Why the move?

The pub shut!

It is possibly a temporary measure, however, they say 4 pubs a day are shutting in England this year.
We have not managed to contact the landlord yet to find out the reason, its all locked up.

On the up side, there are many "Real Ales" at the Fernandez Brewery Tap and a nice atmosphere to boot.

Thanks for the advert Sarah.

Barnsley has got some very good singers and musicians Ray for one. He is a regular contributor at Wakefield Folk Club and proved on the 5th that he is getting his voice back.

Dennis the Elder,

is this a open session or the more formal folk club style? can't do with being shushed whilst being bored stupid with Matty Groves LOL

Subject: RE: Wakefield Folk Club , Change of Venue
From: tedizz

If I could answer your question fully Squeezeboxkc, we like to think that it is neither a singaround nor a session, everyone is welcome and if they feel a song or a tune coming on, just dive in - don't wait to be asked! It has been like that since way back in 0'Donoghue's days and it seems to work

17 Oct 08 - 06:27 AM (#2468091)
Subject: RE: Wakefield Folk Club , Change of Venue
From: Dennis the Elder

Just to add, the music is a mix of singing and tunes with squeeze boxes, whistles, guitars etc. It is not structured or formal and has no M.C., there is no need as people generally offer hospitality and reasonable order for singers or tunes.

It is still a local's pub, however, and silence cannot be expected or guaranteed. It is usually a pleasant afternoon with friendly people and a mixure of music and styles. All are welcome.

I think it is true to say that contrary to many gatherings musicians and singers get along very well and respect is given to singers old and new as well as old and new musicians

there are some brill musicians who don't sing and some musicians who sing and play ~ behave and Dave Nuttall won't sit on yer!

Interpret Old and and New as you will!!

Just in case there has been any misunderstanding, Dave has pointed out that there is also a "Wakefield Folk Club" which still operates at the Black Horse, Westgate Wakefield.

The changes involving Fernandes should not be confused with this club.

The club held at the Black Horse appears in "Tykes News" as "Session and Song Folk Club at The Black Horse, Wakefield", is every Wednesday evening and is run by Tony and Mel.

Apologies to Tony and Mel if there has been any confusion.

Thanks to all who attended in November. It was a very good session, pehaps one of the best, with many singers, musicians and listeners.

Next session Sunday 6th December at Fernands Brewery Tap.

Again all are welcome, singers, musicians and listeners.

Unfortunatly for me (pehaps not for those listening) I cannot attend and my rendition of the Jail of Cluain Meala will not be heard.
If last months session is a taste of what is to come then I certainly won't be missed.

All this e mail stuff is new to me....so be patient . I STARTED this message in 2007 so I should be close now. FERNANDES FOLK still meets on the first SUNDAY of each month from 2 p m to 6 . Please see these pages for moe details. Last month many singers and musicians were at WHITBY for Moor And Coast Fest but Grog and Dave went along . The sessions and songs still receive excellent support....and the real ale selection is second to none....unless you are on a no beer diet like me.The next date for the folk afternoon is Sunday 7 th, June and everyone is most welcome . I believe this is the same date as Robin Hoods Bay and Wiirral festivals . Ben May has run Ackworth Folk Club at the Masons Arms for many years. Ackworth is on the 3rd Sunday of each month at 2 p.m Numbers are a bit sparse at the moment and it would be great to support this club with new and old faces.   Next meeting is 21 st JUNE .         REGARDS       DAVE NUTTALL

It was good to see so many people at the session yesterday . I am almost afraid to refer to it as a SESSION because that seems to be more associated with musicians rather than the mix of voices and instruments which both feature at Fernandes and such is its appeal ! I am sure we have all been to folk venues where there is sometimes conflict between voices and instruments but this has never been the case here...thank goodness ! Long may that continue . Our next scheduled meeting on 5th. July coincides with Cleckheaton Festival so numbers may well be depleted .However, I know some folk will still manage to get there ! Brian and I are hosting the singaround at Cleckheaton on Saturday 5th in the WHICKHAMS pub from 12 to 4 . Tom McDonald then continues to 6 p.m so please come along and join us at this excellent festival . Contrary to reports this month in some folk magazines , the BLACK HORSE in Whitby is NOT under new management and music in this excellent venue is still safe with the present inumbent sue... great atmosphere, music and real ale ! There is now another new landlord at Fernandes Tap pub at the bottom of Kirkgate in WAKEFIELD.His name is Nigel and he is very keen and willing to promote and support live music of all kinds to include Folk Music. The next session for musicians and singers is very informal and will take place from 2 p,m. to 6 p.m on Sunday 2nd.August.These sessions are free and meet on the first Sunday of each month but please check as some sessions clash with Summer Festivals from time to time .I will be on holiday on the 2nd. Aug but hope there is a good attendance as Nigel is kindly providing some food during the afternoon. Please do your best to go along to play, sing or listen and support the landlord of this excellent real ale pub.    BEST WISHES    DAVID NUTTALL

Sorry to report that the session did not happen today. That was such a shame after the June one had been so good, and even more frustrating because it was a wasted 60+-mile round-trip for me.
I got there just after 1340, and stayed until nearly 1430. By that time nobody else had turned up. There were 3 or 4 locals drinking in the upstairs bar, and the chap behind the bar suggested that "it's probably not happening, and the folks have probably gone over to the Grey Horse instead". As I was getting back in the car to leave, a lass who appeared to be something to do with the pub came out of the fire exit and I had a chat with her. She helpfully told me she had checked earlier in the week and been told that today's session was still due to have been on and nobody had since indicated otherwise, but she thought it was due to start at 4 pm not 2 pm. Naturally, I didn't really relish the idea of hanging about for another hour or so just in case...
Most disappointing, and let's hope things can get sorted in time for future months - or has the session moved to another venue at short notice maybe? (Oh, I'm not sure whether I'll be around for the September one if it happens)

