He was telling a wonderful story in Scottish dialect that he learned on a music tour of Scotland with Ed Miller. I think the hats were his own idea. :-) Amiel was born in Glasgow, now lives in Israel, and he and his wife time their U.S. visits to include the Getaway whenever possible. |

LEJ's harmonica was so hot I swear I saw smoke risin' up from it, and the finish blistered on the neck of Amos' guitar. Iff'n you was thinkin' pennywhistle ain't a blues instrument - think again. I submitted a few "suggested captions" -- I guess Vince has to do something in his software for them to appear. Just tried to identify some of the individuals. Hopefully you can see what a fine time we all had, and what a beautiful spot West River is. Start planning NOW to come next year! That's October 2-5, 2009! Mike, the Moose Turd Pie group consisted of all of the Getaway attendees among the many people involved in a project making a CD of various people singing Utah Phillips' songs, with all profits to go to Utah's widow, Joanna. I think there are about 28 tracks so far, with some very big names among them. Should be released in the spring, I think. Dan Schatz and Jacqui Morse are the movers and shakers on this project, so you could PM either of them for more details. At the Getaway concert they did Utah's song, "Singing Through the Hard Times." The weather was amazing and the people grand. I'm stil processing an amazing combination of music and well..... unique experiences. I didn't bring a video camera and when I wasn't rolling on the floor on Saturday night (or was it Sunday morning--that's a bit of the blurr....) It was an amazing exerience. The Boberts Blues Jam absolutely rocked the house in a honky tonk, outside of time kinda way. Now Janie, I can't say I'm not sighing with relief that some of those pictures didn't survive. However Jacqui also has photos .... I wait in trepedation... Peter T and LEJ absolutely have to post the Full Moon Blues they put togehter during workshop. More as It beings to process. Hanging out with Peter T and having deep talk with him and lonesome and --wait for it--Bearded Bruce, and so many other conversations and songs my puir haid is still reeling. It was very strange--from the moment we headed south from Baltimore to the moment we re-entered the airport road on the way out Monday, it was like the bubble that Dorothy wakes up from at the end of Oz. It was just a natural continuation picking up where last year's ended, and it was unphased and untouched by the passage of time in between. Kind of like passing the signpost on the highway up ahead, and entering the Twilight Zone. Special thanks to Dani, Tink, Mary, Janie, Annie and Charmion for their contributions to the Annual Collection of Memories of Perfect Pulchritude. Seriously magical moments....Something like 4:00 am Sunday morning....Barry and Mick making great music in between insults....Keith wandering in a little after 5:00 am to share and join in with his music....LEJ singing Apolitical Blues....Genie's delightful music and spirit....beautifully written songs by Marion....she had most of us in tears in the regional industries workshop with a remarkable song she had written....Carl's amazing playing and singing and leadership - and his amazing reportoire of songs....Amos capturing all of us in the magic of a song he had written straight from his heart....A solitary walk through the woods behind the cabins with big downed trees sporting jewel-toned fungi and moss on logs so green it glowed....observing Bill and Rita's son and noting what a fine young man he is - how could he not be, coming from those two sets of genes, watching Elena and Holly enjoy themselves thoroughly, such beautiful girls, both inside and out. The special warmth and loveliness of Rita and the pleasure of seeing she and Bill perform together at the concert - first time in their 30 year history at the Getaway! Getting to spend a lot of time with Linda Goodman - an absolutely delightful soul if ever there was one - a wee little woman with such heart! Tinker and Sins - I see you once a year, but that is all it takes with kindred spirits to know we are connected at our cores. Falling in love with Joe's blue eyes, bright smile and lovely, sane spirit, like I do every year. Dani, Elena, Holly and I walked over toward the end of the Utah Phillips Tribute and sat outside on the steps, waiting to say goodbye to so many in there that we love before hitting the road Sunday evening. The reprise of "Singing Through the Hard Times" drew us up the steps into the infirmary to stand outside the door and join our voices with the rest. To hear all these voices of all these different people raised together in a song such as this seemed the embodiment of the spirit of the Getaway. I say this every year, and I mean it every year with the same fervor as the first time - it is a fine and rare thing that you FSGW folks have created out of your love of the music and your rich hearts and minds. I am so grateful to be invited to share in this one weekend that has become such a blessing and grace in my life. Oh, I nearly forgot. Joe Offer and I both slept with Blake Madison. Janie |

