*big grin*.... Ok, Vince. You asked for it! Now they'll be flying in from all over the world to settle the "what is folk" question...fortunately for me, it's only 5 minutes drive.

Damn! You mean I have to pick something obvious and familiar? I sound better to folks when they have nothing or nobody to compare me to.....

Does Quint-essential mean we go five times around?

If we can't find one, can we write one?

Will you post the set list and/or let the Catters pick a winner or winners if we actually finally SOLVE the question?

Will Wincing Devil go down in history like a red-nosed reindeer? Or at least become Folklore? Or will Vince prove vincible while we only end up with Vint-essential folksongs? The usual solution reached at these discussions/arguments in these searches is "Cuz I said So!" and he, after all, is the host, and of chorus, I'll refrain from casting any aspersions......

Hell! It should be Francis James Child's play to the likes of the FSGW!

The answer, as always, of course, is "Blowing In The Wind" (It used to be "Love"). ......What was the question again?

I hope we're not pissing in the wind....

If we can't actually solve, may we all be absolved.....

"If we can't find one, can we write one?"

Oh, sure...but you can't sing it for at least 75 years, and then only if everyone else knows it.

Seriously, Vince, you're a brave, brave man, seemingly and seamlessly dreaming the impossible dream, but proceed to tilt away in the pinball game of folklife until all those windmills look like the Tower of Pisa, and if and when you DO come up with the actual answer, may you be knighted, and if not, we'll all call it a knight anyway and wait for the next Mudcat "Thread Of Dread"* and all resume The Glorious Quest.

GO FOR IT!!!!!!

*Not to be confused with the also Dreaded "What Is Reggae Music?" discussion, where they Babylon and on as well.

I know that if we get 20 folks, and do two laps, we'll end up with 40 definitions. I'm stressing that there is no one definition, it's like you view of GIBTU (Guiding Intelligence Behind the Universe), highly subjective and personal. If Folks Sing it, It's a Folk Song! (Ever heard "Baby got Back" done as a soulful ballad? I have!)

Is there a limit on the number of verses or time to complete said folk song?
Are scrolls allowed?
This could be worth the trip...

You sing as many verses as you want until you can't stand the baleful glances. And some of these folks can be MIGHTY baleful!

SINSULL,

Bring a cotton-pickin' bale-full of verses worthy of our glances to overcome our glaring weaknesses. Let any strange looks just glance off of you and proceed with your agenda. WincingDevil doesn't care if we sing all night. Anyplace he falls is home. Sing the collected adventures of Robin and The Boys In The Hood if you want to, but do as much of it as you can by memory. This lot of story-hounds doesn't mind an overstuffed ballad box as long as you can leave an indellible sustain on their interest.

Keep in mind, though, as the late Dick Rodgers would tell you, they'll burn scrolls in mid-performance (especially if you hit a dead C or are murder on the high ones), but as we all know too well, memories, much like an alchohol lamp, can only burn out, however temporarily, from within. Bless all our wicked souls!

We'd love to see you.....

In fact we DARE you to come down!
