Subject: New Lost City Ramblers
From: GUEST,Suzy Thompson

Hi folks,
For possible inclusion in an upcoming documentary film about the New Lost City Ramblers being made by Chris Strachwitz (Arhoolie Foundation) and Yasha Aginsky, I am looking for any photos or film footage of the Ramblers. Especially anything from 50's, 60s or 70s. Any leads will be very much appreciated!
You can contact me via email at: suzy(AT)ericandsuzy.com

Thanks,
Suzy Thompson

Suzy:

Art Thieme, who comes this way fairly regularly, might be able to help you -- he has many phtoos from those decades in the folk music field.

I'll drop him a message to draw this thread to his attention.

Just substitute the "at" sign for (AT). Looking forward to hearing from you -- and if you have any photos of the early Yale hoots, that would be fantastic!!

I do hope that Tom Paley will be featured...
I hosted him in concert and helped him book
a tour last year...just about the time that
the other Ramblers were celebrating a revival
at the old time fest. It was unfortunate that
he was not included in the hoopla and fanfare!

He has lots of photos, too, as he is a photographer.
Why not contact him at 101320.1307 at compuserve dot com
to direct questions directly to him?

thanks for doing this and good luck on the book.

Suzy,

All the best with your documentary! No group ever did MORE to create an awareness of Old-Timey music. They made people want to get involved and play the music for themselves. I've been a fan of theirs ever since I first saw Mike and Tom and John open the show for Bob Gibson at Chicago's GATE OF HORN folk nightclub in 1959!!

Check out my photos of Tom, solo, --- and the trio with Tracy at:

When asked for a "user name" and a "password", put in the lower case word mudcat. That will get you in.

Suzy,

The New Lost City Ramblers were on Pete Seeger's t.v. show "The Rainbow Quest." The series ran in the 1960's. I have an old vhs copy of the show. The information given on the box is Advertisers' Broadcasting Co.
Rainbow Quest Trust, Central Sun Video, Box 3135, Reston, VA 22091. The number on the box said #A 110.

Hope this helps.

I recall seeing the Ramblers at the old Ash Grove, in Los Angeles, in the early 1960's. They were appearing with Sam Hinton, among others. That night, the MC introduced a "new and up-and-coming young folk singer" named Jackie DeShannon. I don't recall anything remotely "folk" about her, but she was cute, at least. There was filming being done that evening, so it is possible some archival footage still exists.

Wow - what an amazing response! Keep those pix and suggestions coming, folks! The photos are just wonderful. We already have the Rainbow Quest show, and are looking for any more film of the Ramblers that we can find. I am not the director of this film, just a lowly Associate Producer (which my friend who works in the film industry in L.A. tells me is a nonexistent title!) so I although I have input, I'm not making decisions about what goes in or not -- that's a collaborative effort in which the producer (Chris Strachwitz), director (Yasha Aginsky), Mike, John, and Tracy are all involved. Tom Paley definitely is in the film -- there is an amazing bit of film of Tom, John and Mike from (I think) 1958 -- but since he was a Rambler for about 5 years and Tracy has been a Rambler for the past 45 years, the main focus is on the "new" version of the Ramblers with Tracy.

Again, many thanks to all who have made suggestions or sent photos and if anyone else out there has either of these things, please send! You can contact me directly via email if you like: suzy(AT)ericandsuzy.com

Subject: Ash Grove NLCR poster/flyer??
From: Suzy T.

Hi folks, I'm looking for a copy of an Ash Grove poster (it may be flyer size) from the New Lost City Ramblers first gig there -- 3 weeks! I am not sure of the year, but the dates on the poster say Apr. 10-29. I would like to get a very high res scan of this poster, for use in the film that Chris Strachwitz and Yasha Aginsky are making -- a documentary about the New Lost City Ramblers. Yes, Tom Paley is in the film along with Mike, John and Tracy. I did have a lead on this poster (from a Mudcatter) but they cannot now find their copy of the poster, so I am searching again. If you have this, or have any leads, please send me a message, or email me off-list (suzyATericandsuzy.com)

Thanks very much to all those who have responded to my other queries, and especially to those who urged me to make sure that Tom Paley would be in the film.   I have gotten to talk to and correspond with some really wonderful folks in the course of this adventure, including people who were only legendary names out of the distant past (from reading old copies of Sing Out and Little Sandy Review). And of course it is inspiring to be working with the Ramblers!

I have photographs of Tom Paley and John Cohen at a party/picking session in London in the eighties in london, also photographs taken in London of John, Tracy, Mike AND Tom about 5 years ago but not good quality. The concert however was video taped. Have you knowledge of this?

I don't have your e-mail address.

I can't make it to the concert tomorrow but I am planning to go to the one on Oct. 8 and will definitely talk with Tom there. We did get a very good interview with him which was done at his home in London, part of which is in the film. Thanks so much for your help!

I had the good fortune to see the Ramblers at the Ash Grove in the early 1960's. I'm sure that Mike Seeger must have already made a contribution to this cause. On the same bill were Jackie DeShannon (masquerading as a new folk artist) and Sam Hinton, among others. I don't know if Sam's family has any such memorabilia. He lived near us for years, but moved to "retirement quarters" a year or two ago. Is anyone associated with the ownership or management of the Ash Grove still alive and kicking? Who knows? Tom Waits might even be able to help.

Thanks TJ for the suggestions -- Mike, Tracy and John are all actively involved in the making of this documentary film, and Tom Paley has been filmed and interviewed. I've been in touch with various Ash Grove folks (both people who were involved with running the club "back in the day" and others who were just hanging out). Sam Hinton actually is living in Berkeley (where I am located) and I will contact his family -- he occasionally comes out to various music events which is wonderful to see.

The Ramblers were regulars at the Brandywine Montain Music Convention, which had a 20-year run back in the 70s, 80s and early 90s. The Brandywine Friends of Old Time Music still exists and will have photos, recordings, and other stuff from the programs. Start here.

Suzy T:

I hope the information produces some help. I am very anxious to see the eventual product. Sam was a local treasure here in San Diego - a renaissance man in the best sense of the phrase. We were sorry to lose him, but I know my cousin who works for UC will benefit.
