To 'Peace' what do you mean 'refresh'?

"Refresh" means that Peace was trying to help you by keeping this thread from disappearing in spite of the fact that he doesn`t have what you are looking for.

Good luck
Ernest (who can`t help you either)

Have you contacted the BBC to see if they have it in their archives?

When you made your post, I had a quick search on the net, and found that more recent programmes have been archived.

Check the BBC website: Click Here.

Hi Brendy, the BBC havnt kept recordings from the 70's-80's. They have 1 from 1967 and 1 from 1968. When people contact them for pamphlets or recordings the BBC direct them to me!

Thank you for your suggestion though!

No bother, my man...
As to how you refresh a thread, I figure you've worked that one out by now... ;-)

As you are a member, you can click on the 'Trace' link on the main Forum page, and this will appear in your 'Personal Page' (On the Top Menu), so if you do lose track of a thread you can go to that section and retrieve (or 'refresh') it easily enough.

Threads drop off the bottom of the page after 24 hrs of non-refreshing, so it's a handy function of the Mudcat, and can avoid too many threads being created on more or less the same subject, with the same request.

I hope, though you find what you're looking for; I wouldn't know where to start.

All the best.

B.

I recenty found the last five minutes of a Singing Together Broadcast from the the early 80's I think it may even be Autumn Term 1980 - the programme was presented by Stephen Varcoe. It includes 2 verses of The Hopak then after the closing announcement a complete performance of Reap the Flax with solos from Andrew Shore and Stephen Varoce.

My collection of broadcasts begins with Autumn 1984 - with every broadcast until the early 90's. The first collection of songs includes The Fox, The Yellow Rose of Texas, Killy of Coleraine and Cosher Bailey - the programmes are presented by Andrew Shore.

A lot of schools used to record these programmes so they could play them at a more convenient time. It might be worth approaching local primary schools to see if they have any old tapes or cassettes at the back of a cupboard. You never know what might turn up. At my very first school I caused chaos by borrowing the tape-recorder to use in a lesson. I switched it off, instead of just pulling the plug out of the socket, and no-one else could get it to work again.

In reply to freshwhitelillies comment - I do remember both the time and tunes series you mention - but I can't find any reference to them anywhere on the web.... Have you had any luck?
I am also trying to find a classroom musical - I'm not sure who it was produced by - but it was based on the life of Elizabeth I - called Good Queen Bess - Does anyone have any information on this?
Thanks

I can remember the Singing Together broadcasts in the 1970s. I was at Castlehill Primary School in Bearsden and we got Singing Together from P5 through to P7. The songbooks that accompanied the broadcasts were always beautifully illustrated. The broadcasts were entertaining although I wasn't too keen on the old ballads. I think it's fair to say that the words "fair maid" and "love" occurred in a Singing Together broadcast like the word "minister" in an episode of Yes Minister. At the end of each series there was a vote on the most popular songs that had featured in that series. The winners of the vote were always bouncy upbeat non-romantic songs like Pay Me My Money Down and The Banana Boat Song. The teacher I had in P7, a woman who seemed to think kids should only like the things that elderly ladies in the 1970s liked, complained about the ballads being at the bottom of the poll or not included at all. She had no empathy with kids. On the subject of the vote, can you tell me the name of the presenter. I know one was Johnny Morris but who was the other one? If I can speak freely, he was a bit of a drip. The week before the results of the vote, he finished the programme by saying "Next week we're going to find out the results of your votes. Oh I can hardly wait". When the programme with the vote was broadcast he started with the words "At last the great day has arrived!". My words to him, 35 years on, are "Get a life". He was on another schools radio programme, the title of which I can't remember, and he said "You know, at school people used to call me "Rosie, Rosebud" and there's nothing really rosy about me at all". But it's fair to say he sounded a bit camp. Anyway, part of my not too fondly remembered years at Castlehill Primary but Singing Together was a good programme which definitely did stimulate my interest in music.

Hi

My search for old recordings of Singing Together continues - especially from the seventies and early eighties. I have many sets of School Radio Broadcasts but would love to get more from Singing Together!

My oldest broadcast is the request programme from Spring Term 1977 - the winning song was Pay Me My Money Down - copy the link below for a sample from the broadcast! The presenter was John Camburn and Soloist Stephen Varcoe.

Hi Freshwhitelillies,

I have the booklet for Rumpelstiltskin 'Music Workshop'- my primary school performed it when I was a kid. Absolutely brilliant songs. Email me at bleakleys@hotmail.com and I can sort some scans out for you if you want assuming it's not a copyright outrage. First published 1978, reprinted 1980. Words R D Ward, music Peter Hutchings. The songs are 1 Miller's Song, 2 Echo Song sung by Ethel("Verse One: Locked up in this emptiness all alone, Life's become as grey as these walls of stone. Oh, how unkind my fortune seems! Nothing left to comfort me but my dreams. Verse Two: Just myself for company, only me. Words I speak come back to me constantly. I hear the echoes of each sigh. All alone with me, mtself and I.") 3 Spinning Song, 4 Two-as-One Song, 5 Name-Guessing Song 6 Interlude, 7 Gloating Song, 8 Wedding March, 9 Let the Bells Ring.

I've emailed the person with the Rumpelstiltskin booklet to request a scanned copy, where possible I would like to record some of these songs and make them publicly available on Youtube.

The BBC have destroyed both books and recordings so making new ones for non commercial purposes is within the Fair Use regulation of copyright

I can see that magiscot666@aol.com is selling these items on ebay. From what he says above about wanting them as a resource if schools, or if individuals would like to borrow any or as a physical record of them does not seem indicate putting them up for sale on ebay. Hopefully schools, or those who helped out got something out of it as well.
