There may be others out there on Mudcat who get their bins done on a Tuesday, we could form a club! Perhaps get discount for festival / concert tickets, maybe a secret handshake!

Perhaps you both have identical bins! Maybe you both have a binman called Andy! In fact you might sing some of the same songs.....play the same instruments......oh what fun it will be comparing ourselves with others....-perhaps a new thread for the purpose...Oh what a lovely life!

"We peaked tonight!"

So it seems Skipy! :-)

Now here's one for The Constitution.

On a Tuesday our bins are emptied at the back, but on a Wedneday, they're emptied from the front! Does this mean I can be Chairman/woman/person/chair?

We've a strange house which backs onto one road and fronts on to another. Now whether it's the same van, or the same crew, and whether they all play the banjo inbetween collections, who knows? But I could do some reconnaisance work...

Do you have to have Folkie Dustmen to join The Bin Club? I could get them into folk music you know, leave a few CDs out for them on top of the bins...they'd be 'fluent' in no time!

Just for that, I hope that all of you get stuck on the ride at Disneyland right in front of the Small World exhibit -- as I did! And you will hear, over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over

it's a world of laughter, a world or tears
its a world of hopes, its a world of fear
theres so much that we share
that its time we're aware
its a small world after all

CHORUS:
its a small world after all
its a small world after all
its a small world after all
its a small, small world

There is just one moon and one golden sun
And a smile means friendship to everyone.
Though the mountains divide
And the oceans are wide
It's a small small world

(chorus)

until you all go MAD!!! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I'm with BillD -- Monday rules. Tuesday people are short and squinty, as a rule, and suspiciously lax about having their rubbish collected, while we who have ours done on Mondays are obviously more punctilious. FUrthermore, people who wait until Tuesday obviously hate cleanliness, which is as we all know next t Godliness, and therefore must hate God as well. So for carefully considered devout religious reasons we should have nothing to do with them, and possibly declare war.

Nah, the quality have their bins done on Wednesdays, but only alternate weeks. On the Wednesday that the bins are not emptied we get to put out the recycling.

Just to drift a bit, our recycling is terribly picky; they accept waste paper including newspapers and envelopes, but not shredded paper, manila or window envelopes. Are all recyclers like this?

wot about those of us who live in the inner city surrounded by restaurants, cafes, bars & other places which need constant rubbish removal so we have our domestic rubbish removed 5 MORNINGS A WEEK!! & our PAPER RECYCLING wheelie bin emptied on Wednesdays, our GLASS RECYCLING wheelie bin emptied on Thursdays, & our PLASTICS RECYCLING wheelie bin emptied on Fridays. We can also arrange for large stuff to be collected separately several times a month!

Naturally the council pick up service is not enough for lots of very large businesses who arrange private collections, so we are always seeing (& hearing) private trucks rumbling & clanging around, one of the attractions of inner city life. Just looooove to be woken by the smashing of zillions of bottles in the early hours of the morning as the glass recycler throws bottles into his truck!

Can I join, or do I have to wait for others with similar collections to start a new club?

From: Janie

Jeri, where I live, there is a covered shed lined with shelves and a big floor area for larger items such as furniture at the transfer station where people can leave servicable items for others to take if they like - I'm guessing you have a simiar facility.

I can tell you why I might leave new clothes there, even with my limited budget - Some one (usually ma) bought me something that doesn't fit or I simply don't like, I move it around until I lose the receipt to return it, or the store is thirty miles away and I never shop there (I'm not much of a shopper, so even if it is 10 miles away I'm unlikely to be going there for something else). after a year I get tired of moving it around every time I dust or rearrange the closet, the yard sale I have been promising to have for 5 years still hasn't happened, and since I am not much of a shopper I also don't get around to taking it to the local charity thrift shop, I engage in some major cleaning or rearranging project that results in a load of stuff I have to take to the dump myself because the trash men won't take it, and since I'm going to the dump anyway, I take a look around the place, spy the 'new' clothes that are going to dry rot if they keep laying there much longer, think "Ah, recycle shed!", grab them, and finally get them out of my house and out of my way.

Sort of related comment....I have three different clients with meager incomes from disability who supplement their incomes by having monthly yard sales stocked with items they cull two times a week on a regular schedule from the local recycle shed.   Those extra, under-the-table couple of hundred bucks per month make a big difference in whether they eat and pay the heating bill or not. They have an informal agreement as to whose day it is to scavenge from the shed and rotate weekends when more stuff gets left than through the week, so that everyone gets a fair shot at the good stuff.

