Lyr Add: Where the Mulcair River Flows

Subject: Lyr Add: WHERE THE MULCAIR RIVER FLOWS
From: Gavyn

Having spent much time searching for words of this old Irish ballad, I append it here for any other mudcat members who may seek it.

WHERE THE MULCAIR RIVER FLOWS

I'll sing to you of a lovely place, It's where I'd like to be.
It's there I've spent my youthful days, in merriment and glee.
It's colleen's fair, I do declare, 'tis with them I would go.
To take a ramble down the banks, where the Mulcair river flows.

The hills of Derk and of Brackile, 'tis amongst you I'd remain
Where I could pass my time away, round lovely Pallasgreen
Fond memories oft times bring me back, to the days long, long ago,
When I used to ramble down the banks, where the Mulcair River flows.

'Tis well I do remember too, how in my youth and bloom,
I've hunted on the mountain side, by Cappamore and Doon,
By Carrickbeg and Castletown, places you all well know
And Gurtavalla's muddy banks where the Mulcair River flows.

And so tonight, my comrades bright, I'll bid you all adieu
And as I finish those last few lines, I'll quickly tell to you
Train up your youth, to hunt and shoot, with gun and dog to go
And kill the game that still remains, where the Mulcair River flows.

Good work, Gavyn. I think many of us will appreciate this.

I can't find "Mulcaire River" in my favorite gazetteer, but Google gives 200 hits on "Mulcaire River" and 2000 hits on "Mulcair River".

John Beag O Flatharta, a Conemara man, has this song on one of his CDs of a few years ago, with the title 'Where The Mulcair River Flows'. His style is kind of 'modern folk' with guitar. I like it a lot.

I have the song as the "Mulkear River ."

Well, I've found Cappamore and Doon, and Gortavalla, Carrig Beg, and Pallas Grean are also on this map.

So is Brackyle!
On the sleeve of the C.D. "Bygone Days" by P.J. Murrihy the spelling is Mulchaire, but my ordnance survey road atlas gives Mulkear.

Anyone have the notes for where the mulcair river flows?

From a Doon man I will have to say that the spelling of all rivers and townslands are perfect in the Gavyn posting. Fair play

This song was recorded by Ryan's Fancy on the album A Time with Ryan's Fancy in 1979. (www.ryansfancy.com ) It was later released by Denis Ryan and Denis Carey (cousins) on the CD Newport town ( http://www.fivelinemusic.com/ ) Both gentlemen are from that part of Ireland.

Here's a description of the album A Time With Ryan's Fancy but it doesn't mention WHERE THE MULCAIRE RIVER FLOWS.

Here's a description of the album Newport Town by Denis Ryan and Denis Carey. The song there is called WHERE THE MULCAIR RIVER FLOWS (note spelling) and it is attributed to James Ryan. You can also hear a sound sample of the first verse.

this song was written by my grandfather Bill Griffin of Doon who had the farm out at the mulchair river by the Toher Castle. My late mother sang it all the time and told me her father wrote it. I had searched for the words and thrilled to finally find it. It is often confused with Newport Town which has the same air I believe.

Does anyone know older people now living in Doon, Co. Limerick.

I'm working on a MIDI for the tune, thanks to Jim Dixon's link from 2009. It sounds like a good flute or whistle tune.

Sorry, I can't help with chords. But, for those who are interested, I found 2 recordings on Spotify:

WHERE THE MULCHAIR RIVER FLOWS, performed by ULC on "Spring" (2000)

WHERE THE MULKERE RIVER FLOWS, performed by John Beag on "Tá an Workhouse Lán" (2010)

ULC is a Denmark-based trio consisting of Peter Uhrbrand, Sonnich Lydom, and Seamus Cahill. The record label is Danish and most of the songs on the album have Danish titles. What you hear on that cut is a fine male voice (Cahill, if I had to guess) accompanied by piano and guitar. There is a review of the album at CDRoots.com and a detailed description with sound samples at AlbumTrad.com
