I'm a bit worried about the potentially over-zealous stewarding at this event. I mean: "I have pm'd you regarding one small Yorkie"??? What's the big deal about bringing chocolate? And don't get me started on the MCs...

Hamish......and we don't want any of those Mars or KitKats either....

Just a reminder if you are bringing a camper or need indoor camping please let me know as we need to allocate space for both to ensure people don't end up parking or sleeping (!) on top of each other. Camper van parking is free...indoor camping in the Village Hall is £5 per person per night with all proceeds going directly to Village Hall funds....a worthy cause, we've put on a few gigs on there as well...and you should have seen the pantomime last year.......

Just had Jez Lowe's agent on the phone tonight confirming details of his appearance at Winter Warmer Weekend on the Saturday 16th. Did you know Jez is one of the 4 artists shortlisted for BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards - Folk Singer of the Year? He'll know by 4th February if he's got it or not.

So Kirkby Fleetham could be putting on the 2008 Folk Singer of the Year at the Winter Warmer Weekend...how cool is that?!

(Failing that, it is definitely putting on a nominee for the aforementioned - Well done, Jez!)

It has got to be the best value festival in the history of the universe. With events starting at 09.30 on Saturday morning (I know, cos I'm MCing it! Better get to bed before the wee small hours get too big again the night before!) and going on until a "last man standing" late night session. All for 15 quid!!!

Oh, and did anybody mention the excellent beers?

He's promising to make the "full English" and other meals attractively inexpensive so that no one has any need to leave the pub all weekend....though there are some nice walks around her if you feel the need.

Cheers

are tickets needed for the pub singaround?

14 Jan 08 - 06:00 PM (#2236464)
Subject: RE: Winter Warmer Weekend N.Yorkshire UK FEB
From: Banjiman

Unfortunately yes, for 2 reasons....

1/ It means we don't have to internally "police" the event to see who has tickets and who doesn't, we'd rather that everyone can just wander around freely.

2/ For the event to break even we need to fill the pub with ticket holders, otherwise I am personally out of pocket.....doing the full weekend at such low cost means that there is no slack in the finances.

3/ All of the acts have also agreed to appear for low or no fees to help get the club and the Winter Warmer Weekend off the ground....it completely negates their generosity in building up a fund for future events if people don't pay. Even without acts these things cost money to put on.

I'm sorry if this doesn't meet your particular needs....the full weekend is only £15 though with day tickets available at the ridiculously low cost of £5 for Friday or Sunday and £8 for Saturday....I don't think anyone can really complain at these prices.

If the Winter Warmer is successful (i.e. we sell all the tickets....still 20 left!) and everyone has a good time (with 5 real ales and the talents of the bands and informal singers & players, I think they will) we might do a "1st birthday party" in November as a weekend...we'll see!

Paul, we've done a continuous three hour set afore!
Reckon we can do four hours of rehearsed material (at this stage) before we'd have to repeat anything, or play owt on the fly!

Dear Mr McF, you think that's impressive......Brother Crow who are on on Friday night as well have several songs that last 4 hours EACH (Sorry Graeme, sorry Andy,,,,I just couldn't resist!!).

You 2 (Duncan/ Hamish) better be nice about them though as Graeme is also doing the sound for the weekend.

Actually they're great listen to them here: http://www.myspace.com/kirkbyfleethamfolkclub
along with Duncan....and I'll put one of Hamish's tracks up as well.....when I can find his CD!! (sorry Hamish) in the meantime you can hear him here

Now now Paul, you know very well we're working on that concept album (yes really)...and you STILL haven't heard us do "Joshua" with its 20 minute mandolin solo...prog folk indeed!!!

We can do around 6 hours (seriously) before we repeat ourselves, over half of that would be original songs.....and that's not including the songs that Andy could do on his own.

We've a warm up gig next Thursday (7th February) at the Kings, Hope Street, Crook, Co. Durham where we'll be restricting ourselves to just the three hours...come along if you're in the area, it'll be noisy though, 'cos it's a pub gig. Will we compromise our material.......not a chance!!!

Looking forward to the KFFC weekend.

Graeme,
Brother Crow.

Friday = 21 max
Sat = 14 max (actually weekend tickets)
Sun = 23 max

I hope that makes sense! £5 for Friday, £8 for Saturday, £5 for Sunday. £15 for the weekend.

He says, and I quote:

"I have a Saturday Night concert at The Winter Warmer Weekend at The Black Horse in Kirkby Fleetham, where the full line-up includes Keepers Fold, Brother Crow and The Duncan McFarlane Band in what promises to be a humdinger of a festival."

