John has just sent me a new page for his website - all about his history as a folksinger.

His site is to be found here:-

This is an edited PermaThread® for folk musician John Kelly, intended to provide performance schedules and other information about his work and performances. This thread will be edited by weelittledrummer. Feel free to post to this thread, but remember that all messages posted here are subject to editing or deletion.

John dropped into the club at the Scrag End, Oakthorpe, Leicestershire recently.

It was rather comical because the organiser mistook him for the guest, John Conolly, who had been held up and arrived late. He won't live it down for a long time.

In fact, John did an excellent support slot which went down very well. I don't run a club myself but think, from what I heard, that he is well worth a booking.

I saw John a while back this year. He dropped in to clubs at Arundel and Chiddingly in Sussex, while on his way back from a festival. He's an excellent musician and plays and sings some beautiful songs on his portable preacher's harmonium. (It is a portable preacher's harmonium, isn't it, John? Correct me if I'm wrong). Highly recommended!

That John Kelly is going on the road in England, in winter, in a tent - to be a folksinger.

Watch this space - it could be an eventful thread!

You heard it here first - Gainsborough in Linolnshire in October, where the east wind from Russia sweeps across the Northern Tundra, and only his beard to keep him warm!

6th October. Skipton Acoustic Folk Club. The Narrow Boat, Victoria St.
24/25th October. Gainsborough Folk Festival.
21st November. The Pack Horse. Loughborough.

Just catching up here!
Acorn: That mix-up was partly my fault. When I phoned Dave to ask about a floor spot, he did mention that John Connolly was on, but I'd forgotten. So when he met me and asked "are you John?", I, naturally, said "yes"... There are worse people I could be mistaken for. I hadn't seen John Connolly before, but enjoyed his performance - very entertaining, and a nice bloke too. Dave has been in touch since, to book me for 2010. I'm in the area before that though; at the Pack Horse in Loughborough on 21st November this year.
Will: I don't think I've heard the collapsible armonium I play described as a 'preacher's harmonium', but they were - maybe still are - used by the Army for field services, and on ships; some people call them 'ship's organs'. And I think the Salvation Army used them for street hymn-singing. Somebody told me they were used by travelling medicine shows. And now folksingers... The hand-pumped Indian harmonium is said to have been developed from instruments introduced by missionaries, but I think that may have been the harmoniflute, otherwise known as a lap-organ.
As Al says, I will be on the road soon, living in a tent. I will be travelling all over mainland Britain for the next year or so, doing promotional floor spots at as many clubs as I can, so there'll be no escape! I'll be posting plans and news here. I should be around North Yorkshire next month, and Midlands in November.
See Yiz. JK

So post here or PM me or John if you want John at your club doing a floorspot. John is anxious to claim his birthright as a legend of the folkscene ASAP.

You can help, hear some good folkmusic, and help keep the main arteries of the folk revival uncongested and away from people who couldn't spot the difference between a load of ballads and a load of bollocks.

This man may yet save folk music!

As to the harmonium ... there is an original folding harmonium from the First World War at Talbot House in Flanders. Rev Tubby Clayton used it in the trenches around Wipers. If you want further information PM me.

Well, that's it; I am now on the road. I am currently in Beverley - in the library to be precise (they're marked on the A-Z maps; another reason to use maps rather than the dreaded satnav....).
I didn't get time to post this before I left, but here's my current itinerary of promotional spots/bookings:
Started on Monday 21st October at Beverley. Tonight,(Wed. 23rd, I'm in Cottingham. tomorrow, Thurs. 23rd, The Cutty Wren, Skelton.
Then I'm appearing at Gainsborough Festival, 24th/25th. There's a half-hour spot on Friday night and one on Saturday afternoon. Then I have to dash over to Manchester for a wedding reception with Flaxmere Band.
Sunday 26th: back up North, loaded with cash (ha-ha-ha!), and a floor spot on Sunday at Guisborough (Rugby Club). Monday 27th is The Forrester's Folk Club (Coatham Mundeville). Tuesday 28th, Croxdale, and Wednesday 29th Birtley.
I haven't organised any more, but might be doing some more spots in the Durham/Teesside area before heading back across country. I've ended up with a load of stuff in the van which I wasn't intending to have with me; It just ended up that way in the chaos. So I need to sort that out. apart from anything else, there's always the chance that, at this time of the year, I'll need to sleep in the back of the van (or The Tour Bus, as I like to call it). I can't get in there at the moment without taking half the stuff out. On Monday, having had numerous hold-ups during the day, I got here so late that I ended up sleeping in the front, which was not what you might call comfortable. (I could call it a few things, but it would probably get the thread closed and me banished from Mudcat). Not sure what's happening during the first week or so in November, but I'm at the Pack Horse in Loughborough on 21st, so I'll be doing promo stuff in the Midlands during the week before.
See you roud the houses, as Sean Cannon once said.
John Kelly.

