03 Oct 08 - 10:18 AM (#2456409) Subject: RE: Song search N Yorkshire From: GUEST,Betsy at Work Dave ...Source of songs from the area around Middlesbrough/Redcar/Marske/Staithes. Middlesbrough ( note spelling - no "o" after the b)doesn't have a great deal of traditional song and music but it has a wealth of songwriters in the traditional vein. Biggest influence (song wise) has been the prolific writer Graeme Miles. Another one or two , forgive any obvious omissions, are, the following :- The Fettlers ( who performed many of Graeme's Ron's and Vins songs ) The Wilson Family (who perform many of Graeme's songs) Ron Angel Vin Garbutt Peter Bond Pete Betts Richard Grainger Eddie Walker Bob Fortune Bernie Parry Pete Davies Bob Skingle Pete and Bob at the end of the list are form outside of the Boro but after 35 plus years ( each )living here surely qualify and I have seconded Bernie because he is a good writer and performer. |
03 Oct 08 - 10:27 AM (#2456415) Subject: RE: Song search N Yorkshire From: Dave the Gnome The Bellerby Sword Dance Play contains lots of singing. Bit further west than where you are looking but firmly North Yorks all the same - Eastern end of Wensleydale. Song, dance and a play! Looks ideal for a schools project:-) Remember Dr Sunshine doing Swinton (Manchester not Yorkshire) Folk Festival, Dave? I have find memories of all sorts of shenanigans on Swinton Shopping Precinct:-) We are still running it! 22nd year I think this October 17/18. Cheers Dave |
