Joe was a marvellous bloke, a mighty singer, and a great friend to me and to an awful lot of other people, and he was one of the most warm hearted characters I have ever met. This is a unique opportunity to remember Joe as he would surely have wanted to be remembered, and to raise a substantial sum of money for a cause of which he would have whole heartedly approved. |

03 Jan 08 - 07:44 AM (#2227324) Subject: RE: Joe Kerins Memorial Day From: GUEST,The black belt caterpillar wrestler I followed through the link on the first posting and had a look at the programme of events. It shows the 16th Feb as being a fund raiser OK, but says it is free admission. Perhaps someone should contact them or there will be some surprised people about when they are asked to pay for admission. |

07 Jan 08 - 09:58 AM (#2230298) Subject: RE: Joe Kerins Memorial Day From: Vin2 Only recently heard of the sad passing of Joe. Didn't know him personally but saw him many times over the years singing his ballads and songs from Ireland. Very friendly to talk to. RIP Joe. Hope to make the memorial gig at the Irish Centre. |
08 Jan 08 - 11:57 AM (#2231199) Subject: RE: Joe Kerins Memorial Day From: Fred McCormick Noreen "The website also doesn't mention that the fundraiser is in memory of Joe Kerins" They've fixed the problem over the stated admission fee, but the site still doesn't say anything about Joe. However, the Centre has been extremely good to us over this do, so I don't feel inclined to go bothering them again. Just take it that's the event for Joe. |

It's a nice gesture and a measure of how highly Joe was thought of. And of course it all helps to swell the coffers of the British Heart Foundation. All the best, Fred. |

17 Feb 08 - 06:21 AM (#2264416) Subject: RE: Joe Kerins Memorial Day From: Fred McCormick Well, we didn't get the numbers we were expecting. Turned out the Irish Centre hadn't sold their entire allocation after all. They merely thought they had. Even so a grand time was had by all. The centre laid on an excellent buffet, there was some superb singing. The musicians gave stirling support to the dancers. There were many fond reminiscences of Joe. And Scowie and Geoff did a great job of running the day, as did Joe's grandchildren in looking after the raffle. Most important of all, once the meal was paid for, we were left with five hundred quid for the British heart Foundation. Many thanks to all who took part. I think Joe would have approved. |
17 Feb 08 - 08:59 AM (#2264463) Subject: RE: Joe Kerins Memorial Day From: Fred McCormick A quick correction to the above. The five hundred pounds surplus was the figure I was given last night, and represented the approximate difference between the door take and what we were left with after the meal had been paid for. In fact, we also had the take for the raffle, plus money raised from the sale of some of Joe's books, plus several donations. After the cost of the meal has been deducted, and the cost of printing the tickets, we have eight hundred and seventy six pounds and forty four pence to pass on to the BHF. I feel quite delighted with my little self, and with everyone else who was there. |
17 Feb 08 - 11:17 AM (#2264545) Subject: RE: Joe Kerins Memorial Day From: treaties1 A fitting tribute to Joe it was a great occasion and a superb fundraiser. Congratulations and many thanks for the great organisation, Fred and Scowie, and volunteers that all helped to make it such a special event. Theresa |
17 Feb 08 - 04:10 PM (#2264784) Subject: RE: Joe Kerins Memorial Day From: John Routledge Thanks for the update Fred. A great contribution indeed. Joe's family took great comfort and pleasure from meeting some of the many people who knew Joe outside his "Family" life. I will remember the night as a very fond farewell. |
17 Feb 08 - 05:40 PM (#2264858) Subject: RE: Joe Kerins Memorial Day From: Noreen Joe would have loved it all. We started with a singaround interspersed with happy memories of Joe from his various 'homes', including the Jolly Angler, the Unicorn, Dungworth, the National Folk Festival and Limbrick. It took over three hours to get once round the room, with some wonderful stories and singing. A splendid Irish Stew (accomanied by some very good Guinness from the bar)was followed by a few dances called by Geoff and played for by a VERY scratch band- which sounded even better when I escaped from the stage to dance :0) Then the grand raffle, and a few more songs and lots more sharing of happy memories of Joe, his love of life, family, friends and singing. It was lovely to meet Joe's family, who were so pleased to see us all there. We won't forget you, Joe. |
18 Feb 08 - 07:36 AM (#2265240) Subject: RE: Joe Kerins Memorial Day From: GUEST,The black belt caterpillar wrestler I expect that it sounded better to you Noreen because you didn't have the bass side of my Anglo in your ear any more! I hope that we were not too off putting for the dancers, but seeing that we had three sets up for some of the dances it can't have been completely awfull. It was nice to hear the various stories about Joe and to learn more about someone who I had first met only a few years ago. I deeply regret that there was not time for our friendship to continue. |
18 Feb 08 - 02:27 PM (#2265544) Subject: RE: Joe Kerins Memorial Day From: GUEST,Bendle Well done to Scowie & Fred, a cracking day and a fitting tribute to Joe. |
20 Feb 08 - 12:48 PM (#2267557) Subject: Joe Kerins Memorial day From: GUEST,Mike O'Leary-Johns FROM SCOWIE .............. This event held at the Irish World Heritage Centre Manchester,on the 16th of feb was a huge success. The day was opened and blessed by Joe's Parish Priest, father david, who the enlivened the the singaround with a Bob Dylan Song.It was a session of rare quality, and produced many anecdotes of Joe and his times. Then to the accompaniment of the pipes, followed the the Grand Irish Buffet Meal{and grand it was too!} complete with Guiness so thick " you could trot a pony on the head" all reinforcing that Nations reputation for hospitality, writ large. After a suitable interval came the "Giant Raffle" of donated prizes,an enormous affair.then a sale of Joe's own collection of Song Books, at knock down prices...since his family insisted they go to appreciative homes, within the Folk Song World. As a result of both the above ,many returned home with a bargain,a momento or a prize. We were then ready for the Ceili. Our Scratch Band revealeed itself to be a marvellous thing and wonders were performed under the direction of "master Caller...Geoff Miller, proving himself to be at the very top of his trade. The Evening concluded with a final "Sing" to see us home. I and Joe's Family would like to thank the Irish Centre, all who were involved and all who attended, particularly "my Comrades of the Fireside Fusiliers" who rallied to the Bugle magnificently. Joe's Grandchildren were a delight the whole day through [ Joe would have been proud of them]. Their efforts with the raffle meant that a Creditable Sum was raised for the British Heart Foundation. In Total £894.41 has been passed on to them. JOE " was There , and His Smile reached down to everyone of us. GRATEFUL THANKS, SLAINTE , SCOWIE . All I can add is WELL DONE SCOWIE..................... |
