Terribly sad news. The Spinners were my introduction to folk music (as is the case with so many people) and Cliff gave them an added dimension.
He will be missed very much indeed. RIP

Yes indeed. It became fashionable to sneer at the Spinners, but they introduced so many to folk music. I owe them all a huge debt for what became a lifelong passion. I moved on to what I thought of at the time as more "serious" folk, but looking back they were very good indeed.

RIP

I worked with the Spinners in the early days of the revival. Cliff was a gentle man and a pleasure to know. The Spinners did a great deal to open the minds of the general public to a music they were not used to hearing, thereby opening avenues for those of us starting out on the road of making a living from our music. It has never been fashionable with me to mock their contribution.

How sad. I loved the Spinners and Cliff always seemed to be such a gentle man, with a beautiful voice.

Rest in peace Cliff.

Sad news indeed! For me, too, they were the introduction to British folk music. Although I never managed to see them live, I have a dozen of their albums. Cliff seemed to bring a quiet kind of humour to their make-up, quite apart from being a lovely singer and a gentle person. RIP, Cliff.

Does anyone know of a source online which might have some sound files? I am sure I must've heard them at some time, but at first I thought this was about the American band by the same name, different genre.

Sorry to hear of the loss of another good musician and man.

I may be wrong but few of us in the States were aware of the Spinners as individuals. It was our loss. A couple of years ago I was introduced to Hughie Jones in Liverpool by Ken Lardner of Chantey Cabin and realized that I had missed out on a whole era of nautical singing.

As long as people remember, Cliff Hall isn't gone. That is the true mark of respect.

My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Anyone can visit The Spinners Fan Club Site at
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com.

I had the pleasure of meeting The Spinners in Liverpool when I lived there for a time in 1976 and again in 1979. The Lads are all "smashing" blokes. I appreciated their music, then, and now. Their live performances were filled with good-natured humor and leap-frogged time, distance and cultures.

Each one of The Lads has a special place in my heart as I got to know them as friends. Cliff and his first wife, Janet, invited me into their home for dinner. Cliff had a 1956 Gibson hanging on the wall. It matched my own 1956 Gibson. We sat around, chatting, you'd never guess that he was the same man who, earlier that night, sang at The Liverpool Philharmonic Hall in a televised concert for millions.

That dear, sweet, gentle man shall be missed.

Cliff Hall, RIP

Absolout bloody travesty that they never got a lifetime award from the BBC. Can't think of any group that deserved it more.

Just seen in the Liverpool Daily Post of the death yesterday of Cliff Hall aged 83 in Adelaide, Australia. There's an article nearly filling p3 and an obituary on p9. Can't seem to find it at their website
though.

Cliff was born in 1925 and came to England from Jamaica in 1942 to join the RAF, worked as an electrician in the 50s and met Tony Davis. In 1958 they joined Hughie Jones and Mick Groves to form The Spinners, who survived till 1988. Their influence on the English folk revival was incalculable.

He married three times and was twice widowed and had three children.

When the roll is called up yonder....

Very sad news. I echo most of what has been said above. I'm not sure that Cliff and the Spinners have ever really been properly recognised for the (in my opinion) massive contribution they made to the spreading of 'folk' music and song to the general public. I have often said that they were the only group i know who could turn a sell out Manchester Free Trade Hall into a folk club for the night. I'm sure that was the same with the Phil too.

Because of Cliff's background, great voice, musicianship and gentlemanly approach, he added a great dimension to the music. Condolences to his family.

Sad news indeed. I knew him and the other Spinners for many years and always enjoyed the friendship. Cliff was great to talk to and as earier posted, his music added another dimension to the group repertoire. The Spinners were hugely influential, they spread the word of folk music to thousands of people who might not have heard it otherwise. I totally agree with the posting from Silas.
Goodbye and Rest in Peace Cliff. You leave many good memories behind you.

Our consolation is that he is in the arms of the Great Mother, will know the smile of the All Father, and be in good company.

Rest in peace - requiescat in pace, Cliff.

Condolences to his family.

Indeed a very sad time for Spinners fans of old. I recently saw Mick Groves who mentioned that Cliff was unwell. I was but a lad in the seventies when i found the Spinners and they inspired my in Folk music and sill keep me enthused to this day. I still have spinners CD's in my car and play then regularly.

My heart gors out to Dorothy and his family and the rest of the Spinners who must be terribly saddened at this news.

Have just returned from 2 weeks in Cornwall to hear of this very sad news. I was lucky to know the Spinners for over 25 years and often travelled with them to gigs etc. Cliff was the most genuine person you could wish to meet. My last meeting with him was a few years ago before he went to Australia, to intoduce him to Linda, my bride to be. We had a lovely day with Cliff and although he couldn't make our wedding gave a wonderful limited edition print which we both treasure.

Rest in peace Cliff, you will never be forgotton.

He was a great man and a fine folkie, but also a (probable unwitting) pioneer of the fact that racialism is a crazy concept.

He was a good man, as indeed are all the Spinners.
They have left a fine, friendly musical legacy following their end as a group in 1988.
Their club was a fine place to play.

I saw the Spinners at the Fairfield Halls in Croydon a couple of times in the early 70's. I enjoyed their humour and banter with each other and the audience.

I remember that when they were singing 'Twas pleasant and delightful' when it game to "bound for the East Indies" Cliff would say "West Indies". It always drew a great laugh.

They gave a lot of enjoyment to a lot of people.. now that cant be bad.

RIP CLiff

I knew Cliff and Dorothy for such a short time in terms of "The Spinners", but they took me to themselves and their family so easily and without pomp. I had known of "The Spinners" and had followed their music for years in the UK, never knowing that I would meet Cliff here in Adelaide. To meet him and to get to know him and Dorothy over the years has been a privilege that I shall treasure for the rest of my life.
