BS: What Have You Learned From Mudcat?

Subject: What Have You Learned From Mudcat?
From: topical tom

I hope that I'm not repeating a thread here, but there didn't seem to be one in the Forum or Digitrad.
I have greatly enjoyed my relatively brief venture into Mudcat.Among many other things,I never dreamed of how many different versions there could be of the same song, though I know I should have learned that from the folk process as described by Pete Seeger and many others.Anyway, I could ramble on much longer but it's other people's turn now.By the by, negative aspects may also be included but with respect for other people's feelings and with fairness.

I've learned how to do a Blue Clicky Thing.

(I haven't learned how to be a smart-ass. I already knew how to do that before I got here.)

And Tom.....Some subjects are worth revisiting every now and again. This has often been discussed here but its normal to talk about it every so often.

There is so much more here than music if you want it. Very few sites become as "intimate," for lack of a better word, as the 'Cat. I came here in '98 and have seen the reactions of people here including myself, in all manner of situations. Mostly I have seen the best of what people can be but occasionally I've seen the worst. It makes Mudcat much like any other part of life. I get a kick out some who rag on the joint saying its nothing but another message board. For some reason though they keep coming back. We have someone posting on the political threads at the moment who swears undying contempt (for the past 7 or 8 years) for the place and yet can't seem to stay away. She and a few others like Gargoyle are kinda' our "In-House Trolls." But ain't that a lot like the 3D world too?

I've learned more than I ever needed or wanted to know on some subjects and found myself amazed at the depth of knowledge and intelligence that inhabits this place. I've laughed til I've cried at some of the wit and humor. And I've simply cried over losing close friends I have made here, many of whom I never met in the 3D. It didn't make their friendship or their loss any less real.

I've had the privilege of inflicting my incredibly warped sense of humor on the place and also sharing the most personal details of my life with one of the most supportive communities I have ever known......in any fashion. Don't let anyone tell you that the 'Cat isn't a "place." The people here have pulled me through some tough times and I hope I have helped out when they needed an ear or a good thought.

We're glad you're here Tom and I hope you enjoy your stay.......and that its a long one. ...........your stay that is............well, that too but I was referring to your stay here and not your dick.............but then again you probably figured that out................or maybe not..................hell, I dunno'.............just skip this paragraph....................or not...........

I concur with what Catspaw said, except for the dick references. I have been visiting the Mudcat for nine years now, and have made some very good friends here, had some good arguments, engaged in some creative writing, and been praised, castigated, or ignored when appropriate. I've also been stimulated to learn more about playing and appreciating acoustic music, and find that the eclectic nature of the discourse here is conducive to acquiring at least a modicum of knowledge in multiple areas of traditional music forms.

And...oh yeah...Thanks, Max!

Bobad

Bee
Gnu
Noah Zacharin

Charmion
Susan of DT
Dick Greenhaus
Emma B
Rehab I and 2
John F. Weldon
Bob Ryszkiewiez
And two whom I have met but won't identify their mudcat name to me. Topical Tom and C. Ham. I will find out eventually.

Then there are all the other folks whom have been so supportive, friendly, kind and pricks.

Love you all.

I've learned a lot more about folk music in the last 10 years than I would have without mudcat. I learned songs and song origins and lots more "extra" stuff.
I also learned that, like everywhere, there are people who are wonderful in a group and a few who are not.

Personally, it's just great to be able to converse with so many singer-musicians, true scolars of the music I so love. Before Mudcat there was nowhere that I could learn the words to old songs and chat about them with people I now consider my friends.I hope I have learned to be more thorough in my research. How easy it is to be sure something is a fact which, upon hearing from others, is not so!What a treasury of music and knowledge Mudcat is!

What humor? Everything here is dead serious and all those who post are sober tee-totalers. All of the women wear their hair in a tightly wrapped bun and wear burkas, all of the men where highly starched shirts, scratchy wool suits, pince-nez glasses, and work as accountants.

That's what I learned from Mudcat.

And that the trumpet is the instrument of the gods and goddesses....

In addition to most of the things mentioned by others, I've learned a lot about myself.

In conversing about many interesting topics, I spent time composing ideas & answers much more slowly than I would have in person: often having days or weeks to consider my feelings or positions. I have learned to hone and refine my comments and perhaps revise a few of them! *wry grin*.

