I've heard so many versions of this song by Cyril Tawney that I've almost forgotten the original melody. Does anyone have some interesting (preferably jazzy-type) chords for the song? I used to do it in open D but can't get the effect I'm looking for in standard tuning.

adTHANKSvance, Don

I noodle about in DADGAD on this, with various key changes, thus:

054000 032000 020000

and

5x5400 3x3200 x32000

and

7x7600 5x5400 x54000

etc...

One of these ones that seems to have a lot of potential but I've never got it to gig standard. You're welcome to try...

Try:

(D)Sally free and easy, that should (Am) be her (D) name
(next line the same chords)
Took a (F) sailor's (C) loving, for a nursery (D) game (Am) (repeat)

That's what I had written down anyway - I'd probably use different ones now, haven't played it for years.

I first heard this song from a group called Supply Demand and Curve in Dublin in the seventies and really liked their version (with cello, etc). Then I later heard a recording (live?) of Cyril doing it but to be quite honest didn't like his guitar accompaniment at all. I want to do it in standard tuning.

Thanks, Don

I do it in A capo 2 with the bass string down to D & using 7ths. If you're interested pm me with your e-mail address & I'll send you an mp3 - hopefully!

I do basically a rock and roll version.

Capo 3 - then assume that I am playing to E (instead of G)

D is fretted 500775 save where specified. E perf is 079900. The E7 is played as an E perfect with the D played on the A string (it's a bit of a stretch).

(Eperf)Sally (D)free and(Eperf)eas(Eperf, 7, then perf)y,
that should (D)be her (Eperf) name (E perfect, 7, then perf)
(next line the same chords)
Took a (ThumbyG) sailor's (Droot, followed by usual twiddle through the augmented) loving,
for a nu(ThumbyG)rs(D root)ery (E perfect)game

It's great to hear that voice again. Pity there are no moving pictures of the great man. There is another excellent version of the song on YouTube by the Jolly Rogers. The bloke in the middle looks a bit like Phil Beer.

An aside:
if Greg Stephens is reading this thread, I once promised to send you a version of this by The Zimm. Please contact me off-list if still interested.

I wouldn't hold your breath, though - it's only a few bars that follow on from some other studio piano blues ramble, cut while the mic was still on.