So there you go, it's officially a humdinger....

My review of the festivities.......

Wow......people came!

Firstly a big thank you to everyone who came and helped create the great vibe for the weekend. Special mention has to go to (in no particular order!) to: Tony Levy, Hamish Currie, Glyn (Burneston Folk Club) Cavell, Joolz Cavell, Brother Crow & Ruth & Wendy Arrowsmith....all of whom have MySpace pages and are in my Top Friends....(check them out from here) . Thanks also to Zeke, Jenny and Phil & Gill at the Black Horse who don't!

I'm not going to write about every act....just pull out some highlights!

I'll start on Friday, though it seems a distant memory. We had 90 plus paying punters.....Tony Levy opened the whole event giving us folk, but not as we know it with plenty of witty songs and banter. Tony did an excellent stint as M.C. as well.......you should invite him to be part of your festival too. The world needs people like Tony....and boy can his other (better?) half, Sian, sing or what?

The Hall Brothers & John Carey were relatively new to me (I had previously seen about 15 mins of them in a noisy pub in Whitby) and lots of other people up our way. Thoroughly professional performance and I am under threats of death (mainly from the ladies, Nick) to re-book them....which I am more than happy to do! Good songs and tunes and fine fiddle and guitar playing.

Brother Crow on the other hand I seem to see at least once a month........not for the faint hearted their epic acoustic prog-folk songs are thoroughly rewarding painting vivid pictures of the Durham Dales....they played my favourite songs to....including Tom Barton (aka "Freebird for Folkies")......it's not short (the mandolin solo alone is longer than most pop songs) but is a beautiful piece of writing. .....Andy does need to learn to stop insulting the club organiser's banjo though!

We had the full Duncan McFarlane Electric six piece band to finish the evening....folk 'n' Roll at it's loudest ....absolutely rocked the place...top stuff!!!!!!!

Sing around still going strong when I left at 1.15 a.m. top hearty trad stuff from Mick McGarry and his mates from Hull & beyond...and lots of good stuff from guys and girls with their guitars...oh and dulcimers, banjos (4s & 5s) mandolins, recorders, whistles, accordions etc, etc....... cool as f*ck actually. Folk music, cool?......oh yes!)

Took a fab walk from home on a very crisp Saturday morning to the pub (I forgot the car on Friday night....just as well really) in time for a bleary start at something past 10a.m. from my pal Joolz and some of her great self penned songs.

The Hut People (that's Gary Hammond who was the percussionist for The Beautiful South & Sam Pirt on Piano accordion from 422) were up next........they really are fantastic, mixing tunes & rhythms from all over the world, I didn't know accordion could be so interesting! Great guys as well.

The acts came thick and fast after that, I think I caught at least a bit of everyone.....Zeke Deighton with his fine traditional tales of rape, pillage and love.....Rod Baxter and his flying fingers (boy, he can really PLAY guitar).....Anna Shannon, who I could listen to all night, great singer with great self penned songs deeply rooted in North Yorkshire (and occasionally Tennessee!)....Diad playing some fine Irish tunes and songs.....Hearty, unaccompanied, traditional 3 part harmonies from 2 Black Sheep and a Stallion (rafters were raised!).......A very polished Stan Graham, this guy has real presence and a bunch of fine songs.......Brother Crow again (I'm not going to flatter them any more though!).......

Hamish Currie did a fab set which included some great guitar playing, fine traditional (and other) songs and the on stage creation of a South American (I think, Hamish WILL tell me if I'm wrong, I have no doubt!!) party brass band using looped Cornet....pretty surreal in a pub in North Yorkshire but very clever.

The Young 'Uns REALLY raised the rafters...again, great unaccompanied (mainly) harmonious mixture of trad, self penned and other songs.......top entertainment from top lads.

Then the Mrs (Wendy Arrowsmith) did her (nearly) solo set....well I like her anyway, very hard to be objective about this act! She did foolishly invite a certain banjo player on stage to sing a song.......that destroyed the lovely mellow vibe she had created!

Keepers Fold did what Keepers Fold do.......the rafters were so raised that they were now in orbit. Great hearty singing & playing from Iain (he's getting married....congrats) and Jeff. They mistakenly left of a couple of "I'm a Keepers Fold Groupie" T shirts behind...I'm sorely tempted to start wearing one!