I have a friend in Montreal who furnished his apartment with stuff that was thrown out by folks. The furniture he picked up just by driving around some of the classier districts on garbage day is mind boggling. People toss away the darndest things.

He has a table that I'd estimate could sell for about $3000. He said he worked on it for about two weeks in evenings--three hours a night. So, figure he put about 40 hours into the restoration: $75 an hour ain't a bad wage.

Wednesdays 7 a.m. UK time. Wednesdays are my destiny. I have no wish to contrive allegiance to any other day, as it must have been ordained by the gods and in the stars that I am to be, forever, a Wednesday Collectee, and proud of it. Present address, previous address, and address before that, and before that.....right back to my earliest recollections ca. 1958, wherever I have lived, Wednesday is Dustbin Day. (Talk about a small world of coincidences, Skipy, beat that one, eh ??)

Such has been my devotion to Wednesdays that in my present house I now belong to the Select Elite in my town who are exempt from having to use official council wheelie bins and from the fortnightly alternating collections of recyclable and non-recyclable refuse. None of that for the Wednesday elite, oh no ! Our lane is too narrow for the large van, so we have a smaller one that visits weekly. We can put our bin bags out *every week*. Weekly collections......luxury.....fast disappearing in the UK.

Now, is it more elitist to have two collections on a Tuesday, or to have a collection alternate Tuesdays?
We have the general rubish and recyclables collected one Tuesday and the garden waste the next.
However, seeing as my wife parks next to the recycling bins at work we can recycle any weekday we want to!

In Newton Aycliffe collections are on a Tuesday, but re-cyclable items are only collected every other week. In Dunfermline, at least in our street, collection is on a Friday,BUT we alternate, weely, between blue bins for paper and cardboard and grey bins for general rubbish. We haven't used our brown bin yet as these are for garden waste. All tins, bottles and plastic containers are taken to a recycling point by myself. Who said rubbish was dull?

All of them want to reverse up my little cul-de-sac between 8 and 8.15 in the morning. I have to time my leaving for work very carefully. But it's fun watching them all trying to negotiate past each other at the top end.

Count me in. I can't be doing with these Mondayites! And as for Fridays - you don't get the quality, they're all in a rush to finish early for the weekend.

I feel a dump coming on now.

Peace, Mooh.

Pooh, Mooh. Every sAnE person here knows deep in his or her heart that Thursdays--the exact middle of the week--is the day for grabbage/grabidge/gardbige trash.

Wednesdays rule! Nyaaahhh!

Jeri, I would take my own refuse to the "transfer station" myself, but the fascist city officials don't allow it. We have to buy cheaply-made, overly expensive city trash bags and put them out. And us renters are doubly damned, we can't even get rid of stuff we have to pay to get rid of at the dump because renters aren't eligible for the stupid little punch card that must be presented (with accompanying proof of residence" when one arrives at the transfer station.

On Friday they pick up the trash spilled by those whose garbage is collected earlier in the week. Friday people are clean and so God-fearingly righteous that even their trash bins are clean on the Sabbath.

Exactly, and, as a bonus (well deserved) we have the weekend free. It makes sense that Friday is best!

Gol-ly whiz; our pickup day, in Michigan, USA, is also Tuesday. Skipy, what's the license plate number on the garbage truck that gets yours? I'll watch next time to see if ours is picked up by the same truck!

The way things are going in the UK there will soon be a special Garbage/rubbish club......those who can afford to have their rubbish collected....they will be an elite club on any day of the week.

My wife and I recycle, compost, or burn so much of our refuse that we only generate about one bag of hardcore garbage per month. It makes more sense for me to take my own garbage to the transfer station a few times a year than to pay the annual fee for pickup. The transfer station is closed on Sundays and Mondays, so I can go on any other day of the week.

So, since I'm not locked into a particular day of the week for garbage service, I'm free to join any garbage-pickup-day group I choose. It sounds like the Tuesday bunch would be a lot of fun, but I'm open to other days. If you'd really like me to be in your group, a generous cash contribution to my favorite charity, the "Buy Bee-dubya a New Dobro Fund", might influence my decision.
