Peter & Gavin Livingstone

I have been making jam this evening (blackcurrant, before you ask) and playing old cassettes. (The CD player is knackered).
I pulled out a 6 track cassette from 1981, made by Peter and Gavin Livingstone, called Quiddity. The final track is painful, but the other 5 are still very good listening. I bought the tape off them at the Argyll Folk Festival at Lochgilphead in '81, having seen them play. I have never heard of them since. Anyone out there know of them?

I saw them in Ullapool years ago, and got invited to play concertina on their spoof English folk song 'I've lost me way to Maidenhead'. They also had a song with the chorus: "If I can't get to heaven, the next best place is Leith", and did a cover of "Dora the Female Explorer". A mixture of acoustic instruments and synths - a lot of fun.

Thanks Brian.
They seemed to have so much going for them musically (if the fiddle is left out of the equation!). Maybe they got fed up and called it a day.

Peter now resides in Denmark apparently and Gavin still performs in Scotland. I last saw him as part of MIrK a few years ago.

Spoke to Gavin about six weeks ago, at a Mick West concert. Nice guy! (With an equally nice wife and mother-in-law thrown in.) He's still playing in his spare time, but I forget which band he's in. He used to perform with his brother as a duo, Tonight at Noon, when Peter was over from Denmark. Saw them at the Glasgow folk club roughly ten years back, and can confirm Irene's view.

I did a Google search and came up with the Fylde promo stuff too. I got the impression Gavin had moved on to sound engineering, but am glad to hear he is still performing.

I met these lads many, many years ago, when I shared a night with them at Ron Gardner's club at the Silver Thread in Paisley, in 1979 or '80 - I was there twice. They provided the PA, which they had built themselves, and it sounded great. In fact I thanked them from the stage at the end of the night - something I've only done twice in 40 years, the other being for Silly Wizard's sound man at Chester Folk Festival, probably in 1980; that was in a marquee - no prior sound check, he simply came up on stage at the beginning of our (the Wakes) spot, checked with us about one or two of our various instruments, set up the mikes and went away and got on with the job. After the problems we'd had with other sound systems at the festival, it was a joy. And all with just a pair of Bose speakers.
Similar experience with Peter & Gavin, although in a different situation. Seems as though at least some Scots know how these things work, even if a lot of English sound men don't...
Where's me coat gone?...