Then Jez Lowe (who had arrived early enough to join in the bear pit that had once been a singaround....and hold his own against the massed ranks of 2 Black Sheep & A Stallion, Keepers Fold, The Young 'Uns and "Da Crew" from Hull and beyond. None of your namby pamby "I'm a star" attitude from Jez....which gets huge kudos from me. His set was pretty fine too....he has this ability to completely draw in an audience with his songs and playing.........his stagecraft is absolutely amazing.

110 paying punters (thank you, thank you, thank you!) + bands, locals and assorted organisers meant that Saturday night was hot, sweaty and really pulsing in both the singaround (still going when I left at 1.30ish) in the bar and in the concert in the club room.........I really quite enjoyed myself!

Aren't kids great? My 8 year old daughter said to me over the breakfast table "I can't believe it's the last day of The Winter Warmer, I want it all to start again tomorrow"....she pretty much summed up my feelings.

Another beautiful walk through the North Yorkshire Countryside got me to the pub ....I must take the car home at some point! Sunday was mellow mainly, I kinda drifted through the first few acts.......came too momentarily and sort of tuned into Acoustica...top harmonies and assorted instruments and a good choice of songs.

I woke up later and realised my wife was on stage with another, younger man.......oh the anguish....actually I pretty quickly got over the anguish when I heard the sounds they were making. Ian McKone really is a top musician...he played stunning guitar (if you haven't heard him you really should), fab mandolin....oh and he sings a bit (ahem...if you haven't heard him etc....). This was their debut as a duo, they were pretty damn good, I suspect with a few more gigs under their belts they will be really stunning. Nice complimentary harmonies and some good arrangements. Looks like me and the banjo might be out of work again...........

Zoox were a revelation.....folk music on a contra bassoon? We have it all at The Winter Warmer! Fantastic musicianship on all things blown, plucked, bowed or banged.....except (thankfully) not a guitar in sight. Tight vocal harmonies, great arrangements and a really interesting selection of material. BOOK THEM FOR YOUR FESTIVAL NOW!

I drifted back off to "Uncle" Chris Milner......in a really nice, fuzzy warm way.....completely mellow, nice one Chris! I was so relaxed I forgot to tell him when to finish and kind of interrupted his flow when I zoned back in and remembered that they were making me do some M.C. work this afternoon. oooops.

I then added in a special, extra treat for the hardened people who had survived this long....Mick McGarry, he had done sterling work in the singarounds all weekend and I reckoned it wasn't safe for anyone to drive after an hour of the mellow CM. Mick woke us all up with his fine renditions of traditional and "struggle" songs...more top stuff.

I must mention the singarounds again....I walked into the bar at one point on Saturday and the beautiful sound of singing completely blew me away....2 Black Sheep, Keeper's Fold, Young 'uns, Mick McGarry and everyone else in the room all singing their heads off with perfect harmonies together.....the hairs on the back of my neck were standing on end....the very essence of "folk" music...perfect!

Lot's of other good stuff discovered in the singarounds, I suspect some of them might find their way onto a stage around here in the not too distant future.

KFFC 1st birthday party weekend on 14th-16th November anyone?

Plenty of club nights before then as well.

As I say, I think we got away with it!

Paul

Paul & Wendy,
It is a mammoth and often thankless task to organise such an event and a risk too, well done doesn't seem to appropriate, your efforts were magnificent. I think from a performers point of view you spotted it really well and the singarounds, stuff of legends, I was glad I was part of it and Ron and Martin enjoyed it equally, so next time we're in!. We will be up for a visit to the club, e-mail me or phone. thanks again Paul & Wendy.
regards
Pete

Many thanks and hearty congratulations from the East Yorkshire contingent for an excellent weekend. In spite of nearly freezing to death in the Kamper Van as both gas and water froze, the days soon warmed us up. The singarounds were fantastic and threatened to lift the roof at times on Saturday.
Andy and Graham did a wonderful job with the sound as well as providing great entertainment themselves, and as usual Duncan and Band had the walls bulging with fabulous folk rock (when will they get invited to Cropredy??). But all the acts were top class and a tribute to Paul's (and Wendy's I am sure)organisational skills.
Look forward to a repeat in November when hopefully sufficient "vittles" will be available to keep us hungry and thirsty acoustic fans from drinking the pub dry again.
I must say that drinking water all day Sunday, as I had to drive later, was chastening but probably for the best, as we had taken our libations liberally for 11 hours on Friday and 14 hours on Saturday.
Well done to all concerned.
Peter & Barbara

Phew, it was a great weekend wasn't it...we'd like to thank all the people who helped us get things going from a sound/stage management point of view. Fifteen minutes is a very short turnaround, and as this was the first festival we'd done sound for, we appreciated the help and input.