I especially enjoyed reconnecting with an old friend, Jim Bean of The Beans. For a few years, Jim and I worked at the same drug program and sang together alot and even did a few gigs. The Getaway is like a musical reunion. I meet with people who I usually see only once a year at the Getaway and it feels like we're just getting up from our last day last year (I hope that makes sense). I was a bit under the weather physically 'cause I had an infected tooth that wasn't calming down the way it was supposed to with the antibiotic. I actually went to the cabin after dinner on Saturday for a quick nap before the evening concert. It ended up as a full night's sleep! That is a Getaway first for me. I am sorry that I missed so much good music. Thanks to Songster Bob for helping me with the words to "Louise" at the Sunday night concert. It seemed that the audience was singing along and when I forgot the words, it looked like everybody else had forgotten them, too. Very strange. Well, I must go back to work. Roger in Baltimore |

She was recording most of the singarounds in the Peace cabins, so you will hear the banter. She also recorded the concerts. I won't reveal the person, but one of the funniest moments ever happened one morning. Only at a music camp! I was cursing that Spaw wasn't there to catch it, because it would have become a rambling story thread, and would have starred the Reg boys. I had come back to sneak in a shower. Afterwards I am at the sink, shaving, and the door opens and someone comes in and goes into the toilet stall to have a morning constitutional. He didn't see me because the door opens towards me. It is quiet, and the usual assorted grunts and burps and other forms of toilet melodies are going on. Suddenly it goes quiet for about 10 seconds, then the person in the stall sings: In a beautiful and rousing Gospel fashion. Then the toilet flushes. I had a hard time not swallowing my toothbrush. The timing was impeccable. By the way, the cabins were wonderful, but what the hell was that greasy smudge on the window of the door in the Peace cabin. You would think they would clean them things. It looked like two quarter moons kissing, with little wispy marks all around them. I think I will write to the camp and complain. On a serious note, thanks to Matt Watroba for introducing me to it, as well as Anne Hills and David Roth for writing it, for the song "That Kind of Grace". I hadn't sang it for quite a while, and came on it while rummaging through my song sheets (a habit of mine at Getaways). I love dearly when this gathering of supremely talented and savvy folksingers come together, and they listen, and then contribute to your song. It is a joy that one can only know when singing in front of other performers and fans of this music. Standing in front and getting the full effect of the gathered voices ....... I just have a hard time describing what flows through one's soul when it happens. Thank you, FSGW, for doing what you do. We left in a hurry on Sunday at noon, and didn't get to say goodbye everyone, sorry about that. I took Susette to the hospital in Silver Spring. We spent the afternoon and the evening there, but eventually they found that she had passed a Kidney stone. Very, very painful, but it's all over and she's doing well. Sweet Dani arranged for Pete and Grace Kraemer (who saved us big time) to bring our second car home, since we'd had to come in two cars, and everything came out well in the end. Good Getaway. You might keep that in mind as you share your wilder experiences. And, that this is a Methodist camp. Much time was spent in finding it, some of us like it very much, and we want to continue to be welcome there. In the past people sometimes read post-Getaway threads and decided it sounded ... well ... like a weekend of wild behavior and drunkenness. It's not!!! It's almost heaven, it's a family weekend, and I don't want people to think differently. And even if it's tempting late in the wee hours to be somewhat uninhibited and irreverent, not only would I prefer not to know the sordid details, I'd definitely prefer that the whole world not know them. As for some of the footage .... well I'm definately on the limited distribution side (hmmmm... ) Check this site Yes DVD and see if they have a location near you. It's a pretty painless process if you can burn it on a CD they will clean it up and I'll happily pay for a copy. And if you then destroy the original.... As for uplifting moments, I'd add Marion's song about the The cellist of Sarajevo it was a shining moment at the concert Saturday night. In fact, I had planned on singing it next year at the Getaway. And as for drinking, I don't recall anyone drinking in my presence. That doesn't mean they didn't have a fifth of Old Slapentickle stashed in their Rav 4. Oh no, I believe everyone conducted themselves in a manner both fitting and proper, considering the circumstances. As to the Blues Jamboree, everybody was actually DANCING and SINGING and LAUGHING, activities which I believe even Methodists condone, and one in which I will continue to indulge with enthusiasm until I physically can't. No one hurt or insulted anyone, no one damaged anything, everyone had fun, no one that I saw was out of control or dangerous, and people were both courteous and kind to one another. Those are the important things in my mind. Many of us who had a ton of fun at the Peace Lodge until 5 am, were in the Gospel Sing at 10:30 am singing Are You Washed in the Blood of the Lamb, and back at the rowdy fun in Bobert's Blues Session at 3 pm. As the happy stall-occupier in Mick's story said, "Hallelujah!" |

