Truman who became a concert singer, actress, radio and TV personality and mystery writer, died Tuesday. She was 83. Truman, known as Margaret Truman Daniel in private life, died at a Chicago assisted living facility following a brief illness, according to Susan Medler, a spokeswoman for the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum in Independence. She had been at the facility for the past several weeks and was on a respirator, the library said. |

Hard to believe that she is (was) 83 years of age just I cannot believe my own children are in middle age. One feels ones own mortality at moments like this. Margaret Truman was an icon of sorts---a very good mystery writer and a credit to being part of a "first" family. How many recall the great incident when she made her singing debut and it was panned by a critic. Her father, then President, wrote a note (made quite public)telling the critic that if he ever met him in person he would need a new nose. A more open time with more open leaders=-=for good or bad. I am sure she will always be remembered fondly. Her husband, Clifton Daniel, I believe, pre-deceased her. On a political note. HST left office with a very low rating and now is considered a great President. History and the outcome of earlier decisions mark the person's place in history. The current White House inhabitor will also be judged by those standards. HST loved her and like any father was proud and supportive of whatever she did. Here's a good piece, her MSNBC Obit which includes a famous and funny story about that doting father: When Washington Post critic Paul Hume wrote after a 1950 concert that she "is extremely attractive on the stage ... (but) cannot sing very well. She is flat a good deal of the time," her father fired off a note on White House stationery scolding Hume for a lousy review.쳌 "I have never met you, but if I do you'll need a new nose and plenty of beefsteak and perhaps a supporter below," the president wrote. Somehow I always think of Margaret Truman as a young woman, even though intellectually I know she wasn't. Maybe it's because I remember seeing her when I was a kid. My father was a reporter for the Associated Press in Washington DC, and a member of the National Press Club. Every other year they had a "Father-Daughter Dinner" (I think they had father-son dinners the other years), and we always went. It was very exciting to get all dressed up and go out for the evening with my Dad, and the Press Club always had top-tier guests. One year President Truman was the guest, and he brought along his daughter Margaret. Very fitting, and very entertaining, too -- he played the piano and she sang. I thought it was wonderful. She was quite a good writer, too. In addition to the mysteries, which are excellent and very popular, she wrote biographies of both her parents, and an autobiography. Rest in peace, Margaret. Nancy |

Clinton a Truman inauguration pin in 1993, just after at a campaign rally here in Louisville, Kentucky. I was able to take a picture of Clinton wearing the pin, and later sent a copy to Ms. Truman for her signature, which she gladly signed and returned to me. Just before the inauguration I gave it to the president-elect, thinking that Chelsea might enjoy it. A way for a regular fellow to connect two First Daughters. I hope Chelsea met Margaret Truman, who certainly could have given her great aadvise, and support, as President and Mrs. Truman's daughter. She will be missed. DavidCook, Louisville, Kentucky |
