I first came acrtoss him when he was effectively the 'house guitarist' in the Meeting Place in Dorset Street in Dublin in the late 70s and early 80s. He could play in virtually any style and was a great traditional, folk, slide, blues, rock and Jazz guitarist. He sat in with and recorded with many of the great names of the Irish music scene. Off the top of my head I can think of Christy Moore and Donal Lunny (Live in Dublin LP), Paul Brady, Freddie White, Red Peters Blues Band, Mairtin O Connor & Gary O Briain and hundreds of others. He was lead guitarist with the tragically short lived Hot Club Jazz outfit Hot Club which came to an abrupt end with the tragic death of Jimmy's long time collaborator bass player Declan McNeilis. It is a shame that Jimmy never got the level of fame and recognition that his talnt deserved. Jimmy will be sadly missed by music fans throughout Dublin and the rest of Ireland. I should also have mentioned Jimmy's grat work with Kieran Halpin. They made a CD togehter called Acoustic which is one of my personal favouriute contemporary folk albums. I think Jimmy also palyed on Christy's classic albums "Whatever Tickles your Fancy" and "The Iron behind the Velvet". I'm fairly sure it was Jimmy who provided the brilliant slide guitar on "The Sun is Burning" on the latter album. |

As far as I remember this was Paul Brady's first 'electric' band in his "post folk" era, put togrther to tour the "Hard Station" album. The line-up was fairly short lived. I'm not sure what age Jimmy was, but I think his fifties sounds right. |

Pat Farrel, Declan Mc Ginnis, Fran Breen, Redmond and Jimmy. I was probably one of the only non-"smoking" and non-drinking in the audience so perhaps my memories would stand up in court When Red took a well earned break it was Jimmys "chance" to stand centre stage and sing - not something he did too often. I think it was Imagine - but I stand corrected. What I will never forget are the duelling riffs between himself and Pat - two totally different styles but a fantastic sound. I can only imagine what this sounded like to the drinking and smoking community in the audience- I missed something perhaps. When I heard the news - yesterday 6 march - I checked out all the You tube links and of course it does not do him justice. I have some "snaps" of Jimmmy I took in the boat club in Clontarf last year after he played there but the qualtiy is nothing to write home about. I was very fortunate to stumble across an inpromptu gig @ The Grand Parade Hotel in Cork Jazz Festival around 1987. Mary Coughlan took a break and never came back............ this guy Jimmy Faulkner stepped up and played with the band - drifting far from jazz and into many excellent covers which of course were completely unrehearsed but made for one of the most memorable gigs I've ever had the pleasure of seeing. The great Robbie Brennan was on drums that night........ I'm just glad to be able to say I got to see "The Master"................. Thanks giving me the memory that I'll cherish forever! |

From: GUEST,Jimi Slevin I never worked with Jimmy, but have met him on many occasions over the years, and we've spoken, laughed and swapped yarns on many's the occasion. Jimmy was simply a great guy and superb musician. He effortlessly embraced and mastered many diverse styles and added the master's touch to countless fine studio productions. He even successfully tackled that Django Reinhardt Gypsy Swing style with the wonderful 'Hotfoot' back in the '80s. What a great little combo they were, and I'll never forget those smoky, Guinnessy nights in the Baggot with Jimmy's powerful, mused playing ringing through the rafters! In my opinion Jimmy Faulkner was more that just a nice guy and great guitarist who will be sadly missed. He was a major talent. |

Jimmy played a lot in the Lobby with Kieran Halpin,Mick Hanley,Mairtin O'Connor,Frankie Lane,Pete Cummins, Niall O'Callanain and Eugene Brosnan. It was always great to see his magic playing close up and chat with him after gigs.P.J. Curtis did a 30 minute radio interview with him in the early 80's and he would be the ideal man to write the biography. Over to you P.J.! |

Reading through it again brings back many happy memories of listening to Jimmy. It was difficult to be unhappy when you were listening to him. There was a great tribute concert held in memory of Jimmy in the Olympia Theatre in Dublin last September. It was a great night and the line-up on stage reflected the esteem that Jimmy was held in by those who were lucky enough to have heard him or worked with him. It would be great if this could be an annual event. |

I have lived in Australia for 24 years now and only just found out about Jimmy's passing. Back in Dublin in the 70's I never missed a Red Peters Floating Blues Band Sunday session at the Meeting Place and used to live at the Baggot Inn and remember those truly great days of fun, great music, Guiness and lots of hows your Father. When himself, Red, Declan and the others got going at the Meeting place - it was dynamite, tiny stage that it was. Witnessed moments of some of the best blues playing I can ever remember. Jimmy was as well known and respected face around the Dublin music scene and I admit I used to fancy the knickers off him and his gorgeous smile - with no success mind you. Vale Jimmy - thank you for the soaring riffs, the great times and the great music. May your spirit rise and watch over the rest of the blues gang to make sure they keep in tune. Sincere condolences to Pauline and family - I am sure that you miss him so much. |

The gig was filmed by Se Merry Doyle, an award winning film maker according to Hot Press magazine. His company is called Loopline. I contacted him and he says he filmed it on spec and hoped to get some finance together to do something with it. That was shortly after the gig though so he mustn't have had any luck.. |

Sundays with Red was a mind-blowing(!) experience for me as an 18 year old. Turn Around, Caledonia, Spotlight,That's alright Mama...I still remember all the words. The crowd going nuts for more, the guitar sparring with Pat Farrell, the thunder of Fran Breens drums and the faces he pulled. Part of the soundtrack of my youth. For that alone I am grateful. But Jimmy was more than that. He had a great sense of humour and sometimes he only had to say a couple of words to have the audience laughing especially when he was ordering drinks from the stage. He was one of the most versatile guitar players I've ever seen. The stuff he did with Hotfoot was note perfect against Pat Collins fiddle with Jimmy Gibson providing rhythm. I saw some of the very early Hotfoot gigs in the Meeting Place when there was only a few in attendance. With the two Jimmys and Pat it just had to work and of course it did. I was lucky enough to have been at some of the recording of Christy Moores live in Dublin album...still great. The turnout for his tribute in the Olympia says it all. He was held in such high esteem and affection by thousands. He was a legendary guitar player and he was a nice man. Rest in Peace. I hope you're in heaven and Jesus and the saints are jumpin'. The world is a lesser place without you. |