Dave Nuttall was unable to attend due to some serious problems in the family

Next time you come please, please either check out with me or other regulars before coming

The session was great with usual mixture of songs and music

Well ain't that strange Ray!
But surely no-one should have to wait around for nearly an hour for any folks to turn up at all let alone things to get started?
As for checking, well I did - I'd emailed Dave Nuttall a couple of days earlier specially to check but was unaware of his family problems, didn't think I'd need to check with anyone else.
The weirdest thing was what the pub staff were telling me - so was that a load of cobblers or wot? Who else d'you believe if there's no-one else around?
Late starting's not such a problem if everyone's in the know - but (a) late starts tend to creep into later still, it's a vicious circle, and (b) not everyone is conveniently "just around the corner".
Sorry if that sounds grumpy, but I'm just p***** off at having planned and then wasted a whole Sunday afternoon (now wouldn't you be?).

Ok Dave

Dave Nuttall isn't all that good at IT ~ I'm afraid; evidence above! and has a lot to think about at the moment

Brian (dark bearded guy thick set and suit was in) and I concluded from what he reported had happened that it must have been you who was somewhat upset

The pub has changed hands again and I checked before I set off bearing in mind the festival season to see who might turn in (July was out due to Cleckie)

All I can say is we retired guys take things a bit more laid back and have the time to do so, there being nothing at stake so to speak!

So I am sorry that the open pub session was somewhat late to start, we did enjoy what we did though, although it can be a bit noisy

Take care

sorry about any inconvenience surrounding last Fernandes session. I was unable to attend but liaised with the landlord about timings and food etc and it seems that the only thing which marred it somewhat was a later start than usual,We aim to start by 2 but iits a bit easier to sing or play whhen there are few in at the start. I am told that the session was ultimately very good as was the food. its a shame that Dave K apparently had a wasted journey.I indicated on my last message that I could not attend....experienced a very sad and traunatic family sequence of events and I would like to thank so many friends for their kindness and support at such a difficult time; Next Fernandes is sunday 6TH sept....aiming fof a 2 p.m kick off.   WARM REGARDS.    DAVE NUTTALL

The next mixed session at Fernandes will take place on SUNDAY 6TH SEPT....aiming for a 2 p.m start. Those who are as old as me may well remember David and Gladys Sheard who were landlord and lady of the very famous Moodies Bar in Bread Street , Wakefield. The spit and sawdust pub , formerly men only, was the venue in the sixties and seventies for much folk music and was a very special and unique place. It was visited by lawyers, ladies of the night , rogues , solicitors and students from Bretton Hall Teacher Training College...of which I was one . Friday nights saw an eclectic mix of muicians and singers and the pub rarely closed until the very late EARLY hours. The pub gave its name to the early vinyl records made by Mike Levon and friends on the HOLY GROUND label. This series is still available ...now on C D from Trad Music in Wakefield opposite Fernandes. Gladys is now 94 and still lively with a love of music. I plan to pick her up and take her to the next Fernandes session on the 6 th. It would be lovely if her old friends could meet up with her on that day and come over to say hello and renew old friendships.Sadly ,Dave died some years ago but his patronage of live folk music lives on . As Dave has put it roughly

O'Donoghues in Wakefield, this is the third Sunday in the month (this one Feb 21st) and a small venue ideal for folkies

Tis rumoured that there may be an odd bite to eat too and it will be mainly folkies coming

Its this Sunday from around 2pm (as for Fernandes Tap)

I visited Wakefield Folk Club on Sunday after a long absence and was extremely pleased to find it was even better than it was I was last there. What a great turn out, a great variation of artists, from great unaccompanied singers to magnificent instrumentalists and many accomplished singers who also played a good range of instruments.
I certainly will be visiting Fernandes Tap and also it's sister Club.

Yes many of Wakefield's finest fiddlers, melodeons, concertinas, banjoes, and singers even an odd visit from Tom McConville on Sunday just gone

This is in my book a Mixed session catering musicians solo and with others and some accompanied and unaccompanied ~ first Sunday in month Fernades Tap, third Bull and Fairhouse from 1pm til about 6pm in Wakefield, audience most welcome too

Folk is and has been factionalised and good music and song is not just the province of paid professionals in concert

I would like to echo the last 2 posts here by Dennis and Ray.Thanks to all who attended ! This mixed informal session for singers and musicians at Fernandes Tap on Sunday 2nd .November was ,indeed , very very special.

Around 35 singers and musicians regularly meet together to provide an afternoon of music- making which is second to none with a variety of instruments and singing styles both accompanied and unaccompanied.

This is NOT a 'singaround ' or ' tune around ' as it is simply a blend of music which needs the minimum of organisation and with no inflated egos in sight !! The sessions simply HAPPEN due to the respect each holds for others and their contributions. We welcome newcomers and audience members too and we are always anxious to welcome younger participants.

The sessions at Fernandes are held at around 1 pm on the first Sunday of each month while a similar session takes place on the third Sunday of each month at the same time but at the Bull And Fairhouse in Wakefield.

Why not come along and see for yourself.... all are very welcome. Please see my mobile number on previous posts if you need more information. We look forward to seeing you.

Best Wishes . DAVID