There are so many folks here with different positions, attitudes, knowlege...and yes...even weirdnesses... that I have learned to moderate how I interact with them. Maybe *I* am a bit of a better person for having hung out here for over 11 years. (yes...since late Oct. of 96!)

Joined just over 5 years ago and found some great people right across the globe who have helped in all sorts of manner, music etc etc, alas as with the humans species I have also found some complete arses, and trolls, who can and will lie and are deceitful beyond believe, although saying that it is a very small percent, thank god.

Some Catters have helped me through some very tough moments, and to them i am truly grateful, and I hope I have been able to give some of that back when it was needed.

All in all I have made some good honest friends, found some great music and hope this will continue for many years to come.

I have learned...
* an incredible amount of history about the songs I heard growing up
* how to be a better singer, storyteller and musician (thanks)
* that most Mudcatters are a fun-loving bunch of people with whom I'd gladly share a pint (anytime, really!)
* that the VAST majority of Mudcatters are supportive to newcomers to the tradition (thanks again)
* that some Mudcatters are self-righteous folk snobs who only seem to log-on in order to validate their self-worth (bugger off, the quicker the better)

But the most shocking thing I've learned is this:
* NO ONE CAN AGREE ON WHAT FOLK MUSIC IS!

It 's not so much that we COULDN'T; but its like that old story of putting a million monkeys into a room with typewriters and expecting them to come up, eventually, with a complete Shakespearean text.

Sure, they could do it. But they wouldn't hang around long enough to prove it to anyone.

Same thing here. We just found the subject too deep and time consuming to stick to long enough! :D

Like Beer, I've ended up meeting or communicating with some cool people (like Beer). Frank Hamilton also comes to mind.

I've learned that people can become steamed at the most innocent remarks, and have very strong opinions on topics both weighty and flakey.

I've found that when I inadvertently cause someone to let loose a string of vituperation, it's strangely enjoyable; almost as good as a compliment. I imagine steam belching from their ears, as I smile seraphically, and head off for the more serene world of Facebook.

I would, but I don't understand what he said. He seems to be indicating that The Bard's works were dome by a million typewriters with monkeys in them, but the monkeys didn't survive long enough to prove how deeply they were consumed by the stick. Is that it?

We've got something!!!!" He grabs the sheet out of one monkey's typewriter, and reads, "To be, or not to be, that is YUIY&*(*(HB+@E$%^%&(pogkl;sn."

Yeah, Amos. Infinite patience would also be required of the proofreaders of such an experiment. Imagine the frustration of getting to the last speech in A Midsummer Night's Dream and reading

and, as I am an honest Puck,
if we have unearned luck
now to scape the serpent's tongue
we will make amends ere long;
Else the Puck a liar call.
So goodnight unto you all.
Give me your hands if we be friends,
and a ham sandwich with extra mayo

and having to shout "my God we almost had it!" And then realizing the same mistake was also likely to be repeated an infinite number of times.

The mind boggles.

Well I have learnt that the world is a much nicer place than I had imagined, there are some very generous and lovely people about.
There are also one or two exceedingly unpleasant trolls.
That I am by no means the only person in the world obsessed with the study of folk music.
That no two people agree on the definition of what we all talk about.
That there's a woman who likes Seth Lakeman a lot, and another woman who doesn't.
That Iraq and Israel are thread subjects best left alone
That some Americans understand irony, but not many
(The most important lesson) think very carefully and reread before you press that "submit message"
That Sir JOhn from Hull is the funniest writer in the world.
That you should not come home from the pub after half a dozen pints of the landlord's best, and expect to write coherently about the Myxolydian mode.
That there are some people here who know an absolutely fantastic amount of stuff about folk music.
How to make hash browns(not that anyone agreed about that, either)
That will do for starters

I've learned that not everyone on line is a wanker, and a lot of non-wankers end up here, even if they aren't that fond of folk music. Even some trolls stay and become members. I think.

Many things I think. Humility when reading the words written by others in their songs and posts; sadness when reading the depths of despair people reach at different times; conscience when someone posts from a POV I'd never considreed. I've learned that a kind word goes far with greater ease than a harsh word. That compared to so many people here I really don't know all that much about anything. There are usually at least 10, even 20 outhouses in a giant line at a folk festival...so it isn't just a question of picking "the one on the left". No, no, it is much more complex and esoteric than that. One must observe the outhouse choices of a folkie meticulously over a period of several years, bringing in advanced numerology in order to understand exactly where his political sympathies lie. Having done so, one can finally arrive at an absolute certaintly about something that never mattered much in the first place...but OH, the satisfaction of knowing that one knows!