Sorry I've not been keeping up; life has got in the way these last few months. I haven't been inactive, but haven't got around to putting my activities on here. I didn't see this thread popping up last week. Hello Tom and Clive. No, I haven't left the country (yet!), and haven't had any emails from Clive. That's got me wondering if I've missed emails from other people. Mike Linden told me a couple of years ago that he'd just received an amail sent out six months previously, so I suppose it's early days.... I'll PM you.
Anyway. Some imminent dates. Actually, I've just done the Frodsham club last Friday. That one was hush-hush, as it was Roger Bond's surprise 80th birthday party, so it couldn't be advertised as a guest night.
This Friday, 27th November: Bayfolk (The Dolphin), Robin Hood's Bay, North Yorkshire.
Sunday, 29th November: Guisborough Folk Club (Rugby Club), Cleveland.
Friday, 4th Decamber: Seaford Folk Club (I need to check the venue).
Sunday, 6th December: Horsham Folk Club (Normandy Centre), West Sussex.
Thursday, 10th December: Raise The Roof (Red Deer), Sheffield.
Thursday, 14th January: Fleetwood Folk Club (The Steamer), Lancashire.
I'll be doing some promo floor spots in between, but am only just thinking about where!
I'll just go and check the Seaford venue......JK

I tried to pass messages on via a couple of Mudcatters, but still haven't made contact. I'll have another go over the next few weeks, or else I'll turn up at the club one night and do a floor spot. The club (Chorlton) holds the record for CD sales - 10 on one night (there being about 30 people in the room), which is not bad for an obscure singer of old somgs...

I'll nudge him again next time I'm down.

The trouble with Chorlton these days is that it's too popular - Joe can pack it out week after week, just by letting people get up and do one number, so I guess he doesn't see the need to book many artists. Shall I tell him you'll do your Dylan set?

I really recommend 'Catters near John's floor spot tour venues to get to see him in action. He is one of a kind - captivating singing and wonderful sounds from his harmonium - a preacher's portable pump organ.

John, I hope that all the floor spots flourish and bloom into proper bookings. Good luck.

What's always struck me about John's singing is that he's got the expression, the variation and the timing of a good unaccompanied singer - the words don't just hang off the tune like washing on a line. And then there's the harmonium, which adds a whole extra dimension. He's a terrific act - hear him if you can!

Well, I survived that lot, and am now back home. The tour was successful.....played almost all the right notes, and sang almost all the right words. Sold a few CDs. Plenty of interest from organisers, and some potential times suggested for bookings - March, June and September. Now I've got to start sorting out the possibilities, and see if I can actually make more money than it costs me next time! There was already an email from one club waiting for me when I got back, asking me to contact them to arrange a date, which is a good start. I think I've now floor-spotted about three quarters of the clubs in Kent, Sussex, Hampshire and Surrey, and some in Berkshire and Herts. Had some awful problems travelling, though; every time I went out to a club, I seemed to join the back of a queue after about two miles. (Although I managed to arrive at the venue in Prestatyn - some 360 or so miles away, at precisely the time I intended). My tent is now falling to bits. They don't make stuff like they used to. Anybody know a folk song about how much better the old ones were?
Tarra well! JK

Thanks for the comments Pip. Peggy Gordon is an old favourite of mine, which I usd to accompany on guitar, but in it's most recent incarnation, I use the Waldzither - a small German cittern, similar to the 18thC 'English Guitar'. They crop up regularly on Ebay.

Next date is the Bothy, Southport, on Sunday 19th June. It's at the Park Golf Club, Park Lane West. It's where the Prom turns inland at the north end.

