Tune Req: Bad Dream Blues (Dave Van Ronk)

Subject: TAB for Bad Dream Blues
From: Easy Rider

This is a great early Dave Van Ronk song. I don't know where he got it from. I first heard it on an Electra album called "The Blues Project", which was a compilation of songs done by White, urban blues players like Van ronk, Danny Kalb, Geoff Muldaur, Spider John Koerner, Etc.

Van Ronk played it in Drop-D tuneing, and I used to be able to play it, thirty years ago, but, alas, it is long forgotten! Does anybody out there play this song? Can you write out the TAB?

I have recently gotten a tape of the original album, lost many years ago, and I found a lead sheet in an old "Sing Out", but that's not enough for me to work out the song. I'll post the lyrics here, when I get around to writing them out, in a day or two.

Help! EZR

Well, I got the TAB for this song last year, finally, and now I can play it pretty well and almost sing it, but nothing like Dave's heart rending rendition. It's really played on open-D tuning.

Here are the lyrics:

BAD DREAM BLUES—Dave Van Ronk

INSTRUMENTAL (Intro)

I woke up this mornin', good gal on my, on my, on my mind.
Woke up this mornin', good gal on my mind.
Woke up this mornin', good gal on my mind.
She's a sweet little woman, hate to leave her behind.

Ever dream you wake up cold, cold in hand?
Ever dream like you cold in hand?
Ever dream like you wake up cold in hand?
That's a sure sign baby, your woman's got another man.

Well, my right side jump and my flesh begin, flesh begin to crawl.
Oh, my right side jump, ----------------------.
My right side jump, flesh begin to crawl.
That's a sure sign baby, another mule kickin' in my stall.

If you don't want me, please don't let me, let me, let me know.
You don't want me, ----------------------------
-----------------------------------------------
Well, a man like me needs some place to go.

I'm troubled in my mind, guess I always, alway-, always will
I been troubled in my mind, guess I always will.
I been troubled in my mind, guess I always will.
But trouble in love sure gonna get me killed.

If I mistreat you, babe, sure don't mean, don't mean, don't mean no harm.
I mistreat you, baby, don't mean no harm.
Yeah, I mistreat you, baby, don't mean no harm.
I'm a motherless child and I don't know right from wrong.

INSTRUMENTAL BREAK

I woke up this mornin', good gal on my, on my, on my mind.
Woke up this mornin', ---------------------------
Yes, I woke up this mornin', good gal on my mind.
She's a sweet little woman, hate to leave her behind.

INSTRUMENTAL (Fade)

I would like to get a copy of Bad Dream Blues. I used to have the Blues Project Album and have been searching high and low for it. Can anyone direct me to a source for the album or make me an mp3 of the cut? I used to play this song many years ago--the only open D guitar piect I knew.

The really great song on that album - which ought to be rereleased, along with the Old Timey Band Project - was Winin' Boy - the guy who did it faded away, but his college roomate, who he taught to play it, Jorma Kaukonnen, did pretty well for himself.
