25 Years Ago Today Stan Rogers Died

I tried to start a thread on this earlier but the clones combined it with another current one. I understand Joe why you want to keep it all tidy but I fear that the signifucance of the day is being lost. The earlier thread dealt with a radio tribute but it didn't explain why it was broadcast at this time.
25 years ago today we lost one of the greatest singer/songwriters who ever lived. Stan still lives in his music but I wonder what he would have done if he were still alive. Rest in peace!

Paul Mills (Stan's producer) did a fine house concert, with some of Stan's songs, in Toronto this past Saturday.

Hard to believe it is 25 years already. And his songs are still being sung in many Countries. Thanks for posting this Sandy.

Missed, yes, but we still have his brother, his son, and his music. No further tribute is needed.

His brother, Garnet is great and our star for this year's first Apple Hollow Music Fest.

I keep rediscovering Stan. I'll hear a song and say, "WOW!" and then find out that Stan wrote it. Then I'll say, "Figgers -- it sounds like something he'd do."

An outstanding singer/songwriter. No question about it.

His songs will be sung as long as there is singing.

Stan Rogers' last flight..... on YouTube.
"Stan died aboard the AC flight after it safely landed at Cincanatti International Airport, June 02,1983. He and others never had time to get off the plane, we lost a great man, but his music lives on...."

In some ways, Stan's death only seems a short while ago, but for a young person just getting into folk music it must seem like ancient history. Or put another way, as remote as Robert Johnson seemed to me when I first got into folk and blues in the mid-1960s.

When Nathan comes to England next year lets be there, I have heard him live and he has a very good voice!

I'm sorry I did not know much about Stan Rogers when I heard the news, we had not really got into the folk scene in Canada having moved from UK to Montreal in 77 and to Ontario in 79 with two kids we didn't arrive with.
So one of the first things I recollect strongly was the news of his death.
It was more significant for myself at the time as it was a DC9 aircraft which crashed and I worked for McDonnel Douglas, the manufacturer.
I can say though it wasn't one which I had anything to do with building.
I have learned a lot more about Stan and know more of his songs than before his death, pity that's what it took.

Sandy,

I would wager that if Stan were still alive, there would be a pile of DC's and songs. As excellen and prolific as his brother Garnet is, I would think Stan would have been even greater. I hardly knew his work before he died, yet I still miss him. I have a gig coming up next week and there are too many "tribute" song possibilities. The longer we live, the more people we will know who have passed on.

Big RiB

No particular need to compare Stan with Garnet. Garnet's his own man. As for the son - I heard it said a few years back that he was hoping to make it on his own merits, and to avoid being billed as "Son of ... ".

As for Stan - truly an original. A great talent gone far too soon.

Right on about Garnet and Nathan, both fine talents in their own right. I did not mean to make them mere acolytes. If Stan were here, he'd be cheering them on as well.