Paul and Wendy of course, for their organisation - all of the acts arrived at the venue in good time to prepare for their slots, a logistical nightmare if ever there was one. They listened to our stage setup suggestions when we got there, and all that helped make our lives that little bit easier...

The MCs throughout the weekend, also contributed in no small way, Dave Kidman, Tony Levy, Glyn Cavell, Hamish Currie and even Paul Arrowsmith for his Sunday MC duties!!! They all helped us in getting people on stage for soundchecking, helping us to "persuade" people to get OFF the stage quickly, and generally being there to do things when we asked...

The artists made it easy for us as well...because of our relative inexperience, there were a few acts that we'd had nightmares about in advance (Zoox and the Duncan McFarlane Electric Band spring to mind), but everyone made it really easy for us, and were so nice. Cheers guys.

There were lots of other people, too numerous to mention, who did little things throughout the weekend...every kind word gave us confidence, and helped keep us going...

Ruth would like to thank all of the people who were so appreciative of her merchandising duties. It was a first for her as well, and the patience and understanding of all was much appreciated.

Here's to the next one.

Graeme,
Brother Crow.

Well, I suppose I'd better add my penny ha'penny's worth but I can't think what there is left to say!. It was a really cool event ( ;-)) and trust the Winter Warmer to be on the coldest weekend so far!. Paul - I told you to book the weather well in advance!. Actually, it was great driving in each morning through the frost and the haze - truly atmospheric.

My one gripe?. I'm already triple booked for the November weekend - RATS!!!!!

Hope to see you all again in April.

Thanks for a memorable weekend.

For interest: an alternative review of The Winter Warmer (Sunday) from Acoustica , who did a fine set on Sunday morning...and stayed awake!

On Sunday February 17th we travelled down to Kirby Fleetham in North Yorks to play an early morning set at the Kirby Fleetham Folk Club Winter Warmer Festival, held in the Black Horse pub. Did I say early? I mean early!! Dave Kidman, an accomplished unaccompanied singer and ace raconteur, opened the proceedings, and then we hit the stage at 11:15am (early alright), to a lovely, mellow audience who comprised singers, performers and fans of all kinds of music.

The festival had begun on the Friday night and the atmosphere and friendly feel of the event was already established by the time we arrived. Some brave souls had camped, despite the frost - caked inches thick on the camper-vans in the pub car park. It was good to see some familiar faces, Sean from The Young 'Uns, Ruth and Andy & Graeme from Brother Crow, and a whole host of myspace friends such as Joolz, Ian McKone, and of course the event organisers Wendy & Paul Arrowsmith.

We were introduced by MC Hamish Currie, who had researched our bio and asked some humorous questions about the Prog- rock side of our musical tastes!! For the record, we played From The Lighthouse/Ready For The Storm/Steal The Time Away/Remember Me/Silent House. What a lovely audience, they made us feel very welcome and it's always nice to hear your own choruses being sung. It was all over too soon. Several folks approached us afterwards to ask about our instruments- we took the BSG jumbos- there were also a number of enquiries about my tiple.

We mingled for a while, watched Pillow Fish, and Wendy Arrowsmith & Ian McKone's very accomplished set, before heading off in late afternoon sunshine.

Special thanks to Graeme from Brother Crow for doing our sound and Ruth for merchandising.

The whole event was brilliant and it was great to have been asked to take part.

Please note change of date for 1st birthday bash....we are going to hold it on w/e of 21st-23rd November. This is entirely so that Busy Bee Paul can attend and nothing to do with the fact that The Villain has offered Wendy (Mrs Banjiman) a gig at Faldingworth Live on November 15th..........

Please let everyone know!

Thanks

Well that's also in the diary. In pencil. And there's a horrible smudgy pencilly mess where the other one was in pencil but my rubber wasn't really up to the job. (Now where have I heard /that/ before?)

Although I suspect you were worried that the earlier date held too much risk of an Indian summer heatwave and the later one is more likely to have sub-zero temperatures for the jolly campers. Talking of which, how was the indoor camping? I hear it was toasty warm.

Hamish,

I hear the indoor camping was lovely and warm if a little gaseous......the fees from this raised over £100 for our village hall as well!

WWW2 will take place next Feb, I'm waiting for the long range weather forecast before confirming which weekend ....just to make sure we pick the coldest one of the year again!

Cheers

Anyway, as the first KFFC was on 24th November 2007, having the first birthday party any earlier would be a bit previous, wouldn't it?.