At a 'home' weekend festival I am as happy as anyone to spend time (And Money) at a session in the Beer Tent . The fact that there was NO Beer Tent did not in the least detract from the enjoyment I had , making music with such a wonderful group of friends The Blues Bash in the Peace Cabin was an example of people getting high on Music and Companionship , NO need for ANY artificial Stimulants at all . |

I don't know of a friendlier, more interesting group of people than the FSGW folks. And you couldn't find a more beautiful spot to hold forth. I really enjoyed the Dick Rodgers tribute session. The stories, songs, and remembrances were both funny and touching. Not really knowing Dick well, I felt I came to know him through the conversation among his friends. I also wanted to thank Kendall and Jacqui for their splendid performance of the Masefield poem, and the beautiful song that followed. Barry Finn as well, for the gusto and heartfelt, well, volume of his sea chanties. Especially Friday night when his voice was crystal clear. My appreciation to Annie and Julia for letting me accompany them in some old time fiddle tunes while the sun painted Chesapeake Bay in hues of pink and red. To Micca for being the jolliest and brightest animated garden gnome I have ever met. To Peter for being as honest and funny in person as he is in this forum. To Mick for being so kind as to, when I requested he play John O'Dreams to help lull me off to bed and complimented him on his relaxing voice, play Roddy McCorley at full volume. To Amos and Janie for being as good friends for three days a year as most that I have for 365. To all of you and those I didn't mention but remember well, a sincere thanks, and may the Moon of Peace light your way until we meet again. |

(I didn't catch the beginning of Micca's wonderful Ravens song, so I skipped recording it, but he and I seemed to agree that we should let him 'finish' the song before we introduce it to the world via videotape. I also didn't get in recording position quick enough to catch the beginning of Claire's song, but I got most of it.) I'm editing the clips, as much as feasible, to separate songs/acts. I also got a lot of the Doo Wop workshop and parts of Bobert's Blues Band. I did not get set up in recording position Saturday night before the concert started, so, sad to say, I didn't get most of it. But next year I'll make sure I've cleared out a few dozen gb on my hard drive and also mastered the technique of saving stuff to DVD, so I should be able to video with greater abandon. (All you people who pooh-pooh Macs should take a gander at the new iPods and MacBooks and their easy-peasy videoing capabilities. Neener - neener.) I'll also share some stills from the videos. It was good to get everybody together for Utah's "Singing Through the Hard Times" - the double CD set by the same name will, as Jacqui says, be out sometime early next year. It's to early to give all the details, but hopefully we'll be able to make some more definitive announcement soon. Since Kendall, Jacqui and I are the primary organizers, you can be assured that all details will be shared with Mudcat. Geeta and I spent a lot of time running after Kiran, which was fun but exhausting! He loved the music, and during the Saturday night concert kept running outside to look at boats, cars and the moon, and then saying "More music!" and running back in. He did wake up early, though - about 4:30 - so I took him on a walk and found Elizabeth Laprelle, Darriel Day and Julia Friend still in the retreat center trading songs. (Lisa Null got up and joined us, too.) One side effect of leading a lot of workshops AND running after Kiran was that I didn't feel like I had time to socialize as much as I would have liked. I had a great time getting acquainted or reacquainted with so many Mudcatters, not to mention the local FSGW people. There were some very memorable moments in the workshops and concerts, but I thought the highlights were the late night sessions where there was a more intimate feel. I went down in the hopes of being able to introduce some of my own songs, but not being sure how welcome singer-songwriter material would be. It turned out that my songs were very well received, for which I'm very grateful, and that it was a real pleasure to perform them for such an informed and receptive audience. FWIW, the regional industries song that Janie mentioned can be heard here: I Will Bring You Home; and the cellist song Tinker mentioned is here: What He Could Give. Charmion of Ottawa very kindly gave me a drive to and from the getaway, so I had good opportunity to get to know her and pick her (very expansive) mind about some points of history. Also, on the way back we spent a night with Mudcatter Peg and her partner, and I had lots of fun playing with her big dog. Will post more as various specific memories want to announce themselves. FlashEarth is a standalone site which is actually a subset of http://www.neave.com/, an amazing site set up by a young programmer in London. I knew that Diamond was a member of Boarding Party, one of the most influential sea music groups that have grqced this wide world. And I knew he did occasional satirical songs such as "The Folksinger's Lament" but I had no idea of all the other creative ditties he had composed. There's also a "fake" CD included with the song book which demonstrates how some of the songs might be sung, sometimes with alternative lyrics! Very useful to those of us who are musically illiterate. Dave and Barry did a fine job of coordinating the Sea Shanty Workshop. (I could pull all-nighters back to back with no prob when I was in my 20s. Can't figure out way the bod can't handle it now.) Anyhoo, foggy sleep-deprived and nasally blocked minds do dumb things like plugging in their laptops in airport terminals, reminding themselves not to forget the power supply cord when packing up the laptop, and immediately thereafter walking off with the laptop power supply still plugged into the terminal wall. I finally tracked down the power supply this morning; I knew exactly where and when I left it, in the Raleigh-Durham terminal, but, for the same reason I so easily left it behind, apparently nobody else noticed it till last night. (A white cord plugged into a white wall above a white counter, with the end of the cord flopped behind a row of chairs; very easy to miss.) I should be getting the cord back next Tues. or Wed. (It helps to have a niece who works for American Airlines and based in Raleigh.) Meanwhile, I really don't have anything but short-term emergency access to the MacBook that has my Getaway pics and videos. So it'll be sometime next week before I can post anything or send any videos to Charlie Baum or Dick G. or set up a password-limited website. I did get some really nice footage of a few events, though, and I can easily make stills from the videos too. Stay tuned. G |

