The late A.L.(Bert)Lloyd, singer, folklorist, writer, and guiding light in the British folk revival, was born on Feb 29th 1908. His centenary comes up next week. How about if folk DJ's broadcasting that night, or artists with a gig, could include a Bert song in their shows? He gave a lot to the folk world, let's honour his memory. Burl.

By coincidence, the EFDSS has today released this press release.

ENGLISH FOLK DANCE AND SONG SOCIETY

14 February 2008
BERT LLOYD CENTENARY EVENT ANNOUNCED
February 29th 2008 marks the centenary of the birth of A.L. (Bert) Lloyd, the renowned English singer, folklorist, journalist, and writer. To mark this anniversary, the English Folk Dance and Song Society will publish a biography, by Dave Arthur, entitled Bert: The Life and Work of A.L. Lloyd.

To launch the publication and to celebrate Bert Lloyd's life and work, the English Folk Dance and Song Society will host a day of concerts at its London headquarters, Cecil Sharp House, on Saturday 15 November 2008.

Guests confirmed so far include folk luminaries Frankie Armstrong, Martin Carthy, Bob Davenport with Roger Digby, Will Duke, Dan Quinn and Alex West, Roy Harris, Louis Killen, Maddy Prior, Dave Swarbrick, Norma Waterson, Martyn Wyndham-Read with Iris Bishop and, from the current explosion of young singers and musicians, Lisa Knapp and Sam Lee.

Bert Lloyd (Albert Lancaster Lloyd, 29 February 1908 – 29 September 1982) was not only a world-famous scholar but also a spellbinding singer who inspired many of today's leading folk performers, giving generously of his time and material. He continues to influence new generations of singers through his books and recordings.

Bert's daughter Caroline Clayton and her husband Ted are pleased to support the occasion, all proceeds from which will be donated to the English Folk Dance and Song Society's Vaughan Williams Memorial Library.

Sounds like a great idea, more than happy to add a heap of tracks into the playlist. I never tire of "A Jug of This" from "English Drinking Songs" on Topic...

I'll also play some of Bert's singing in honour of his birthday. I'll do a piece too if I can find enough material.

Looks like a great night out! Thanks to Folkie Dave for the links to the pod casts of his Radio Sheffield Folk Prog. I just had a listen and it sounded excellent!

Shimrod, I saw him a couple of times and he certainly was an amazing performer, made every song his own, that's for sure. So where abouts are you then Shim?

Cheers

Les

Somewhere in the house, but I haven't managed to find them yet, are reel to reel tapes of Bert classic radio series on Australian songs, which I am not convinced exist in the BBC archives. Can anyone enlighten on this?

Sorry Les - the programme is on a community radio called Sheffield Live! Radio Sheffield is the competition (except they scrapped their folk programme ages ago).

Bert was not only one of the 20th centurys great folklorists and singers, in his younger days he worked on an Australian sheep station and actualy was a deck hand on a whaling ship, a truly amazing man.

There are some interesting insights in Michael Brocken's 'English Folk Revival' - not overwhelmingly complimentary about him and MacColl, though.

This time! There is a lengthy piece by E.David Gregory for The Canadian Journal for Traditional Music on line which can be accessed by Googling "A.L.Lloyd" There is a mountain of stuff there about him and it would probably take the rest of the day to read it all.
Thanks for reminding us Roy, he really deserves every tribute going.

I never heard him sing live, unfortunately. But I do remember sitting with a friend, with one of his CDs on in the background, as we chatted and drank late one night. Then Lloyd's live version of 'Tam Lin' came on. After a while we became aware that the conversation had stopped, and both of us were completely transfixed by his telling of the tale. Not a word was spoken for ten minutes or so. The first thing I said in the ensuing silence was: "How the f*** did he do that??!"

Fantastic man! I remember two lecture/recital tours he did in the late sixties(?) - one with Dave & Toni Arthur, and the following year with Tim Hart & Maddy Prior - a real inspiration and a man whose enthusiasm hooked you! And then there was his lecture at the National Festival in Roy Harris' days on 'Virtuosity in folk music' -his only British Isles example was Sheamus Ennis!

see

Bert Lloyd Centenary

There are lots of links to other A.L.Lloyd pages on the web including the start of a listing of Bert Lloyd Centenary celebrations starting with

Illawarra Folk Club & Illawarra Folk Festival (March 7th 2008)

I'd be happy to add more!