I have learned that posting on this online forum is a meaning full, often educational, sometimes enjoyable, sometimes maddening, sometimes energizing, and sometimes emotionally draining form of interaction.

I have learned that a person's spirit can be communicated vividly through their words, so much so that over time and/or as the result of a large number of posts in a short time, it can seem as though you know other people who post here very well, even if you've never met them-and may never meet them-face to face.

I have learned that you can very much like some things about some people, and very much dislike some other things about the same people.

I have learned that because of the positive experiences I have had relating with them on this forum, the positions that some people take on issues that I consider important matter to me so much more than the same positions taken by other people who post here who I have not related to [with?} as well.

I have learned that I have a lot to learn- about music, folk cultures, and life itself.

{Actually, I knew the last four things before my involvement on Mudcat, but I know them more deeply now than I did before}

Azizi makes a really good point. It amazes me sometimes that I can agree completely with a poster on one issue, and disagree just as completely on something else.

I've learned that sometimes you find a diamond, amongst the pebbles.

I came to Mudcat via Google while trying to learn what a Hogeye was.
I learned that it is a type of boat that is pulled by a rope. Now does anyone know what Dylan means by "Eating Hogeye beef in a Hogeye town".
Since then I have discovered Planxty (and the various members solo work), Nic Jones, Dick Gaughan, The Corries, and many other wonderful musicians. All thanks to Mudcat with a big assist from You-tube which I barely knew existed before Mudcat's Blue Clickies steered me there.
I've also learned much about current and historic events and that 'Spaw is one funny dude. Some of his Cletus stories like the one about the recycled Christmas trees or the one about the blow-up dolls and explosives make me LOL, like reading Twain used to do. (Uh... btw thats Mark not Shania.) Any more installments coming our way?

"I'll bet Demosthenes broke a couple of teeth."

And...I've learned all about Demosthenes (thank you Bill) :-)

Demosthenes
384-322 BC
As a youth in ancient Athens,   Demosthenes had a severe speech impediment, and people jeered at his stuttering when he addressed his first large public assembly. Demosthenes, the son of a prosperous sword maker, was orphaned when he was only 8. His guardians so pilfered his estate that little was left when Demosthenes came of age. Seeking justice, he successfully pleaded his own case and won damages. To improve his elocution, he talked with pebbles in his mouth and recited verses while running along the seashore over the roar of the waves.

A journalist friend of mine says, "If you want to find out what happened, write what you THINK happened and go wait by the phone."

Mudcat has let me learn things I knew I didn't know. Sorcha must know when I'm going to post a question ahead of time, because the answers are there before the question is finished, or so it seems.

Mudcat has also let me learn more about things I thought I "knew" but didn't. That's sometimes a chastening experience. Sokratic questioning sometimes hurts the brain but in the end you get a better answer for the NEXT time somebody asks the question.

Recently I tried out another site, for the simple reason that some folks on that site had dissed Mudcat rather egregiously. I don't get it. Mudcat is the real world. "If you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen" type thing, and thank you, Harry Truman. I already conclude that I will learn more here in a week than in a year on the other site. And the older I get the less I care about tip-toeing around, so just give it to me straight out, Mudcat style.

But be polite, maggot.

Quite a bit - but mainly that there is no virtue in entering into an argument in the hope of changing someone's mind. Below the line (and even sometimes above it) one can venture an opinion that, however impeccably researched and lucidly written, will attract a negative knee-jerk comment in seconds.
It's a bit like a popular beach on one of those rare, hot summer days; there are respectable families, sunbathers, dreamers, exhaustingly active types and just a few boisterous and ill-mannered kids who take delight in kicking over sandcastles. There may even be someone playing music quietly to themselves and and a few friends. All in all, it's a nice beach, though, and there's no shortage of sand...

All of the above, especially:

That an electronic, virtual world can harbour a truly human community.

That simple elements (alphabet, basic communication equipment, simple procedures that anyone at a public library computer can jump in and use) breed complexity (wisdom, give and take, healing, hurtfulness, learning) even here outside the real universe. But most online communities are not "alive" like this one.

That in this cyberspace, one can ask for help at a time when family and friends are fast asleep, and someone will answer from Australia or Iceland.

That each visit here costs us real life hours from our lives, and can be well worth it. (Great mix of feeling, ideas, and good laughs, and sometimes I can add something.)