Hope the bug goes away soon, both Kendall and I are under the weather - he's on anti-biotics as whatever it was went to his chest. I'm still trying to get together enough energy to put down recollections of the Getaway but right now everything is still a bit of a blur. Those five hour nights do not help any! |

Of course, Gorgeous Gary was also carrying a bug which he only announced after I gave him a warm greetings. But so far so good! Another group I thoroughly enjoyed was The Beans, for their harmony arrangements and tasteful instrumentation; they need to do a new CD! The harmony workshop led by The Kossoy Sisters, Julia Friend and Ken Schatz is another recurring memory for me. The Parodies workshop by Dave Diamond and Micca was hilarious. I provided "Wake Up Susina" explaining that it was the original song while "Wake Up Little Suzie" was actually the parody; I'm not sure if if I convinced anyone but some appeared to be amused. Elizabeth Laprelle was every bit as wonderful as I remember her from a Getaway three years ago. This time I was impressed with the range of songs she sings. And she did sing "Rain and Snow." For the Saturday evening concert I led "Bound Away," a Liverpool outward bound song by old sailor-poet Bill Adams which is a tribute to "Liverpool Packet." And I couldn't have asked for better company for bunkmates; they never made it to bed before 4 am so I actually got some sleep! Cheerily, Charley Noble |

One that has been floating back with a smile was the time I got to spend with Kiran while his Dad practiced with a few members of Moose Turd Pie before the concert. We rambled around the retreat center looking at the alphabet on the CD boxes... But when we talked about the musicians (despite repeated insistant attempts to be identified as Uncle Mick) Kiran of the sparkling eyes was repeatedly clear that big guy with the guitar was "Mick-ey" It still makes me giggle. In any case, I'm very sensitive to the issue of "bad pictures" of people being shared with a lot of others, especially on line. (Of course, it's hard to tell what someone else considers a good or bad picture of themselves.) But I've tried, especially when making screen caps, to eliminate the really bad pics (people looking cross-eyed, picking their noses instead of their banjos, or just plain having a funny-looking facial expression. I've made some screen caps today and I should be able to get some pics posted next week. For the bulk of the next 2 1/2 days I plan to be working to elect Barack Obama and Joe Biden as well as a bunch of Senatorial and House candidates. Genie |

You might want to not post pictures of us engaging in activities that would get us into trouble with the retreat center, such as consumption of alcoholic beverages (not that I'm saying we did that, but it's kind of awkward for the Getaway chairpeople to be explaining to the retreat center administration that some of us like to goof around by drinking coffee out of Jack Daniels bottles). We like the place, and want to be able to continue to book it in the future! Posting of videos, on the other hand, really needs to be cleared with each and every individual appearing in any segment to be posted. There are issues of copyrighted material, and there are also issues of performance. For instance, I for one don't think my performance of my song on Sunday night was very good, and that's NOT a version of it I want in circulation. --Charlie Baum |

