Songs with numbers in titles

18 Nov 07 - 08:21 PM (#2197127)
Subject: Songs with numbers in titles
From: Nigel Parsons

Okay!
I'm looking for songs with numbers in the titles.
A couple of pointers, I'm looking paticularly for folk/traditional songs, or for christmas songs (particularly traditional)
As a fall-back, I will take more modern songs often heard at 'Acoustic Nights'
I want to build up from songs with 'two' in the title ('One' doesn't appear as often because song titles ust 'A', or 'The' instead)
While it is reasonable to jump ahead and give a song title with (say) seven in the title while we are still looking for 'five' & 'six' it is pointless to jump ahead to 'In the year 2525' if there's no chance of ever filling the gaps between.
Any assistance please?

2, Two Little Boys, The Twa Corbies...
3, Past 3 a clock (Christmas), We Three Kings (Christmas), Three Steps to Heaven....

The first song with numbers in its title that popped into my mind was Wilson Pickett's "Land of a 1000 dances" but then I read your entire post and realized that this song wouldn't meet your criteria. But it seems as though that song wants to be noted anyway, so I'm including it in this post, if not on your actual list.

Well I guess I didn't read your initial post thatwell 'cause you already had "We Three Kings" listed.

As a means of redeeming myself, here's a song with one in its title though it also may not fit your stated criteria:

ONE IS THE MAGIC NUMBER
{Jill Scott}

No hay nadie mas que yo,
Uno es el numero magico
En vida y en muerte,
Uno es todo
Comprende
If I multiply 2 times 2 is it really, really 4 me
La [x6]
And if I add 5 to get 9 minus 8 that just leaves me
Me [x8]
So many times I define my pride
Through somebody else's eyes (La da da, la da)
Then I looked inside and found my own stride,
I found the lasting love for me
If I'm searching for my spirituality
Passionately I must begin with me

There's just me...
One is the magic number [x2]

If I add myself unto myself multiplied times
You and yours and you again
There's just me
And if I divide 8 billion, 48 trillion, 98 zillion
There is, there is just me
If I subtract one plus me to the 5th degree,
Use any theorem
There's just me

There's just me...
One is the magic number [x2]

Me, me, me, me...
[Ad lib to end]

If you have a downloaded copy of the DT, you can use the title search for each number, both spelled out and numeric. Tedious, but it will work. The online search does not distinguish between titles and the rest of the lyrics.

This is slight thread drift, but does anyone have verses for the 'counting backwards' song 'wheel of fortune' as sung (a long time ago) by Arty Trezise and Cilla Fisher? I think they got it from Pete Shepheard who may have got it from Archie Webster.

"The twelve robbers" (Zhilo Dvenadsat Razboinikov) is actually an old Russian song, usually sung in Russian, though you may be thinking of a German translation I'm unaware of. It's a traditional Russian setting of a poem by Nikolai Alekseevich Nekrasov (1821-1878).

Subject: RE: Songs with numbers in titles (PHONE NUMBERS !)
From: GUEST,Veejay on the West Coast

I vividly recall two "soul/Motown" hits from the early 1960s that share a unique coincidence:

"The Marvelettes" (Motown girl group) recorded "Beechwood 4-5789" in 1962.

Coincidentally, another soul singer, Wilson Pickett (Atlantic Record Label), recorded a similar song that also featured a "telephone number" as both the title and the theme of the song: Wilson Pickett's hit was titled "634-5789"

The Marvelettes lyric sample..."and my number is Beechwood 4-5789, you can call me up and have a date...any old time."

Wilson Pickett lyric sample...Oh I'll be right here at home.
All you gotta do is pick up the telephone and dial now
(Chorus):
6-3-4-5-7-8-9 (that's my number!)
6-3-4-5-7-8-9

Years later, in 1986, Tina Turner also recorded "634-5789" which by the way, was written by Steve Cropper and Eddie Floyd.

I feel a bit foolish now on two counts;
1. After reading through the thread, I'd forgotten that the original request was for traditional songs and/or Christmas songs.
2. I somehow failed to notice that thread was started eight years ago.

My apologies.

The klezmer tune "Zibn Fertsik" ("7:40", the departure time of a train used by Jewish workers in Odessa; the rhythm of the tune is like a steam engine starting up).

To add further Jack's interesting contrib: "Zibn Fertsik"

זיבן פערציק

is Yiddish, which is a language mixed of [mainly] German, with a bit of Polish & Hebrew, written in Hebrew letters but with an entirely different vowel system from Hebrew. The phrase would therefore derive from German Sieben-Verzig. It is one of my great regrets [sorry to drift] that I can't really speak Yiddish, tho with some knowledge of both Hebrew & German I can read it up to a point.. My grandfather, who founded London's only Yiddish daily newspaper which ran from 1900s to 1950s, & my father who succeeded him as editor, were two of England's leading Yiddishists, but unfortunately my mother didn't know it so it was not spoken at home.

Apologies again for drift...