Forthcoming south east dates:
Saturday, Sept. 10th: Lewes. Elephant & Castle, White Hill.
Tuesday 13th: Windlesham. The Sun, Chertsey Rd.
Thursday 15th: Bishop's Stortford. British Legion, Windhill.
Sunday 20th: Reading. RISC Centre, London St.
Tuesday, 20th: Ringwood. The Elm Tree, Hightown.
Copies of the new CD 'For Honour and Promotion' will be on sale. And copies of the first CD t00.
I was hoping to fill in the gaps with promo spots, but this is proving problematical. It always takes a bit of organising, with a high proportion of clubs these days being twice- or once- a month, so that whenever you are in an area, it's the wrong week for half the clubs. This time it's worse than usual, unless I add considerable mileage to the tour by taking in another county or two. I did email one club about a floor spot, but they haven't replied. Not the first time that's happened, either. It used to be a lot easier in the old days, but we couldn't possibly go back to that, could we? Shouldn't there be a folk song about how much better things were back then?
It's a hard life on the road. JK

Two upcoming dates: Thursday June 7th; Orpington Folk Club, Change of Horses,
                                  Farnborough High St. BR6 7BB. 8.15pm
Friday June 8th: Seaford Folk Club, British Legion Hall, Claremont Rd
                                  BN25 2BJ. 7.45pm

That's all there is. Nothing else lined up. I'm still not known in many areas, but I can't afford to do the promotional tours, so the future isn't looking good. In fact, if I can't get bookings some other way, or get some free money from somewhere, I may have to get rid of the van next February when the MOT and insurance become due. And that means I won't be going anywhere. I'm setting up a website, so maybe that might get me some work. Everybody these days seems to think that's the way to do it; I'm not convinced, but we'll see.
There are still CDs available. Further to my comments a couple of posts back, David Kidman's review is also on the Living Tradition website. I WILL sort out a link, just as soon as I can button-hole a computer-literate person...

John - the Seaford gig's in my diary - looking forward to seeing you there!

Good luck with the website, John - it can certainly be a way of getting work. You can put sound samples on it, video clips (or links to YouTube), CD details with payment by PayPal, email address, telephone number(s), gig details, etc. Well worth it in my opinion.

If you'd like some video shot for YouTube and/or other purposes at Seaford, do let me know. I've done quite a few over the last two years - the Boat Band, Mike Nicholson, Ben Paley - and meself of course. In fact, if you're down in the area for a day or two, we could even arrange a daylight video session.

PM me if you're interested.

Here's David Kidman's review. This is the last paragraph:

John really is an excellent singer, whom we don't see often enough around the folk clubs; he has an appealing tone, a natural command of phrasing and an unerring sense of line and gentle dynamics. And it's evident from listening to these wholly satisfying renditions that for every single item on this magnificent 70-minute disc, John has lived extensively with these songs and thought long and hard about their interpretation and the optimum performing versions. His scholarship is exemplary too, as can be seen from the meticulous care with which he credits and acknowledges sources in his booklet notes.

Speaking for myself, it's one of my albums of 2011; good songs, well-arranged and in renditions as good as you'll hear from anyone. If you haven't heard John's "As I was a-wandering", in particular, you're missing out.

It's available from John, who may also have the odd copy of his first (equally good) album - mail him at harmoniumhero [at] hotmail [dot] com.

Blimey - it's well over a year since I last posted on this thread. Nothing's changed since my last post. Still nothing much happening, and I'm more skint than I was last year. The ceilidh band work, which was keeping the van on the road, has dried up completely in the last 12 months. I've got some offers of dates in the south east for next year, but can't take them on unless I can get some more to tie in. I need enough to cover next year's insurance or I won't be able to do anything.
In the meantime, I am at the White Lion, Manchester Rd, Swinton next Monday, Aug. 12th.

Hi Phil. Just spotted the thread on the list, and when I saw your post, I thought you were a week out, until I looked at my last post, and realised it was me! I was there last Monday - 5th. Sorry about that, and apologies to anyone else who saw it, and was hoping to see me there next week. It's got me worried. I think I had the 12th in my mind for some other reason, and am now wondering what it was. There have been so many dates bandied about this summer with the dance teams - most of which haven't come to anything, that it's all becoming a blur. Actually, I've just picked up an unexpected date for Geoff Bibby's club in Warrington. Jerry Epstein, from the US, was supposed to be there, but he's recently had a stroke, and though he's OK, he's decided to cancel this tour. So Geoff asked me to do the date.
Sunday, September 29th: The Bull's Head, Church Rd. Warrington. (Just off A49.) 8.30pm.
Next date after that is Skipton Folk Club, The Narrow Bout, Victoria St. Monday October 7th.
Skipton's a bit far, but Warrington's not too bad - just down the M62, or the M56!

See Ya. JK