I can send the video clips to people's iPhones or post them on YouTube, but I'm still hoping to find a way to burn them to DVD and then send those to Dick. I also just figured out how to "export" the video project to my Movie folder in any of several formats (as opposed to "saving" the project or burning it directly to DVD). I think once it's been "exported" as a QuickTime movie (or other format), I can then burn it to DVD. The problem re names is I'd like to add the name of the person or persons in the video to the file BEFORE I burn it to DVD. I'm not sure I can change it later (after I delete the original 'event' -- which I need to do to open up space on my hard drive). But if you or Dick or someone like that has an iPhone, I can send my video projects to you before burning them. Then after I've identified the perpetr... er, performers, I can add the credits and then burn the video to DVD. G |

Barry walks in and joins in the chorus. Big Mick sings in the wee hours *I lost most of the videos I did of the concert Sunday night and most of the Doo Wop workshop in the Peace cabin. Most of what survived both my newbie ineptitude with iMovie and the later death of my hard drive is from Bobert's Blues Band, late nights in the Peace Cabin, and 10 to 12 performances from the Sunday night concert. A few things survived only in "thumbnail" form, which allowed for good audio files but made for only iPhone-size videos. Also there are a few video clips that I won't post publicly unless or until I check with the parties involved, for one reason or another. The ones I'm posting here seem pretty "safe." E.g., the songs are PD (at any rate not worried about violating copyright) and the performances look and sound good, etc.) Still, if anyone objects to something being shared, just let me know. |

I had gone to the trouble of saving several of these and playing them with VLC-(videolan player but after posting, I discovered that one can just paste in a YouTube address and play it without technically 'saving' it. VLC will play 'most' streaming media, as well as almost ANY audio or video files...(and they keep up with the latest codecs, too!) Kendall...the guitar sounds better this way, but there are limitations in the recording device. At least Jacqui's singing is clear.) |

When the sound is amplified and then picked up by the laptop's internal mic from a distance of 10-15 feet, there can be distortion that isn't there when the laptop's just recording an acoustic performance from 5 to 10 feet away. Then there's the issue of which format I use for saving the audio/video file. I can experiment with that some more. In the clip of the song I did at the concert, I could hardly hear my guitar at all. |

17 Aug 09 - 02:50 PM (#2702390) Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pictures & videos From: Genie I lost most of the videos I took of the Sunday night concert, so I don't have a lot of examples, but I do think a lot of the problem with the guitar sound on your clip, Kendall, had to do with the way the acoustic guitars were miked. The guitar I used (thanks so much, Nancy!) was acoustic and Charlie had to keep adjusting the mic position while I was singing and playing, and it still came across weak and tinny (not typical of Martins) in the video of my song. But when I videod unamplified instruments in the cabin or louder instruments in the concert, the instruments came over better. Everyone's voice was well amplified in the concert, and the voices tended to come over louder than a lot of instruments, including your guitar. Check out this clip of Mick, voice and guitar unapmplied, in the Peace Cabin. All the videos I did were done with the same recording equipment, which was just the built-in camera and mic on my MacBook. Differences in sound quality result from things like how close the mic is to the sound source, whether and how the sound source was amplified, and the acoustics of the room itself. There are tools that will let you tweak sound after you've recorded it, but I don't have anything like that except for a playback volume control and a "normalizing" function (that basically evens out the volume highs and lows). I can't adjust things like bass and treble or add reverb, etc., at least not with iMovie. (One of these days I'll experiment with my Garage Band to see what its gizmos can do.) |

If you delete the prefspane it forgets you already used it for fourteen days and starts over; but it is wworth buying for editing sound. Garage Band also has many filters but it is harder to use them, being a very different tool. You did very well indeed!! That cut of "See That My Grave is Kept Clean" really shows how delicate LEJ can be with that mouth harp, and how pure-dee roadhouse Bobert can get when he lets loose!! I seldom have the luxury of doing a really thorough input/output sound check when I'm performing or recording someone else, so it'd be really nice to be able to "fix" things like distortion or too much bass after the fact. But to show you how well the li'l ol' MacBook can pick up that harp, the geetars, the dobro, and the vocals without all that tweaking, check out this one more clip from Bobert's Blues Band (clip 4) 2008. But I've often found that even when the sound was great live - guitar and vocals evenly balanced, frequencies adjusted right, volume just right for the room, the recording device (be it my MacBook or someone's video camera or a tape recorder) didn't capture the same sound. That can have a lot to do with things like direct-ins, mic placement in relation to the recording device, etc. For example, in this clip of (mainly) Big Mick singing "Caledonia" , the input device (MacBook) was too close to me and some others in the room and too far away from Mick. So his voice comes over strong, but the guitar doesn't, and some of us singing or whistling along were picked up too well. Same thing happened in the Getaway concert when the audience was singing along. The voices of people sitting near the laptop mic were picked up louder than ideally, relative to the on-stage performer's voice/instrument. Of course, it helps to have separate tracks recorded for the various voices and instruments, but sometimes the convenience of a portable, all-in-one recording system trumps most other considerations. :) |

