I hope this is how you do this???

Capo 4 in G (G/D) or (C/D)
 G
It was a teenage wedding and the old folks wished them well.
D
You could see that Pierre did truly love the mademoiselle

And now the young monsieur and madame have rung the chapel bell.
G
"Ç'est la vie," say the old folks. "It goes to show you never can tell."
They furnished off an apartment with a two-room Roebuck sale.
The coolerator was crammed with TV dinners and ginger ale
But when Pierre found work, the little money coming worked out well.
"Ç'est la vie," say the old folks. "It goes to show you never can tell."

They had a hi-fi phono. Boy, did they let it blast!
Seven hundred little records, all rock, rhythm, and jazz.
But when the sun went down, the rapid tempo of the music fell.
"Ç'est la vie," say the old folks. "It goes to show you never can tell."

They bought a souped-up jitney. 'Twas a cherry-red fifty-nine.
They drove it down to New Orleans to celebrate their anniversary.
It was there that Pierre was wedded to the lovely mademoiselle.
"Ç'est la vie," say the old folks. "It goes to show you never can tell."

You could see that Pierre did truly love the mademoiselle.
And now the young monsieur and madame have rung the chapel bell.

Thanks for posting those, oombanjo.

I have a tape of Emmylou Harris doing this song, but I think Chuck Berry wrote it, didn't he?

Bob Seger does a great version of this as well! Except I thought it was officially called C'est La Vie (You Never Can Tell)

Thanks, oombanjo, for those lyrics and chords.

A small but kind of important correction to the lyrics posted above. The French phrase is "Ç'est la vie," not "Cest la vie." It's a contraction of "Ça est" ("It" or "That" and "is").

Nick Lowe wrote a very good song called "I knew the bride" which is a dead ringer for the Chuck Berry classic.

I Knew the Bride -Rockpile

Great song but perhaps a bit lucky not to be sued!

You never can tell
when you go to sit
where the man in the balconey's
gonna spit.

Well - that's the way my mum tells it.

Long live Chuck,
IMHO the biggest ( and best ) influence on popular music in Britain - the Beatles loved him and his music
Cheers Betsy

I've always liked that one. It's written in the third person, which could help to make it a folk song in time. As a cheerful, optimistic song, it's always been one of my favourites. To my mind Chuck Berry was the wittiest and most articulate of all of that first wave of R&R songwriters.
