Louisville fun?

I have to go to a wedding in Louisville this weekend. Is there anyone who can recommend amusement for a traveler there? What's worthwhile? I'll only have a bit of time, but no sense wasting it!

Hi, Cara. I just called my son's pseudo-spouse (they live just across the Ohio from Louisville and both work in Louisville) who gave me these suggestions for you:

She said Churchill Downs Racetrack is more fun than anybody would ever believe. (And they are NOT the type I would ever think would go there!) It's only $2 to get in, she said you take $40 and have a great meal and it's a lot of fun.

Also on Friday nights there is always a free concert at Riverfront Park, where there is a new really nice park. She thinks it's 10,000 Maniacs this week, but not sure, and it's FREE!

The locals who are in the know, take picnics to the Cave Hill Cemetary, which is vast and old, and she said it's the kind of place, if you spend four hours and get ready to leave, you'll be sad at how much of it you didn't get to see. (Col. Sanders, of KFC, is buried there!:-)

Also, May 22 at the Twice-Told Coffee Shop on Barstown Road, in the "hip" area, will feature John Wesley Harding. They also offer "bottomless" cups of iced coffee.

Hope this gives ya some ideas.

Off of Dixie Highway about 35 miles south of Louisville is an old stagestop called the Doe Run Inn. It was built in the late 1700's, and sits right by a beautiful creek. Makes a real nice dinner outing.

Louisville (Loovale) is one of the dearest cities I know. I want to use this time to say that. They are wonderful folks there. On the riverfront there is great places to eat (oh God help me here) but there is a marvelous place in the east end that used to be a feed store (Karen, forgive me sugar!) Also home to the Louisville Slugger, baseball bat. That's downtown, you can't miss it because there is a 110 foot one leaning against a building. Take my word for it, Louisville is a nice town to visit, wonderful folks. Enjoy your visit and don't forget to inquire about "thunder". I will be there next year for that, I swear!

Best kind of food in Louisville is not haute' cuisine- it's Fried fish sandwiches, with beer, hush puppies and a couple pan-fried oysters on the side. I'm getting tears in my eyes just thinkin about it.

Go down to Mike Linnigs on River Road. Sit there in the beer garden, have a fish sammich and a brew, then wander over the hill down to the Ohio River and watch the fireflies drift over the water, while a barge moans like a spirit from down around the bend. You will thank me.