I think I could rig up rig up one of the mics I already have to use for direct input. I'd just have to use the right kind of adapters. Sometimes having a mic cord lying across the floor and propped up near the performer can pose logistical problems that don't exist when you just have a dig. camera or laptop sitting a few feet or yards away. But I'll look into that mic you suggested. |

The built in pair of stereo mics on the Edirol are very good, and being digital you can boost the levels and make adjustments before adding to the pictures, it also has the benefit ,of course of allowing amost continuous recording of the "interesting" sound track!!even when you are not videoing. |

(If I hadn't lost my hard drive there'd have been a bunch more, since I recorded the whole Sunday night concert and some more of the spontaneous music in the Peace Cabin.) ---------------- Interesting suggestions, Micca. (Though I find it's time-consuming enough to deal with the videos without having to sync a separate sound track to the images.) Thing is, I've been pretty happy with the sound quality on most of the videos from the Getaway. The miked acoustic instruments in the concert, such as Kendall's guitar, my guitar, and ClaireBear's dulcimer on her "Buffalo" song, are exceptions. And I have nearly always found that miking an acoustic guitar satisfactorily is difficult in a live performance. It's hard to get it miked loudly enough without risking feedback if I move an inch or two while playing. Oh, and, Amos, you know that last BBB-4 clip, with all the flouncing floozettes, wasn't in the wee hours of the AM. That was Sunday afternoon at about 4PM, if I recall correctly. To be one's huckleberry — usually as the phrase I'm your huckleberry — is to be just the right person for a given job, or a willing executor of some commission. Where it comes from needs a bit more explaining. First a bit of botanical history. When European settlers arrived in the New World, they found several plants that provided small, dark-coloured sweet berries. They reminded them of the English bilberry and similar fruits and they gave them one of the dialect terms they knew for them, hurtleberry, whose origin is unknown (though some say it has something to do with hurt, from the bruised colour of the berries; a related British dialect form is whortleberry). Very early on — at the latest 1670 — this was corrupted to huckleberry. As huckleberries are small, dark and rather insignificant, in the early part of the nineteenth century the word became a synonym for something humble or minor, or a tiny amount. An example from 1832: "He was within a huckleberry of being smothered to death". Later on it came to mean somebody inconsequential. Mark Twain borrowed some aspects of these ideas to name his famous character, Huckleberry Finn. His idea, as he told an interviewer in 1895, was to establish that he was a boy "of lower extraction or degree" than Tom Sawyer. Also around the 1830s, we see the same idea of something small being elaborated and bombasted in the way so typical of the period to make the comparison a huckleberry to a persimmon, the persimmon being so much larger that it immediately establishes the image of something tiny against something substantial. There's also a huckleberry over one's persimmon, something just a little bit beyond one's reach or abilities; an example is in David Crockett: His Life and Adventures by John S C Abbott, of 1874: "This was a hard business on me, for I could just barely write my own name. But to do this, and write the warrants too, was at least a huckleberry over my persimmon". Quite how I'm your huckleberry came out of all that with the sense of the man for the job isn't obvious. It seems that the word came to be given as a mark of affection or comradeship to one's partner or sidekick. There is often an identification of oneself as a willing helper or assistant about it, as here in True to Himself, by Edward Stratemeyer, dated 1900: " 'I will pay you for whatever you do for me.' 'Then I'm your huckleberry. Who are you and what do you want to know?' ". Despite the obvious associations, it doesn't seem to derive directly from Mark Twain's books." If you type "FSGW" in the YouTube search box, you should see a list of all of them. For reasons I don't understand (YouTube's "search" function leaves a lot to be desired), there are other a few videos that also come up (one, apparently, some sort of lesbian sex video, judging by the thumbnail) that have nothing to do with FSGW. But if you look through the pages that come up (about 30 videos in all) you should find all the ones I posted from the 2008 Getaway. There are a few other videos from earlier FSGW happenings that will also come up, which is cool. |

You can find all the ones I put on YouTube (plus a few more) by just doing a search for "FSGW" there. If you type in "FSGW Getaway" you'll eliminate most if not all the seemingly non-related videos, but you may also eliminate a couple FSGW videos that are not from the Getaway. |
