It seems to rip at the level that the CD is recorded at. Madeleine Peyroux is loud, Julie London is medium, Carley Simon is soft, and when I replay at 'random,' it irritates me. Before I rip any more CDs, I want to get it under control. I realise that I could do an intermediatory stage, but that would slow the job down a lot. Record to a folder, and then tell WMP to go fetch it. You get all sorts of funny noises to delete. Perhaps I should investigate other programs. I have Nero 6. Thanks, Chris. |

It's very easy to use but you need to rip your files to mp3, it won't work with wma. It does not simply do peak amplitude normalization. Instead, it performs statistical analysis to determine how loud the file actually sounds to the human ear. There is no loss to the file when you use it either as it just adds some lines of information to the tag to tell the a media player what volume to play it at. It's simple to use and works best when you are bulk changing files. Alex |

Nero 7 and 8 are full of indexing junk that causes considerable slowdown in the computer--it was a lot of work to tamp down all of the junk. I doubt there is any improvement in the ability to edit, record, or burn CDs or DVDs. SRS |

I did download Mediamonkey, -twice, it didn't work when from Twocows,- and although it does as Bill says, it only seems to do it with MP3s, and most of my stuff is on .WMA files, which rather defeats the intention. Now Carley is the loudest, not the softest. Nor does it seem to take unto itself all music file variants, automatically. Perhaps it is just not as intuitive as WMP or I'm not as sympathetic as I could be. It does come with top recommendation. I'll persist with both for the time being. |

It has been a long time since I used it, but it seems that you should get a popup asking if you want to do your cover. That should give you access to the playlist. This is just a guess, though. Poke around in Nero and you'll be surprised at all of the little programs included in the package. SRS |

Well, MediaMonkey definitely does as Bill originally said, it evens out the playback volume, which is all I ever wanted. If you read the instructions (neither do I!) it goes through its library and allocates a (decibal?) correction value, and implements that value on playback. Great. Works well. The trouble is, with my copy, I can't get CDs ripped into the library, nor can I get it to go and get files from Windows MediaPlayer. I suspect a faulty copy, because the original download wouldn't even work. I'll keep trying. Chris. My son got some files in for me, but I don't know how, I wasn't there. I'll ask him. Drag and drop, I suspect. |

After the 1st scan, you must tell it where new tracks are, and what kind of files you want it to pay attention to. Under 'file' -> 'add' or just 'insert' key. |

Windows rips them straight to the library, as .WMA files, and Monkey rips them elsewhere as MP3 files. (So far.) Another irritation is that, with a small-run CD without track identification, I identified the tracks as they were being ripped, and Monkey didn't take the information to the library, so I had to do them again there. I'll get used to it, but it isn't as foolproof and straightforward as WMedia, so isn't intended for nongs like me. |
