they would eliminate that? the characters are still there...The real answer is to get yourself a Font viewing/editing program which has the character map built in....(I'll post several if there is any interest... I like being able to do ¼, ½, ¾ and €,@,Æ,ç, directly from the keyboard!)

Yes, please do, I was able to find the codes to a few important ones, such as ©; for it to work, I have to be sure to have my number lock down. should we move this to another thread? Thanks, Bill

I'll post it here, and start a thread also

I am using ICFont Lite...free(fancy version also available)(also MAC version!)

and The Font Thing (there are several more on that page and also on this page at "NoNags"

each is a little different...try 'em! If you need to use a LOT of different fonts, "The Font Thing" will alow you to show several fonts side by side for comparison.

Okay, here goes:

Did you ever hear tell of the Mudcat Cafe,
Where all the cool people share songs that they play?
They all may be crazy, they all may be broke,
But they're ever so knowing when it comes to "folk".

(to the tune of "Sweet Betsy From Pike", even if it isn't very offensive or ribald)

Sometimes one feels like a lion tamer
When trying to moderate anonymous guest flamers
But in this cyber room there's much love
With members of the folk community and members of the...
...Dead beat club!

Mudcat, baby Mudcat!

Sorry, got off on a B52s moment there.
