BS: Can Palin see Russia?

Did anyone ever see or hear Palin say she could see Russia from her home?

I think that's a joke from SNL - Tina Fey answering The "foreign policy" question - watch the video posted in one of the Sarah Palin threads, or I think you can get there from NBC.

Cheers,

Palin said you can see Russia from a place in Alaska.

She has nailed it, hasn't she? (But as I have remarked again and again, any of these people who either question Palin or mimic her could in fact do a better job as VP than Palin herself).

She said directly in answer to a question that Alaska's borders were with "other countries', which helped her foreign policy expertise.

Someone else (I forget who) said that she could see Russia. Even after it was shown that she didn't claim to be able to SEE Russia, they are holding to the silliness that being on the east side of the Bering sea gives her some sort of aura in global expertise.

Sort of expertise by osmosis

DR. MARK
Could anyone among us
Have an inkling on a clue?
What magic feats, or wizardry
And voodoo you can do?
And who would ever guess
What powers you possess?
And who would have the sense to change his views?
And stop to mind his E.S.P's and Q's
For who would ever dream of hearing phones before they ring,
Or harrowing the earth to send you up a little spring?
Or finding you've been crowned 'The Queen of Lost and Found'
And who would not be stunned to see you prove
There's more to us than surgeons can remove?

So much more than we ever knew,
So much more were we born to do.
Should you draw back the curtain,
This I am certain.
You'll be impressed with you.

On a clear day
Rise and look around you
And you'll see who you are.
On a clear day
How it will astound you
That the glow of your being outshines ev'ry star.

You'll feel part of ev'ry mountain sea and shore.
You can hear, from far and near,
A world you've never heard before.
And on a clear day...
On that clear day...
You can see forever and ever more!

The response to the title question is yes.
The shortest distance between two islands you can see in Carol's post.

The Bering strait bridge is projected to be 103 km long, but the shortest distance from continent to continent, disregarding islands, is actually 86 km (53 ml). Since there are mountains on both sides, a direct line of vision is possible, given appropriate weather onditions.

Wolfgang and Carol are correct: you can see Russia from Alaska.

During the Cold War Russian batteries and other "junk" was sometimes found on islands off the coast of Alaska; the islands were used to train the Soviet equivalent of the Special Forces. Aleuts and others have long traveled by kayak to Siberia to visit with their relatives over there.

Nobody really gave a shit then and shouldn't now. After all, CUBA is only 90 miles away....

The one time I was on St Lawrence Island in the Bering Straights, the weather was so crappy we had trouble seeing the next building, much less the next country. This area is not usually conducive to exceptional vistas. I'm hoping that the voters realize how inept and inexperienced Palin is before they decide to put her into the office of Vice President. But I don't hold out much hope, I've been disappointed too often in the past.

The real question is why she'd want to see Russia across the Bering and/or Arctic seas at all. On a clear day I can see the mountains a hundred miles west of here, but other than the fact that I can it really means nothing except clear weather.

Well, think about it---sometimes Putin flies over Alaska air space on a trip home. Sarah is alert to all that---along with SAC. Will she now be claiming to be in charge of SAC?   (if she knows what that means). Do you think she ever saw Dr Strangelove? She may well have absorbed her alleged foreign policy experience from the film. Now with the financial crisis she had best watch Its A Wonderful Life for a happy ending.

Some of the more hilarious portions of Tina Fey's impersonation/satire were exact quotes from Palin's interview.

It's almost unfortunate that the verbatim parts were mixed in with the exaggerations (e.g., "I can see Russia from my house!"). Most viewers don't realize that much of the script came straight from the interview, unedited, and probably should be so informed.

Problem with ridiculing her--admittedly a tempting target--is now the expectations for the VP debate are so low that if she is semi-coherent it will be counted a triumph for her. And in the debate she will do nothing but attack Obama.

So the headline Friday will be: " Gov. Palin Shatters the 'Clueless' Image; Pit Bull Is Back"

I agree that Palin may well be deemed a 'winner' tomorrow night just on the basis of bright-faced, perky lines, never mind the winding words.

Tonight PBS ran a couple of previous vice presidential debates, notably the GHW Bush and Geraldine Ferraro. I can see why Bush was considered to have done better- he was energetic and decisive, she more soft spoken and almost tired.

They said tonight that no US presidential outcome has ever been affected by the second spot ticket. I can't imagine why, frankly. Nowadays the second spot is an important one.

MaCain, tonight, is kissing off Michigan, he's way behind in New Hampshire & Virginia, etc, by the time the debate's done he'll be down to carrying Texas where he can retire with "Lone Georgie".
She won't be considered a contender if she scratches her way through the cat fight tonight. Barack is seen as a Clark Kent, make him bleed & 'you bad' but attack him all you want, using spears, bullets or lollypops, he's indistructable, he can even fall or be thrown off tall buildings with out aquiring a single limp. She's toast.

Well, Vice President Cheney is important to an unprecedented degree because he's been calling the shots all along, puppetmaster to Georgie-Boy's marionette. That hasn't been the case ever before, to my knowledge, and would certainly not be the case for the next administeration, regardless of which ticket takes office.

One of the more telling moments in last night's VP debate was when Palin was asked if she agreed with Cheney's idea that he, as veep, can decide at any given moment whether he's part of the legislative or the executive branch, and to switch back and forth as it suits his purposes.

Her response was alarming not so much because she seemed to indicate that she'd like to emulate Uncle Dick, but because she gave no evidence of understanding the question, or even realizing that there's been any controversy over Cheney's attempts to evade investigation.
