I'm trying to find anyone who might know a Christmas tune about a young boy and an old woman sharing a meager Xmas dinner . I belive its called "By Candlelight" the only part I remember goes : the most wonderful Christmas dinner was shared by candlelight , not much to go on but if anyone can help I'd be forever grateful Thanks

Greg549 posted a request for this on another thread. I will steer him here. His request reads:

Roger - That's one of my favorite Christmas songs - I learned it from a Peter Paul and Mary record, it might be in the songbook I have at home if you need guitar chords. Here are the words - let me know if you plan to sing it in the Baltimore area and I'll come to hear it - I can't sing it myself without choking up.

And it came to pass on that Christmas evening
When all the doors were shuttered tight
Outside standing, lonely boy child
Cold and shivering in the night

Through other windows he had looked at turkeys
And ducks and geese and cherry pies
But through this window saw a grey-haired lady
Table bare and tears in her eyes

Into his pocket reached the boy child
Knowing well there was little there
He took from his pocket his own Christmas dinner
A bit of cheese and some bread to share

His outstretched hands held the food and they trembled
As the door it opened wide
Said he, "Would ye share in me Christmas dinner?"
Gently said she, "Come inside"

The grey-haired lady brought forth to the table
Glasses filled with her last drop of wine
Said she "Here's a toast to everyone's Christmas,
And especially yours and mine"

And it came to pass on that Christmas evening
When all the doors were shuttered tight
That in that town, the happiest Christmas
Was shared by candlelight

I am glad I took a look at this thread. It is not "period" but I would really like to use this this winter at my run at "Dicken's Christmas". I suspect I am going to have to practice this one a lot in order to get through without choking...

Apparently, the song is a Noel Paul Stookey original. Click here to get to the lyrics at the Peter, Paul and Mary home page.

Darn it all, I just got kicked off the computer at the Denver Public Library. They say they don't allow e-mail or chat rooms. I said this is neither, but they don't buy it. 'Bye....

Thank you again Susan-Marie!

Joe, you should offer to have them try the Mudcat at the Library. Mine did and some of them come on every now and again.

The second verse is missing from the post above, so I'll post the "official" lyrics from the Peter, Paul, and Mary Website:
CHRISTMAS DINNER
Noel Paul Stookey- Neworld Media Music Publishers ASCAP

And it came to pass on a Christmas evening
While all the doors were shuttered tight
Outside standing, a lonely boy-child
Cold and shivering in the night.

On the street every window
Save but one was gleaming bright
And to this window walked the boy-child
Peeking in saw candlelight.

Through other windows he had looked at turkeys
And ducks and geese and cherry pies
But through this window saw a gray-haired lady
Table bare and tears in her eyes.

Into his coat reached the boy-child
Knowing well there was little there
He took from his pocket his own Christmas dinner
A bit of cheese, some bread to share.

His outstretched hands held the food and they trembled
As the door it opened wide
Said he "Would you share with me Christmas dinner?"
And gently said she "Come inside."

The gray-haired lady brought forth to the table
Some glasses to their last drop of wine
Said she "Here's a toast to everyone's Christmas,
And especially yours and mine!"

And it came to pass on that Christmas evening
While all the doors were shuttered tight
That in that town the happiest Christmas
Was shared by candlelight.
