ADD: Lookin' Out My Back Door (John Fogerty)

From: Ulker

Hi all!

I'm still looking for lyrics of the song from Big Lebowski movie. Maybe someone could remember the episode where Dude is on his way back home after visiting doctor, Country-like style song sound (and Dude drops the butt on his seat and hits garbage container with his car). Getting any information (artist, lyrics, etc.) would be nice.

Any suggestions?

Thank you, Ulker

Hello... The song is "Lookin' Out My Backdoor" by Creedence Clearwater Revival. This song isnt on the Big Lebowski soundtrack, unfortunately. One of my favorite movies:) Found some Creedence lyrics at http://www.escape.ca/~mloewen/ccr/lyrics/ccr2.html

hope this helps- Will

I’ll assume Will Anderson was correct in identifying this song. IMDb confirms that it was used in the soundtrack, but I haven’t watched the film recently and can’t confirm that it appeared in the scene that Ulker described. Since the lyrics were never posted, I’ll post them now. (25 years later!)

LOOKIN’ OUT MY BACK DOOR
Words and music by John Fogerty
As recorded by Creedence Clearwater Revival on “Cosmo’s Factory” (1970)

Just got home from Illinois.
Lock the front door, oh boy!
Got to sit down, take a rest on the porch.

Imagination sets in.
Pretty soon I'm singin’:
Doo, doo, doo, lookin’ out my back door.

There's a giant doin’ cartwheels,
A statue wearin’ high heels.
Look at all the happy creatures dancin’ on the lawn!

A dinosaur Victrola,
Listenin’ to Buck Owens.
Doo, doo, doo, lookin’ out my back door.

Tambourines and elephants are playin’ in the band.
Won't you take a ride on the flyin’ spoon? Doo, doo, doo.

Wond'rous apparition
Provided by magician.
Doo, doo, doo, lookin’ out my back door.

[break]

Tambourines and elephants are playin’ in the band.
Won't you take a ride on the flyin’ spoon? Doo, doo, doo.

Bother me tomorrow,
Today, I'll buy no sorrow.
Doo, doo, doo, lookin’ out my back door.

[break]

Forward troubles Illinois.
Lock the front door, oh boy!
Look at all the happy creatures dancin’ on the lawn!

Bother me tomorrow.
Today, I'll buy no sorrow.
Doo, doo, doo, lookin’ out my back door.

I just wonder whether "elephants" is a mondegreen for another musical device that could play in the band. If the song were newer, "cellphones" would make more sense.

Sign in 1:34 / 1:58 John Fogerty sings Lookin' Out my Back Door from his home.

I reluctantly agree that he's not singing "cellphones"; that would have been truly prophetic of our time when the ringing of these devices accompanies so many band concerts.

What about "xylophones"?

John Fogerty sings "elephants", it's not a mondegreen. Just listen, and see also the CCR songbook and https://americansongwriter.com/lookin-out-my-back-door-creedence-clearwater-revival-behind-song-lyrics-meaning/

John Fogerty may have misheard it from his ghostwriter, as he did in the perfectly sensible phrase "The bathroom's on the right". Perhaps he was "elephant's", as they say in London?

John *wrote* both Lookin' Out My Back Door and Bad Moon Rising so he should know. If you can't hear what he was singing very clearly, you should clean your ears.

@Joe can you please close this thread? Further "discussion" is futile.

Dear Reinhard, this is not a "discussion". I did not seriously believe that CCR predicted noisy cellphones in 1970, and I imagine Joe and some mudcatters enjoy a bit of humor.

By the way, ghostwriters and co-writers are quite common for alleged singer-songwriters. Some even admitted it. John Fogerty is not among the top suspects, but who knows?

And genuine mondegreens can have a long Internet life. If debunked and corrected on one lyrics page, five others who copied them survive. The "bathroom" line, of course, was a joke right from the beginning.

When I was in high school in the late 60's we spent more time trying to figure out what Fogerty was singing in those CCR songs than we did studying.

The topic of apparent mondegreens adopted by the original singer would not be complete without the immortal line "Do you gaze at your body and wish you had hair?" The Internet is still discussing the exact history of the famous "Laughter Version", which proves that Elvis is still alive, but one thing is certain: he did it on purpose.

Again, I do not seriously believe that the above "elephants" were an analogous case, but who knows?

Others write "... at your bald head ...", which seems confirmed by the Youtube video I just watched. Actually I hear something like "bod 'ead", but the final "d" can be heard clearly. No need to repeat the eternal "discussion"; I just would not like to leave yet another error uncorrected.

I have to agree with gillymor.
John Fogerty sings differently than he speaks,
and his accent is so affected that it messes up his diction.

He just played the Tanglewood festival, by the way,
and it was pouring down rain most of the show.
