RogerDavies+WendyArrowsmith&BS KFFC- 20 Sept

21 Aug 08 - 12:10 PM (#2419507)
Subject: RogerDavies+WendyArrowsmith&BS KFFC20/9
From: Banjiman

Next club night at KFFC will feature rising star singer/ songwriter Roger Davies (he sold out The Black Swan in York a couple of weeks ago amongst many other places).

Described thus "The best I've seen in 20 years. If I had a torch I'd throw it to him." by Harvey Andrews no less. Even my 7 year old son like him!

Hear him here

Personally I really like his stuff..... a great YOUNG songwriter.

Support is homegrown: Wendy Arrowsmith & Blind Summat! That's Wendy on Vocals, Guitar, Accordion (really!), Whistle , Mandolin & Percussion.
Joolz Cavell on Vocals, Guitar, Congas and other percussion
Rebekah Findlay on Vocals & Fiddle (and maybe guitar) and ME on Vocals and 5 string banjo. Occaisional additional guitar from our soundman, Lee.

Mainly upbeat stuff and also a truly great (in my humble opinion) version of The Cruel Mother.....without banjo obviously and not upbeat either.

Debut gig for this full line up is at the Osmotherley Gathering, no full band recordings available yet but you can hear Wendy
Here .

Full details here.

Paul

Apologies Mr. Banjiman as we can't make it - we're playing the first of our Village Hall gigs at Wolsingham Town Hall that night.

...I'm sure it will be fab though.

All the best,
Graeme,
Brother Crow.

Just pluggin' away in the hope that someone who hasn't seen this suddenly goes, wow! what else could I do with my Saturday night except go and see Roger AND Wendy and Blind Summat!

You can now see/ hear full band recordings of Blind Summat!
here
and here.

I don't know, give myself a gig (first time a KFFC, yes I am a member of Blind Summat!) and no one wants to come. That'll teach me!!!!

Roger was great at the Topic in Bradford a couple of weeks ago so don't miss him if you are near KFFC - must look on the map to see where that is! Too far from Bradford for a night out I fear.

Joe,

Just less than an hour from Bradford....if you're driving. A very easy drive as well as it is just off the A1.

had a couple more come out of the woodwork tonight, so should be a few in anyway.

How does it feel to have been in the company of the legend? - as Roger would say ~(tongue firmly in cheek)!

I don't think he minded too much being in the company of a legend.....oh sorry you meant Roger is the legend!!!

Seriously, excellent night....we all thoroughly enjoyed Roger as we knew we would. He is destined for greatness, his songs are just so catchy and with that complete ring of truth.

Shame that we couldn't get more in to enjoy it (20....the lowest ever attendance for KFFC)that is despite distributing 700 flyers (at folk events and to all the local villages), local radio coverage etc.

We also did the support ourselves to try and get a few more in. Last time Wendy played the village hall we had 80 in and last time she played the club, 65..... don't know what else we can do really?

I guess we could stick with the safe "old guard" guests, you know those who have been doing the club circuit for years but are a guaranteed draw....kind of goes against the ethos of the club though.

Club funds can't take many more nights with last nights sort of attendance. I have acts booked until March......(Dave Gibb on FRIDAY 17th October, Big Birthday Bash 0n w/e 22nd Nov,with D McF, Mary Haumphreys & Anahata etc, etc, Vicky Swan and Johnny Dyer on Dec 13th, Brother Crow in Jan, WWW with Sara Grey, Zoox, Sarah McQuaid etc in Feb and the Young 'uns in March) but I am going to postpone booking any more acts until I see what attendance is like for the rest of the year. Let's hope last night was just a quirk, there were a number of the regulars who had other places they needed to be, we'll see.

Paul

Hi Paul

Glad you enjoyed it. Shame about the low numbers - we are having the same problem at the Topic - we only got a small number in for Bob Fox a little while ago and though we have moved to an excellent new venue the numbers are still disappointing. The quandry of established acts or newcomers is a tough one - personally speaking it can be a bit boring seeing some of the same old people ( a small number of whom are possibly past their sell by date) so I would encourage perservering with the newcomers otherwise we won't have a a folk scene in the future.

Good luck in the future anyhow

Thanks Joe......I hoe you'll be at The Topic on January 15th (My Birthday!!) for Wendy's gig!

If you ever do fancy KFFC we can always find people a bed for the night.

Cheers

Should be there

And thanks for the kind offer - this not being able to drive for more than about 20 mins at night without being dangerous is a right pain! Especially if it rains! Even Otley Folk Club is out of bounds for me now which is a real shame.

Just returned from a day visit to Otley FF - Kefruffle and CBS were stellar - but otherwise it seemed a bit quiet.

Shame about the low attendance - it seems to be a growing problem at a number of folk clubs.

It will be harder for KKFC as they only meet once per month, and have to pay "fees" to hire the village hall now following the closure of the pub.

At Croxdale Folk Club, guests are booked once per month, but of course, the club is held weekly and though there is no entry charge on these nights, the raffle held to supplement the income (or lack of) on "guest" nights. It seems to work.

We took the chance and hired Wolsingham Town Hall to play at that night - we got a good few in, but out audiences wouldn't have crossed over as all our attendees were from the village. I wouldn't like to risk it on a regular basis, as the locals had heard of us, but it can be difficult appealing to a "non-folk" crowd when you put someone on who is perhaps a big name in the folk world, but unknown to the locals.

Best of luck Paul, and I hope you are able to make it work out...we support your ethos wholeheartedly.

Graeme,
Brother Crow.
